Degradation In The Brockman River And Ellen Brook Catchments, Western Australia, Brian Lloyd Jul 2000

Degradation In The Brockman River And Ellen Brook Catchments, Western Australia, Brian Lloyd

Natural resources published reports

An eight day survey of degradation in the Ellen Brook and Brockman River catchments revealed several areas of concern. Key concerns are:

Erosion and sedimentation

Various forms of erosion were observed during the survey that would cumulatively have an effect on the quality of both the Ellen Brook and the Brockman Rivers, and ultimately the Swan River. Erosion resulted from many situations including landholder management, subdivision design and infrastructure maintenance. Raising awareness as to consequences of erosion and sedimentation, along with remedial techniques and best management practices is recommended for the various levels of stakeholders.

Eutrophication

Eutrophication has been established …

Clobazam For The Treatment Of Intractable Childhood Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan, Ali O. Shaabat Jul 2000

Clobazam For The Treatment Of Intractable Childhood Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan, Ali O. Shaabat

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Clobazam is a newer 1,5-benzodiazepine used for the treatment of epilepsy. It is better tolerated and less sedating than other benzodiazepines. It has yet to gain wide use for epilepsy in the Middle East. Our objective is to report our experience with clobazam for the treatment of childhood epilepsy. METHODS: A cohort of children with intractable epilepsy, defined as recurrent seizures after at least 3 anti-epileptic medication trials, were included prospectively. Clobazam was added to a maximum dose of 2 mg/kg/day. Follow-up by two pediatric neurologists was performed. Therapeutic response was recorded as complete (no seizures), good (>50% …

Nighttime Construction Issues, Donn E. Hancher, Timothy R. B. Taylor

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report addresses several issues to consider when considering performing highway construction work in Kentucky at night. Surveys of other state departments of transportation and Kentucky highway contractors were made to identify best practices and concerns. An advisory committee of experienced KyTC engineers plus contractor representatives met extensively to identify successful approaches for handling key issues which arise on night-time construction projects.

Seventeen specific recommendations have been proposed to enhance the Cabinet's use of night-time construction for its projects. These cover several issues related to night-time work, including contract requirements, traffic control, law enforcement, personnel issues, lighting and public awareness. …

Reversal Of Rice Yield Decline In A Long-Term Continuous Cropping Experiment, Achim Dobermann, David Dawe, Reimund P. Roetter, Kenneth G. Cassman Jul 2000

Reversal Of Rice Yield Decline In A Long-Term Continuous Cropping Experiment, Achim Dobermann, David Dawe, Reimund P. Roetter, Kenneth G. Cassman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In a long-term continuous cropping experiment at Los Baños, Philippines, three rice (Oryza sativa L.) crops were grown each year with the goals of maximum annual grain production and high N use efficiency. Our objective was to identify the factors responsible for the restoration of yields occurring after 1991. From 1968 to 1991, grain yields declined at an annual rate of 1.4 to 2.0%. From 1991 to 1995, dry season (DS) yields in the highest N treatment increased to within 80 to 100% of the simulated yield potential; yields in the unfertilized control did not increase. Increased solar radiation, …

Pre-Surgical Evaluation For Epilepsy Surgery, David W. Loring, Kimford J. Meador Jul 2000

Pre-Surgical Evaluation For Epilepsy Surgery, David W. Loring, Kimford J. Meador

Saudi Medical Journal

Neuropsychological testing may reflect subtle structural changes that may not be readily apparent with neuroimaging studies, and physiologic disruption of normal neural function secondary to epileptic activity. Neuropsychological testing is used during the pre-operative evaluation for epilepsy surgery to assess functional brain status, which, in turn, provides important information on the risks for post-operative neruopsychological deficits and also provides confirmatory evidence of seizure onset laterality in patients whose seizures originate in temporal lobes. This review will focus primarily on the pre-operative neuropsychological of candidates for temporal lobectomy surgery since they represent the majority of individuals undergoing ablative epilepsy surgery, and …

Gastrointestinal Parasites Presentations And Histological Diagnosis From Endoscopic Biopsies And Surgical Specimens, Abdelrahman E. Mohamed, Zuhal M. Ghandour, Mohamed A. Al-Karawi, Mohamed I. Yasawy, Bassam Sammak

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To diagnose parasitic ova or worms during endoscopy, surgery or by histology from endoscopic or surgical specimen in our patients. METHODS: The diagnosis of parasitic disease in our patients was made by histological examinations from biopsies obtained either during an upper gastrointestinal or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy or from surgical specimens. RESULTS: Parasites were seen in endoscopic biopsies from upper gastrointestinal tract in 21 patients. Schistosoma ova was seen in biopsies from stomach or duodenum (12 patients). Small intestine biopsies showed Giardiasis (8 patients) and strongyloides (1 patient). Colonic biopsies showed schistosoma ova by paraffin section or by squash technique …

Cutaneous Myiasis Due To Dermatobia Hominis In Saudis, Javed Akhter, Syed M. Qadri, Abdelmageed M. Imam

Saudi Medical Journal

Cutaneous myiasis infestations are normally found in South and Central America but increasing travel has resulted in their spread to non-indigenous countries with increasing frequency. We report two cases of cutaneous infestation by Dermatobia hominis in Taif, Saudi Arabia. There was no history of travel outside Saudi Arabia. The source of infection appears to be domestic cattle indicating that these infestations may be endemic in this region.

Comparison Of Three Leaf Area Index Meters In A Corn Canopy, Wally Wilhelm, K. Ruwe, Michael R. Schlemmer Jul 2000

Comparison Of Three Leaf Area Index Meters In A Corn Canopy, Wally Wilhelm, K. Ruwe, Michael R. Schlemmer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Measurement of leaf area index (LAI) is critical to understanding many aspects of crop development, growth, and management. Avail- ability of portable meters to estimate LAI non-destructively has greatly increased our ability to determine this parameter during the cropping season. However, with several devices on the market, each with an independent set of protocols for gathering accurate estimates of LAI, it is necessary for scientists to have comparisons of these meters under field conditions before selecting one for purchase and use. The objective of our study was to compare the LAI estimates by three meters (AccuPAR, LAI-2000, and SunScan) to …
