Paper Session Ii-B - Checkout & Launch Control System, Jim Leondike, Ken Clark May 2000

Paper Session Ii-B - Checkout & Launch Control System, Jim Leondike, Ken Clark

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Checkout and Launch Control System (CLCS) is a NASA-led effort to design, develop, and implement a new Launch Processing System (LPS) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This re-engineering of hardware and software will support processing the Space Shuttle and future launch vehicles in the Launch Control Center (LCC), Hypergolic Maintenance Facility (HMF), Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF), Shuttle Avionics Integration Lab (SAIL) at Johnson Space Center (JSC), Dryden, and the Main Engine Processing Facility (SSMEPF).

CLCS is a distributed system utilizing state of the art technology in both hardware and software development. CLCS consists of four major systems: Simulation …

Paper Session Ii-C - Advancements In Chemical-Gas Species-Specific Point-Sensors, Christopher Immer Ph.D., Gregory Hall, Anthony Eckhoff

Space Congress® Proceedings

Gaseous Chemical detection at trace levels is important to the space industry both for the safety of ground support equipment and space faring vessels. Gaseous point sensors are mature enough that inexpensive, small, and robust devices perform comparably to their bulkier, intricately complex, high-maintenance mass spectrometer counterparts. In particular, we will present an overview of technology for hydrogen and oxygen point sensors and display data for sensors of current technologies that represent today’s state of the art point sensors. In the light of this technology, new developments and direction for the future of point sensor devices will be discussed. Hydrogen …

Paper Session Ii-A - Predictive Health & Reliability Management (Pharm), William C. Atkinson May 2000

Paper Session Ii-A - Predictive Health & Reliability Management (Pharm), William C. Atkinson

Space Congress® Proceedings

PHARM was developed to address operational costs associated with Space Shuttle component failures, repair, and/or replacement processes by identifying components trending toward failure. Thus PHARM mitigates impacts to operational testing and mission performances by providing realistic need dates and historical performance data for component repair/replacement decisions and logistic provisioning. BRSS developed under an IR&D and NASA contract an OMS Vehicle Health Management testbed using qualification hardware in flight configuration. The testbed performs a complete and total automated checkout of an OMS Helium pressurization system. In the course of the automated checkout, key component performance data is saved, correlated and used …

Paper Session Ii-B - A Historical And Current Status Of Processing The Space Shuttle: A Metrics Based Assessment, Grant Cates May 2000

Paper Session Ii-B - A Historical And Current Status Of Processing The Space Shuttle: A Metrics Based Assessment, Grant Cates

Space Congress® Proceedings

After nearly twenty-years of operation and 100 flights, the space shuttle has amassed a wealth of historical processing data. The data is currently being used to generate various “metrics”—graphs, figures, charts, etc.—used to track continual improvement of the shuttle. This paper displays and discusses several key space shuttle metrics including: (1) the annual flight rate—planned and actual; (2) time required to process the various flight hardware elements through their respective processing facilities; (3) ground processing hours required to produce space shuttle missions; (4) the size of the ground processing workforce; (5) stress on the workforce as measured by overtime and …

Paper Session Ii-C - Low Cost Self-Calibrating, Field Serviceable Signal Conditioning Amplifier, Pedro J. Medelius May 2000

Paper Session Ii-C - Low Cost Self-Calibrating, Field Serviceable Signal Conditioning Amplifier, Pedro J. Medelius

Space Congress® Proceedings

Multiple sensors are used to conduct measurements during every Space Shuttle flow. Often, these measurements have to be installed at locations where available space is minimal. Signal conditioners have a frequent need to be removed from service for calibration, typically, on an annual basis. The calibration must be performed in a shop with traceable test equipment, and can require several hours of manpower.

A low cost miniaturized Signal Conditioning Amplifier (SCA), based on the use of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) and IEEE 1451-compliant, will reduce the manpower required to set up new measurements and to replace or calibrate existing ones. …

Paper Session Ii-C - A Nasa Predictive Safety Model, Michael Camet, Rolando Quintana May 2000

Paper Session Ii-C - A Nasa Predictive Safety Model, Michael Camet, Rolando Quintana

Space Congress® Proceedings

A proactive methodology for accident prevention, called Continuous Hazard Tracking and Failure Prediction Methodology (CHTFPM), has been developed by utilizing the principles of work sampling and control charting. Sampling is performed to observe the occurrence of conditions that may become hazardous in a given system. These conditions, known as dendritics, could eventually result in an accident or occupational disease. The CHTFPM involves a random sampling for the occurrence of these dendritics. The collected data is then used to generate a control chart. Based on the pattern of the control chart, a system “under control” is not disturbed whereas a system …
