Methods Of Exposure Assessment: Lead-Contaminated Dust In Philadelphia Schools, Charles V. Shorten, M K. Hooven

Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to develop a method that would accurately assess children's exposure to lead in schools in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We examined three wipe sample protocols: one included accessible surfaces such as desktops and windowsills, the second included inaccessible surfaces such as the top of filing cabinets and light fixtures, and the third included hand wipes of the study participants. Surface wipes were collected at 10 locations from accessible and inaccessible classroom surfaces (n = 11 at each location) and from the palms of student subjects in the same locations (n = 168). We found a significant difference in …

The Cbn As A Catalyst To National Economic Policy And Development., J. O. Sanusi

Bullion

The paper examined the activities of the Bank into perspectives, particularly with the often-mis-construed belief the CBN should be held accountable for all the woes of the Nigerian economy. It also reviewed and appraised the performance of the CBN in the effort to meet its statutory mandate and adapt to the circumstances of the new global trend in Central Banking in which the maintenance of price stability supercedes all other objectives of monetary policy. The challenges facing the Bank are enormous, but not insurmountable. Efforts are already being made to confront these challenges. The instrument autonomy recently granted to the …

An Analysis Of Plan Colombia As It Meets Criteria For Protracted Military Intervention, Sarah Roper Jul 2000

An Analysis Of Plan Colombia As It Meets Criteria For Protracted Military Intervention, Sarah Roper

Student Work

For over thirty years, the conflict in Colombia has wrecked havoc on the country's civil society, political order, military capabilities, and the stability of the entire region. Bom of drug cartels and exacerbated by police and military corruption, rebel guerrilla groups, and ineffective international policy, drug trafficking and the consequences thereof pose a critical threat to policy makers worldwide. Consequently, the Colombian and United States governments committed, in February 2000, to new legislation, entitled Plan Colombia, aimed at reducing narcotics cultivation, processing, and distribution by fifty percent by the year 2006. While the plan is ambitious, it is riddled with …

Time-Course Haemolymph Juvenile Hormone Titres In Solitarious And Gregarious Adults Of Schistocerca Gregaria, And Their Relation To Pheromone Emission, Ca Volumetric Changes And Oocyte Growth, Amer I. Tawfik, Karl Treiblmayr, Ahmed Hassanali, E. O. Osir

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The haemolymph JH III titres in solitarious and gregarious adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, were examined in relation to corpus allatum (CA) volumes, aggregation-maturation pheromone production in males and oocyte growth in females. The JH titres of gregarious females were generally higher than those of solitarious females at all ages studied. The titre patterns, however, were similar: relatively high on day 10, dropping to low levels between days 20 and 25, before rising again by day 25. In the solitarious males, the JH titre was very low on day 10 after fledging, but increased gradually and reached a maximal amount …

Interstate Cooperation And Educational Development In Nigeria., Bankole Oni Jul 2000

Interstate Cooperation And Educational Development In Nigeria., Bankole Oni

Bullion

The paper highlights on interstate cooperation and educational development in Nigeria. Education is a major instrument for economic and social development. The process of allocating resources to the sector vis-a-vis other sectors depends again on the political priorities of the decision makers. Whether or not different states, which belong to the same ideological camp, can and will cooperate in the field of education in future is not certain. The empirical analysis of existing facts have further strengthened the hypothesis that there exists a structural and cause - effect relationship between education and other aspects of the social structure. Political competition …

Evaluations Of The Effectiveness Of A Web-Based Graduate Epidemiology Course, Molly A. Rose, Anthony J. Frisby, Michael D. Hamlin, Susan S. Jones

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

An online epidemiology course was developed, implemented, and evaluated for graduate nursing students through the collaborative efforts of nursing faculty and information, education, and instructional design staff of the library at a health sciences university. This epidemiology course is a core curriculum course for graduate nursing students. The course was piloted with 14 students (one student in Romania); the initial online offering ran concurrently with a traditional classroom section. Extensive evaluation data were collected and analyzed to compare the effectiveness of the classroom and distance-learning formats. Areas of evaluation included objective measures, such as midterm and final examination scores and …

Television Satellite Broadcasting In Russia After The Financial Crash Of 1998: The Allure And Adversity For Western Companies, Daniel E. Rosen Jul 2000

Television Satellite Broadcasting In Russia After The Financial Crash Of 1998: The Allure And Adversity For Western Companies, Daniel E. Rosen

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the legal and economic challenges faced by Western satellite broadcasters investing in Russia, particularly in light of the current economic crisis. While Russian media laws, such as the Mass Media Law and the Law on Television and Radio Broadcasting, initially created a favorable investment environment, their ambiguities and the government’s broad interpretive powers pose significant risks. The analysis highlights the need for Western companies to carefully weigh the potential benefits of investment against the heightened risks stemming from political, economic, and legal uncertainties.

Beating Again And Again And Again: Why Washington Needs A New Rule Of Evidence Admitting Prior Acts Of Domestic Violence, Linell A. Letendre Jul 2000

Beating Again And Again And Again: Why Washington Needs A New Rule Of Evidence Admitting Prior Acts Of Domestic Violence, Linell A. Letendre

Washington Law Review

Batterers in Washington who use violence to control their intimate partners routinely avoid conviction and punishment due to the difficulties of prosecuting domestic violence cases. Prosecutors often face complex problems, such as recanting victims, lack of other witnesses, and juries inherently biased against battered women. Although some Washington prosecutors have found ways to introduce evidence of prior domestic violence in certain limited circumstances, Washington Rule of Evidence 404(b) generally precludes the use of evidence showing prior domestic violence. This Comment argues that this evidence rule prevents the admission of highly probative evidence of prior abuse against current or past victims …

Group And Individual Treatment Of Compulsive Hoarding: A Pilot Study, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Jeff Wincze, Kamala A.I. Greene, Heidi Douglass Jul 2000

Group And Individual Treatment Of Compulsive Hoarding: A Pilot Study, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Jeff Wincze, Kamala A.I. Greene, Heidi Douglass

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Treatment of compulsive hoarding has rarely been described in the literature, apart from standard treatments for obsessive compulsive disorder of which hoarding is thought to be a subset. This paper presents preliminary findings from seven patients treated with cognitive and behavioral interventions derived from Frost and Hartl's (1996) theoretical model of hoarding. Six clients attended 15 group treatment sessions over 20 weeks plus individual home treatment sessions and one client received 20 weekly-sessions of individual treatment only. After 20 weeks, treatment resulted in noticeable improvement in several hoarding symptoms for five of the seven patients, especially reduction in excessive acquisition …

Long Term Intubation And Successful Weaning In Two Children With Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Hashim Javed, Madhavachandran P. Nair, Roshan L. Koul, Alexander Chacko, Mohammad Fazalullah Jul 2000

Long Term Intubation And Successful Weaning In Two Children With Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Hashim Javed, Madhavachandran P. Nair, Roshan L. Koul, Alexander Chacko, Mohammad Fazalullah

Saudi Medical Journal

No definite criteria exists in Guillian-Barre Syndrome in children regarding prolonged ventilation through an endo-tracheal tube without tracheostomy and successful weaning using a T-piece. Here we report two such cases of Guillian-Barre Syndrome requiring prolonged intubation for 56 days and ventilation for 30 days and ultimately successfully weaning them using the T-piece. Both the children eventually made a complete recovery, highlighting the point that in children prolonged intubation and ventilation using the portex tube is equally good, if not, better than tracheostomy with its attendant risks.
