A Ypt/Rab Effector Complex Containing The Sec1 Homolog Vps33p Is Required For Homotypic Vacuole Fusion, Darren F. Seals, Gary Eitzen, Nathan Margolis, William T. Wickner, Albert Price
Dartmouth Scholarship
Yeast vacuoles undergo priming, docking, and homotypic fusion, although little has been known of the connections between these reactions. Vacuole-associated Vam2p and Vam6p (Vam2/6p) are components of a 65S complex containing SNARE proteins. Upon priming by Sec18p/NSF and ATP, Vam2/6p is released as a 38S subcomplex that binds Ypt7p to initiate docking. We now report that the 38S complex consists of both Vam2/6p and the class C Vps proteins [Reider, S. E. and Emr, S. D. (1997) Mol. Biol. Cell 8, 2307-2327]. This complex includes Vps33p, a member of the Sec1 family of proteins that bind t-SNAREs. We term this …

Interview No. 1663, Rogelio Carlos Jr.
Combined Interviews
Rogelio Carlos, Jr. was born and raised in Smeltertown. He recalls swimming in the river, hunting, and hiking with other neighborhood friends as a child and details the layout of Smeltertown. He states there was a strong sense of community in this small town among the older residents. The problem was with the younger children who created gangs, especially in the Calavera neighborhood. Rogelio discussed his education as a young boy, he attended a Mexican school in Smeltertown; there were only two schools in this area during the 1950’s. He discusses vocational education and extracurricular activities such as basketball. He …

UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Alternative Development Strategies For Rural Communities: Views From The Great Plains, John C. Allen, Rebecca Filkins, Sam Cordes
Alternative Development Strategies For Rural Communities: Views From The Great Plains, John C. Allen, Rebecca Filkins, Sam Cordes
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
In the past, rural economic development policies have traditionally taken one of two forms: direct aid (various forms of financial incentives granted to individual firms) or the provision of infrastructure, such as buildings or roads. However, some argue that these policies have become less efficient and that new alternatives should be considered. These new alternatives include indirect aid to businesses (improved access to capital and business services) as well as active labor market policies (which seek to help match demand and supply in the labor markets). Which policies would be most successful in promoting economic development in rural areas? This …

A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard
A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard
Western North American Naturalist
The importance of maintaining healthy riparian communities to sustain natural stream processes and function is well documented. Land management agencies in the West are currently developing methods to assess and monitor riparian community condition to adapt land use practices that would better protect rangeland ecosystems. To determine whether these methods also provide an indication of abiotic and biotic stream condition, we compared the classification system of riparian communities developed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to physical parameters of stream condition and to aquatic invertebrate community assemblages. Thirty-three sites in 19 different streams of the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada …

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Henshawi) Spawning And Downstream Migration Of Juveniles Into Summit Lake, Nevada, Gary L. Vinyard, Alice Winzeler
Western North American Naturalist
The only remaining self-sustaining native population of lacustrine Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi) not affected by nonnative salmonids is in Summit Lake, Humboldt County, Nevada. Annual spawning runs in 1993 and 1994 were monitored at a fish trap on Mahogany Creek, the only spawning tributary for Summit Lake. Number of spawners was similar in both years, with 1290 upstream migrants observed in 1993 and 1255 in 1994. In 1993, 137 postspawners (10.6% of upstream migrants) returned to the lake, and in 1994, 434 postspawners (34.6% of upstream migrants) returned downstream through the fish trap. Two distinct groups …
