Benzene And Toluene Mixing Ratios In Indoor Air Of Homes With Attached Garages And Measurement Of Respective Biomarkers Of Exposure And Ventilation Effects, Maggie Ann Isbell Apr 2000

Benzene And Toluene Mixing Ratios In Indoor Air Of Homes With Attached Garages And Measurement Of Respective Biomarkers Of Exposure And Ventilation Effects, Maggie Ann Isbell

Theses (Unassigned)

Benzene and toluene mixing ratios were measured in the indoor air of homes with attached garages for several seasons using a thermal desorption GC-FID sampling and analysis protocol (EPA T0-17). Benzene in the living area of these homes ranged from 1--72 ppbv and toluene ranged 3--111 ppbv. The garage levels of benzene ranged from 8--304 pbbv and the toluene levels ranged from 14--591 ppbv. Numerous experiments and a model support the hypothesis of a single source of toluene and benzene. Source strength estimate calculations supported the hypothesis that gasoline in the attached garage is the primary source of these compounds …

Dividing Alaska, 1867-2000: Changing Land Ownership And Management, Teresa Hull, Linda Leask Apr 2000

Dividing Alaska, 1867-2000: Changing Land Ownership And Management, Teresa Hull, Linda Leask

ISER Reports

When the U.S. bought Alaska in 1867, it acquired an area twice the size of the 13 original American colonies and three quarters as big as the Louisiana Purchase. This paper looks broadly at changing land ownership and management in Alaska from 1867 through today. For almost a century, the federal government gave up only a sliver of Alaska’s 375 million acres, mostly through homesteading and other land programs. But when Alaska became a state in 1959, Congress gave the new state rights to about 104 million acres. Then, in 1971, Congress settled Alaska Native land claims with a land …

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer Apr 2000

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird-aircraft strike databases have been used to identify, monitor, and manage bird strike problems in the USA nationally and at individual airports. Up to 75% of all bird strikes that occur in the USA may not be reported by pilots or airport control tower personnel. Recent studies have suggested that individual airports may improve their strike reporting rates by having personnel regularly search runways for the remains of birds struck by aircraft. We analyzed a 20-year dataset of runway searches from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York to determine the degree of bias in reports of strikes …

Changing Markets For Alaska Roe Herring, Terry Johnson, Gunnar Knapp Apr 2000

Changing Markets For Alaska Roe Herring, Terry Johnson, Gunnar Knapp

ISER Reports

The Pacific herring fishery is one of Alaska’s most important commercial fisheries, with average annual landings during the 1990s of 47,100 tons, an average ex-vessel value of $28.9 million, and an average first wholesale value of $80.1 million. Although total landings have been relatively stable, ex-vessel prices and ex-vessel value are highly variable, and declined during the 1990s. This paper examines factors affecting the prices paid for Alaska herring.

Ecology, Economics, Politics, And The Alaska Forest Industry, Gunnar Knapp Apr 2000

Ecology, Economics, Politics, And The Alaska Forest Industry, Gunnar Knapp

ISER Reports

Ecology, economics, and politics together define and constrain opportunities for the Alaska forest products industry. Ecology limits potential timber harvest paths and non-timber benefits over time. One kind of ecological limit is the tradeoff between potential harvest levels over time. Another kind of ecological limit is the tradeoff between timber harvests and non-timber forest benefits such as fish and wildlife and scenery. The tradeoffs we make between ecologically possible levels of timber harvests over time and ecologically possible combinations of timber and non-timber benefits are political decisions. Ecology sets broad limits to possible Alaska timber harvest paths over time. But …

Evaluation Of The Alaska Native Health Board Sanitation Facility Operation And Maintenance Program: Phase Ii, Sharman Haley

ISER Reports

The Alaska Native Health Board is administering a demonstration grant program intended to improve the capacity of rural Alaska communities to operate and maintain their water and sewer systems. This multi-year program began in 1996 and is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Wastewater Management. The Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Alaska Anchorage is evaluating the individual projects and the program overall. This report is the final evaluation of the 16 Phase II community projects for which data collection was substantially complete as of September 30, 1999. Phase II started in 1997. …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a gender bias-free environment for students at the Westampton Township Middle School utilizing an action research survey model in order to establish a staff and student equity awareness baseline. Using this baseline, resources will be identified and committed to programs and activities to address and reduce levels of identified gender bias.

To establish the baseline, surveys were developed. One survey was developed for staff and another for students. Thirty-nine of forty-two teachers participated in the staff survey. Three hundred out of three hundred and six 6th, 7th and 8th grade students participated …
