Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

We investigated the emergence of third-stage larvae (L3) of Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis from the slugs Deroceras laeve, Deroceras reticulatum, and the snail Catinella sp. in the laboratory and from D. laeve on the tundra. Third-stage larvae emerged from 8 of 8 D. laeve and 8 of 8 D. reticulatum housed at 20°C in darkness and from 9 of 10 D. laeve and 5 of 5 Catinella sp. housed at 21°C with 10-12 hours of light/day. Larvae emerged from D. laeve and D. reticulatum over a wide range of infection intensities (2-179 and 20-65, respectively), and the patterns of emergence …

Toward A Provident Working Class: French And English Social Reform Rhetoric, 1880-1914, James R. Gavan Aug 2000

Toward A Provident Working Class: French And English Social Reform Rhetoric, 1880-1914, James R. Gavan

Masters Theses

This research examines the rhetoric of belle epoque English and French middle class social observers. Addressing the "social question," they engaged in a debate on how best to appease an impoverished, alienated, and increasingly militant working class. Historians cite this discourse, and the meager legislation it fostered, as a transition from the unbridled nineteenth century laissez-faire to the welfare democracy characteristic of the twentieth century.

Central to the "social question" was the issue of improving social relations without altering existing class hierarchies (which favored the middle classes). Many social commentators shunned the passage of legislative safety nets in favor of …

Women's Income-Generating Activities In Turkey, Nihan Kayaardi Aug 2000

Women's Income-Generating Activities In Turkey, Nihan Kayaardi

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Home working has recently reemerged in both less-developed and developed countries. It is observed in both unskilled and highly skilled work. In general, there are no estimates of the number of women who bring work into their homes. Home working is part of the informal economy that is disguised and shadowed in the economy. Most of this type of employment is hidden in official statistics. In Turkey, for example the female informal labor force is about 68% (Kumbetoglu, 1993). Most of the work done by the women is piecework, and their earnings depend on the piece-rate.

This thesis utilizes existing …

Influential Factors Perceived By Adult Students In The Selection Of Nontraditional Graduate Degree Programs, Kristi World-Mccormick Aug 2000

Influential Factors Perceived By Adult Students In The Selection Of Nontraditional Graduate Degree Programs, Kristi World-Mccormick

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study identified factors that influenced adult learners in their selection of nontraditional graduate programs of study over traditional programs in their communities. Twenty subjects who had each completed one of two nontraditional graduate degree programs, teacher education or management, were interviewed to learn what motivated them in their college selection process. The programs from which they graduated were identified as nontraditional because they were: ( 1) offered in communities hundreds of miles from the main campuses; (2) offered entirely during evening and/or weekend class times; and (3) designed to be completed in an accelerated time frame. Both programs …

Differential Infectivity And Division Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Human Peripheral Blood Leukocytes, Jacqueline Y. Channon, Rosanne M. Seguin, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

When tachyzoites were incubated with human peripheral blood leukocytes in vitro, more monocytes and dendritic cells than neutrophils or lymphocytes were infected. Albia, Iowa In The 1920s: Coal, Corn And Change, Derek S. Oden Aug 2000

Albia, Iowa In The 1920s: Coal, Corn And Change, Derek S. Oden

Student Work

This is the story of Albia in the 1920s. Albia, the seat of Monroe County, is located in south central Iowa. The town achieved its greatest population gain during the first decade of the twentieth century. Access to ample railroad transportation, trade with its hinterland, and manufacturing aided this expansion. Albians also enjoyed a thriving period of coal mining and agriculture. This era of prosperity ended during the early 1920s because the demand for local coal fell sharply. As a result, the population of the county began to shrink. Following the war, agriculture also entered a recession when farmers struggled …

Critical Cultural Theory And Social Learning: An Exploration Of Health & Fitness Magazines' Roles In Propagating Eating Disorders., Terry Nelson

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine what health and fitness magazines tell women about their bodies and health, particularly Shape, Self, Fitness, Fit, Women's Sports & Fitness, and Health. Guided by several mass communication theories that suggest mass media is particularly powerful in its ability to construct, establish and reinforce a culture's definition of beauty, this inductive analysis focused on the latent meanings in the texts. The study's objective was to determine if these magazines were true to their health premise. The texts analyzed included visuals, how-to articles, body transformation stories, celebrity features, and texts that focused on …

Service Learning In An Age Of Standards, Terry L. Pickeral, Judy Bray Aug 2000

Service Learning In An Age Of Standards, Terry L. Pickeral, Judy Bray

Service Learning, General

"The new standards have to do with application of basic learning. Students take things that at one time they simply memorized and instead take them into real-life settings. The graduation standards offer the opportunity for every student and teacher to bring learning to a higher level. Application, synthesis, analysis and integration of information are what real learning is all about."

Jim Grimmer, a teacher of philosophy at Richfield High School in Richfield, Minn., articulates one view of the connection between service learning and academic standards. At a time when academic standards, along with assessments and accountability, represent the big-dog reform …

Persistence Of Motor Adaptation During Constrained, Multi-Joint, Arm Movements, Robert A. Scheidt, David J. Reinkensmeyer, Michael A. Conditt, W. Zev Reymer, Ferdinando A. Mussa-Ivaldi

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We studied the stability of changes in motor performance associated with adaptation to a novel dynamic environment during goal-directed movements of the dominant arm. Eleven normal, human subjects made targeted reaching movements in the horizontal plane while holding the handle of a two-joint robotic manipulator. This robot was programmed to generate a novel viscous force field that perturbed the limb perpendicular to the desired direction of movement. Following adaptation to this force field, we sought to determine the relative role of kinematic errors and dynamic criteria in promoting recovery from the adapted state. In particular, we compared kinematic and dynamic …

Economic Sanctions: Their Ineffectiveness At Attaining Their Stated Foreign Policy Goals With Specific Reference To The Cuban Case, Harold Lee Ingram Aug 2000

Economic Sanctions: Their Ineffectiveness At Attaining Their Stated Foreign Policy Goals With Specific Reference To The Cuban Case, Harold Lee Ingram

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

International economic sanctions are not singularly modem phenomena. In ancient Greece, Pericles of Athens enacted the Megerian Decree in 432 BC in response to hostile acts taken against it by neighboring Megera. Later, during the American Revolutionary War, Thomas Jefferson encouraged the use of sanctions as an effective tool of coercive foreign policy to be used against the colonists' enemies. Since then, following the historical precedence of economic acts like the Megerian Decree, economic sanctions have continued to be used as tools of coercive diplomatic policy. For example, following World War I, President Woodrow Wilson encouraged the use of economic …
