Reducing The Presence Of Raptors At Kansas City International Airport, Robert Johnson, Dan Mcmurtry Aug 2000

Reducing The Presence Of Raptors At Kansas City International Airport, Robert Johnson, Dan Mcmurtry

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

Nationwide, between 1991 and 1997, the FAA wildlife strike database reported 939 raptor strikes, which accounted for 12% of all reported wildlife strikes. At Kansas City International Airport (MCI), between 1997 and 1999, 9 raptor strikes occurred involving known aircraft and 27 raptor strikes occurred involving unknown aircraft. These raptor strikes represented 13% of all wildlife strike events at MCI. MCI has a large yearly influx of raptors (red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, northern harriers, and great horned owls) during the period of October through March. From October 1997 until December 1999, 40 raptors were removed from the airport through the …

Management Of Rodent Populations At Airports, Jessica Dewey, Gary W. Witmer

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

Birds and other wildlife are a serious problem at U.S. airports. Certain species are more hazardous to aviation safety than others, most often due to the size and behavior of the species. Raptors, including hawks, vultures, and eagles, were the fourth most common bird group reported in bird strikes to the Federal Aviation Administration from 1991 - 1997, and hawks specifically were the fifth most common bird species group reported in bird strikes in Canada during the same time period. Red-tailed hawks were the fifth most common bird species reported in U.S. Air Force bird strikes from 1985 - 1999, …

Birds present a direct hazard to aviation safety at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. We monitored the bird hazards at NASNI between April 1996 and April 1997, made recommendations to resolve the bird hazard to aircraft and evaluated WS Operational program at NASNI. We documented 27 bird/aircraft strikes on NASNI from April 1991 to April 1997. Of these, western gulls represented 77%, mallards 9%, American coots 4.5% and great blue herons 4.5%. Most strikes that occurred between March and September were attributed to western gulls, where as waterfowl were struck most often between October and February. The …

The Phenomenology Of Panic Disorder In Adolescents, Wesley D Allan Aug 2000

The Phenomenology Of Panic Disorder In Adolescents, Wesley D Allan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Phenomenology of Panic Disorder in Adolescents examines correlates of panic disorder in adolescents. Specifically, 20 adolescents with panic disorder were compared with 20 adolescents with a non-panic anxiety disorder (e.g., overanxious disorder). Results showed that adolescents with panic disorder displayed higher levels of anxiety sensitivity (i.e., anxiety pertaining to the symptoms of anxiety such as heart palpitations). Based on the obtained results, anxiety sensitivity is proposed as a potentially critical variable in the examination of adolescent panic disorder.

Identifying And Responding To Skills Shortages, David L. Passmore Aug 2000

Identifying And Responding To Skills Shortages, David L. Passmore

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Skills shortages limit economic growth. Tight labor markets in the United States have highlighted for policy–makers the problems that skills shortages create for the economy. Yet, it is difficult to document and respond to skills shortages. No single, direct measure identifies a skills shortage. Identification requires multiple economic indicators. When skills shortages are identified, prescription of responses to alleviate shortages is equally problematic. Selection of investment in training as one response requires that other factors affecting labor supply and price must be ruled out as contributing causes of shortages.

Manpower Planning In Hong Kong, Anthony Cheng Aug 2000

Manpower Planning In Hong Kong, Anthony Cheng

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

1. VTC has been using the Manpower Requirement Approach (MRA) for projecting disaggregate sectoral employment by skill/occupational group. The whole exercise comprises isolated studies of the 25 economic sectors based on employers’ perception of possible trends. 2. Labour Market Analysis (LMA) differs from MRA in terms of both focus and data requirements. LMA focuses on information from all players in the labour market, uses primary as well as other available secondary data, and analyzes data using also econometric models. 3. For consistency, the Task Force has conceptualized an LMA framework, outlined as: Level One Aggregate Economic Level. Level Two Aggregate …

Stress Management For Teachers In Vocational Education And Training Sector, Gloria, Ching Wah Chan Aug 2000

Stress Management For Teachers In Vocational Education And Training Sector, Gloria, Ching Wah Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Much of the stress of teaching is related to problem behaviour in the classrooms. The most effective way of managing behavioural problems is to prevent them from arising, and to minimize their occurrence. The focus is the teacher's ability and willingness to create a successful learning situation appropriate to the student's needs. Essentially, stress can be a challenging, exciting stimulus to personal growth, whilst excessive stress can prove damaging to psychological and physical health because it often triggers emotional and physical strain that may be harmful. So, people are motivated to cope with stress. However, the reactions to stress and …

Thirsty Horses And Public Waterholes, Joyce Marie Turnbull Aug 2000

Thirsty Horses And Public Waterholes, Joyce Marie Turnbull

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

This paper deals with the challenges for vocational education and training administrators in the Northern Territory of Australia to respond to calls for action to address apparently opposing needs and forces. Issues considered include the incongruity of development theory and globalisation theory in the context of the Australian outback; the provision of effective training and employment programs to a largely traditional Indigenous population in remote Northern Territory communities; the clash between strategic planning in governmental and organisational contexts and the transmitted Indigenous world picture; the ambiguity of training for employment or the establishment of an enterprise culture in the remote …

Quantitative Evaluation Of The Educational Programmes On Students’ Awareness Of Social Responsibility, Loky Tsui, Sau-Wan, Teresa Lee Wong

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

As discrimination and hazardous working conditions have been constituting social costs in the Hong Kong economy, legislative progress in enforcing equal opportunity, safety and health at work becomes obvious with the enactment of discrimination ordinances and the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance in 1997. Educational programmes were being conducted for students to realise such social responsibility soon after they graduate. The evaluation of the educational programmes is based on the empirical data collected after the delivery of educational packages.

Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The performance indicator for training for open employment is on how successfully the trainee is being employed in a job. Other than providing the job skills required which was always the emphasis in the vocational training, there are other issues, equally important, that should be addressed to prepare the trainees to enter into the competitive open job market. Independent and social skills should be strengthened through programmed activities. Attention should also be paid to minimize the mismatch between skills training and job opportunities to the trainees. Based on the provision in the skills centres for the people with disabilities aiming …
