IIMB Management Review

Readers who pick up any book on knowledge management, intellectual capital or the learning organisation, approach it with a single objective: what does it mean and how do I implement it? The success or otherwise of any such book, therefore, will to a large extent depend on how well it answers these questions. Huseman and Goodman have done a singularly comprehensive job of answering these questions with conceptual clarity and practical implementability.

Organisational Development Revisited, Vijay Padaki Jun 2000

Organisational Development Revisited, Vijay Padaki

IIMB Management Review

The liberalisation in the Indian economic environment in the 90s has been accompanied by a quiet but firm demand for better management in all spheres of work. The liberalisation process has also opened up the marketplace for all kinds of goods and services, not excluding packaged management systems. We can expect a lot of management being marketed in the new dispensation more suppliers, more products, more brands, more aggressive selling and, lest we forget, more dumping. The consumer needs help in the supermarket to make informed choices. In the management bazaar, too, the consumer could do with some guidance.

Managing From The Heart: Unfolding Spirit In People And Organizations: By Arun Wakhlu, New Delhi: Response Books, 1999., C Manohar Reddy Jun 2000

Managing From The Heart: Unfolding Spirit In People And Organizations: By Arun Wakhlu, New Delhi: Response Books, 1999., C Manohar Reddy

IIMB Management Review

For long, books on management have focused primarily on knowledge, skills and performance and have not shown much concern for the soul or the well-being of the people and society at large. Most HRD professionals and management trainers, caught in the paradigm of scienticism, have shied away from addressing the issues of the soul and the spirit in spite of the silent cry of many managers and other members of organisations seeking ways of integrating the spirit with work.

What Is To Be Done, Kate Millett Jun 2000

What Is To Be Done, Kate Millett

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Since its existence, the feminist movement has fought for equal rights for women, and, in so doing, it has challenged the oldest and most fundamental social scheme in history-patriarchy. Patriarchy is the rule of males over females in all departments of human life, and it is based on custom, belief, law, and ultimately on force. Although the American feminist movement made significant progress in its early years, it has struggled in recent years to accomplish many of its goals. Millett notes that the American feminist movement now stands stalemated, on the defensive, and trying desperately to hold on to the …

Reasking The Woman Question At Divorce, Penelope E. Bryan Jun 2000

Reasking The Woman Question At Divorce, Penelope E. Bryan

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Bryan first explores the disconnect between the feminist goal of equality for women and women's experience at divorce. Divorce continues to devastate women's economic prospects, frequently deprives them of their children, and sometimes compromises their physical safety. Many feminists have proposed changes to existing law and procedure that offer to protect women's interests in their children, in marital assets, and in their physical safety. Yet theoretical and strategical rifts between feminists continue to compromise their political ability to promote women's interests in divorce. Bryan urges feminists to abandon these differences and return to the basic "woman question" by supporting legal …

Biology For Feminists, Katharine K. Baker Jun 2000

Biology For Feminists, Katharine K. Baker

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Feminists and sociobiologists have more in common than many people realize. In this Essay, Baker argues that feminists can use insights from sociobiology to validate feminist theories about patriarchy and to bolster claims for a greater legal commitment to feminist normative agendas. Paying particular attention to the laws regarding rape, marriage, and parenthood, Baker shows how biology helps confirm what feminists have long argued about the law's inadequate protection of women. Moreover, she shows how biology helps demonstrate the keen need for feminist social norms that help alleviate the harms caused by nature's inequities.

The Effects Of Role-Taking And Embarrassability On Undergraduate Drinking: Some Unanticipated Findings, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak Jun 2000

The Effects Of Role-Taking And Embarrassability On Undergraduate Drinking: Some Unanticipated Findings, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This paper focuses on the relationship between role-taking, affect, and alcohol use among college undergraduates. Role-taking is the process through which people anticipate the perspectives—expectations, evaluations, and behaviors—of others (Mead, 1934). Reflexive role-taking (i.e.,viewing oneself through the eyes of others) was significantly related to four distinct types of embarrassment. However, in opposition to our hypotheses, embarrassment resulting from becoming the center of others’ attentions was the only form of embarrassability significantly related to undergraduate drinking. Moreover, it was those students least susceptible to this type of embarrassment who were the most likely to be drinkers. While role-taking, in general, was …

An Interpretation Of The Significance Of Human Remains From The Caves Of The Southern Maya Lowlands, Sheryl A. Gibbs

KIP Theses and Dissertations

Caves in the Maya area have long been known to contain human remains. Unfortunately, very little has been offered in the way of interpretation. This analysis is aimed at shedding light on the questions surrounding the occurrence of human remains in caves of the Southern Maya lowlands.

Extending The Progress Of The Feminist Movement To Encompass The Rights Of Migrant Farmworker Women, Richard Kamm Jun 2000

Extending The Progress Of The Feminist Movement To Encompass The Rights Of Migrant Farmworker Women, Richard Kamm

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Migrant farmworker women are among the poorest of the working poor. Historically marginalized and disenfranchised by feminists and the legal community, as well as by male farmworker activists, migrant farmworker women continue to be plagued by problems of employment discrimination, workplace sexual harassment, and domestic violence. While some feminist legal scholars have argued that the solution to such problems is to make the feminist movement more inclusive and to move away from taking the experiences of white middle-class women as representative of the experiences of all women, Kamm argues that a better alternative would be to provide migrant farmworker women …

Constructing Families In A Democracy: Courts, Legislatures And Second-Parent Adoption, Jane S. Schacter Jun 2000

Constructing Families In A Democracy: Courts, Legislatures And Second-Parent Adoption, Jane S. Schacter

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Essay, Schacter examines recent judicial decisions on so-called "second parent adoption," in which one partner in a gay or lesbian relationship seeks to adopt the other partner's child without terminating that partner's legal relationship with the child. With the recent boom of lesbian families in particular, the availability of such adoptions has been litigated in several states. Although the results have been uneven, this has been an area of significant progress for same-sex families, with courts in at least twenty-one states having authorized such adoptions. The appellate rulings in this area have been decisions involving statutory interpretation and …

Bump, Set, Spiked: Determining Whether The National Collegiate Athletic Association Is A Recipient Of Federal Funds Under Title Ix, Matthew P. Hamner

Missouri Law Review

Since the enactment of the Education Amendments of 1972, a major issue facing the National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA") and its member schools has been the applicability of Title IX of the Amendments to those organizations. Title IX provides that no organization that operates educational programs may discriminate on the basis of sex if that program receives federal financial assistance Like many other federal antidiscrimination acts, the main debate under Title IX involves when a particular organization can be deemed to be "receiving" federal financial assistance. While the majority of NCAA member schools receive federal funds, the NCAA as an …

Private Concerns Of Private Plaintiffs: Revisiting A Problematic Defamation Category, Nat Stern Jun 2000

Private Concerns Of Private Plaintiffs: Revisiting A Problematic Defamation Category, Nat Stern

Missouri Law Review

Part I of the Article traces the route to the Court's decision to add the public/private concern inquiry to the complex4 body of defamation doctrine, as well as the potential impact of this distinction beyond the context in which it was first promulgated. Part II reviews courts' efforts to categorize defamatory speech in a rational way, seeking to demonstrate that this goal has inevitably eluded them. From a broader perspective, Part III examines the Court's longstanding ambivalence toward elevating speech of a presumably public nature over other expression. Against this backdrop, the Court's decision to distinguish between public and private …

Missouri's Workers' Compensation Law: Expanding The Definitions Of Medical Treatment And Medical Necessity, Jean M. Guignon Jun 2000

Missouri's Workers' Compensation Law: Expanding The Definitions Of Medical Treatment And Medical Necessity, Jean M. Guignon

Missouri Law Review

The purpose of workers' compensation law is to relieve society from the burden of providing support to workers injured on the job by shifting the burden onto the employer. With advances in medical technology, Missouri courts have struggled to define "medical treatment' and "medical necessity" for the purpose of compensating injured workers. The Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District of Missouri in Mickey v. City Wide Maintenance addressed the situation when a worker could recover for a service not explicitly covered under the definition of "medical treatment." The court found that a specially equipped van was "medical treatment" …

Angiotensin Ii Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions And Aneurysms In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Alan Daugherty, Michael W. Manning, Lisa A. Cassis Jun 2000

Angiotensin Ii Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions And Aneurysms In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Alan Daugherty, Michael W. Manning, Lisa A. Cassis

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Increased plasma concentrations of angiotension II (Ang II) have been implicated in atherogenesis. To examine this relationship directly, we infused Ang II or vehicle for 1 month via osmotic minipumps into mature apoE–/– mice. These doses of Ang II did not alter arterial blood pressure, body weight, serum cholesterol concentrations, or distribution of lipoprotein cholesterol. However, Ang II infusions promoted an increased severity of aortic atherosclerotic lesions. These Ang II–induced lesions were predominantly lipid-laden macrophages and lymphocytes; moreover, Ang II promoted a marked increase in the number of macrophages present in the adventitial tissue underlying lesions. Unexpectedly, pronounced abdominal …

Telemedicine: Rx For The Future Of Health Care, Susan E. Volkert Jun 2000

Telemedicine: Rx For The Future Of Health Care, Susan E. Volkert

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Quite simply, telemedicine symbolizes and catalyzes the clash between the reality of our legal and political approach to health care and the American dream of bringing health care to all patients. Telemedicine, like our health care delivery systems, is regulated by many layers of government. Unlike other issues, telemedicine cuts through and challenges the traditional controls of access and cost. As such, telemedicine is a microcosm of our health care delivery system and a lens through which one may analyze the obstacles to access in the current system. This article examines these issues, proposes that telemedicine's goal should be to …
