Pursuing Transparency Through Science Courts, Thomas G. Field Jr. Jun 2000

Pursuing Transparency Through Science Courts, Thomas G. Field Jr.

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "The frequency and magnitude of risks and benefits are facts. The acceptability of risks associated with particular benefits is not. In the best of all worlds, normative choices based on facts would be made directly by persons at risk. We do not have the best of all worlds. As we move from consumer to occupational and environmental risks, political transparency increasingly must substitute for individual autonomy. When we cannot each have our way, we should be able to decide which facts are important, to have access to such facts and to be able to influence decisions based on them."

Profilin is a key phosphoinositide and actin-binding protein connecting and coordinating changes in signal transduction pathways with alterations in the actin cytoskeleton. Using biochemical assays and microscopic approaches, we demonstrate that profilin-null cells are defective in macropinocytosis, fluid phase efflux, and secretion of lysosomal enzymes but are unexpectedly more efficient in phagocytosis than wild-type cells. Disruption of the lmpA gene encoding a protein (DdLIMP) belonging to the CD36/LIMPII family suppressed, to different degrees, most of the profilin-minus defects, including the increase in F-actin, but did not rescue the secretion defect. Immunofluorescence microscopy indicated that DdLIMP, which is also capable of …

Central America Landmine Survivors: The Need For Action In Nicaragua, William Boyce

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Landmines are indiscriminate weapons, wounding and killing not only soldiers but women and children as well. Although hostilities may cease, landmines continue to maim and kill 500 victims a week, the equivalent of 26,000 additional disabled persons each year. There are at least 250,000 landmine-disabled people in the world, and the number continues to grow.

Policy After Politics: How Should The Next Administration Approach Public Land Management In The Western States?, Andrus Center For Public Policy

Research and Reports

The Policy after Politics conference was convened by the chairman of the Andrus Center, Cecil D. Andrus. The purpose of the conference was to offer advice to the next presidential administration on the following question: “How should the next administration approach public land management in the western states?” The speakers at the conference were a bipartisan group of current and former governors of western states, men known as successful leaders and politicians in their respective states. Each speaker was presented with the above question and asked to tailor his remarks and thoughts around it.

Using Schip To Subsidize Employment-Based Coverage: How Far Can This Strategy Go?, Karl Polzer Jun 2000

Using Schip To Subsidize Employment-Based Coverage: How Far Can This Strategy Go?, Karl Polzer

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper examines and analyzes early efforts by states to subsidize employment-based health insurance under the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which offers states a more generous funding rate than under Medicaid. As the Health Care Financing Administration prepares to issue regulations governing SCHIP, the paper summarizes complaints by state officials that federal rules governing how job-based coverage might be subsidized under the program are overly complex and rigid. After interviewing officials at the federal level and in six states as well as a variety of researchers and policy experts, the author considered whether and to what extent …

The Overseas Refugee Program: Foreign Policy, Public Opinion, And Refugee Policy, Merissa Kandalaft Jun 2000

The Overseas Refugee Program: Foreign Policy, Public Opinion, And Refugee Policy, Merissa Kandalaft

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

This paper first examines the history of American refugee policy and the origins of the Overseas Refugee Program. An overview of the structure of the program follows, with an example of how it was applied to Iraqi refugees after the Gulf War. Then, I will present the key influences affecting the United States refugee policy: humanitarian concerns, domestic concerns including special interest groups and public opinion, and foreign policy. Next I will present a critique of the current politically motivated system. Finally, I propose suggested reforms including the establishment of an independent board to make annual determinations regarding refugee admissions; …

Tibial Plateau Fractures: A New Classification Scheme, Raja Muhammad Shahzad Khan, Shuja Hassan Khan, Agha Jamil Ahmad, Muhammad Umar Jun 2000

Tibial Plateau Fractures: A New Classification Scheme, Raja Muhammad Shahzad Khan, Shuja Hassan Khan, Agha Jamil Ahmad, Muhammad Umar

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Fractures of the tibial plateaus are common injuries. Various classification schemes have been used to describe these injuries. Although each system has its own purpose, the simpler systems do not allow comparison with more complex divisions. The problem is compounded by the variable use of adjectives that describe these fractures. A comprehensive classification of tibial plateau fractures should group fractures that are similar in topography, morphology, and pathogenesis, requiring similar treatment, and having a similar prognosis. Fracture dislocations and standard tibial plateau fractures should be incorporated into a single classification to avoid the use of two complementary classifications. Any such …

Enabling Business - Community Partnerships, Seema Gupta Jun 2000

Enabling Business - Community Partnerships, Seema Gupta

IIMB Management Review

The decade of the 1990s has perhaps seen the most profound changes in global economic structures. The effects of structural adjustment and globalisation and the emergence of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have meant that the role of business has dramatically changed throughout the world. Statistics of the number of corporations that are larger than nation-states abound and only illustrate the importance of the corporate sector and its impact on the world order.
