United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Monoclonal antibody (MAb) 12F5 reacted with 35 Escherichia coli O26 isolates and cross-reacted with 1 of 365 non-E. coli O26 isolates. MAb 15C4 reacted with 30 E. coli O111 strains and 8 Salmonella O35 strains (possessing identical O antigen) but not with 362 other bacterial strains. Lipopolysaccharide immunoblots confirmed MAb O-antigen specificity.

Making A Difference: Human Service Interest Group Influence On Social Welfare Program Regulations, Richard Hoefer Sep 2000

Making A Difference: Human Service Interest Group Influence On Social Welfare Program Regulations, Richard Hoefer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social workers increasingly understand the importance of political action to affect legislative policy-making. This paper sheds light onto the unexplored subject of interest group influence on the executive branch, specifically on the writing of program regulations for social welfare programs. It describes groups active in the process and what they do in their quest for influence. It also presents a preliminary model of interest group influence on regulation writing. Results show that having greater access, articulating a liberal policy position, choosing a "better" strategy and devoting more resources to influence efforts are all significant predictors of a group's influence level …

Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson Sep 2000

Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study uses data from the 1990 and 1987 years of the General Social Survey to assess the effects of minority status and position in the class structure in explaining middle class African Americans' support for opportunity-enhancing and outcome-based egalitarian statist policies. Findings do not provide confirmation for prior research that has found that racial effects are predominant, but has considered a more narrow range of policies and not assessed interaction effects. First, neither additive nor interactive effects of race and social class explain support for government policies that are premised on providing people with skills to compete in the …

From Politics To Efficiency In Choice Of Law, Erin A. O'Hara, Larry E. Ribstein Sep 2000

From Politics To Efficiency In Choice Of Law, Erin A. O'Hara, Larry E. Ribstein

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article proposes a comprehensive system for choice of law that is designed to enhance social wealth by focusing on individual rather than governmental interests. To the extent practicable, parties should be able to choose their governing law, subject to possible procedural protections designed to ensure that the choice is real. In the absence of an explicit agreement, courts should apply rules that facilitate party choice or that select the law the parties likely would have contracted for -- that is, the law of the state with the comparative regulatory advantage. The system relies on clear rules that enable the …

IIMB Management Review

There have been some very interesting books in the recent past on the small industry. With competition increasing and protection for various sectors being selectively removed, it is time that we looked at some sectors which have been accorded protection in the past - like co-operatives and small industries- and see how they have been performing. It is also important for us to get some insights into recent research and practice in these sectors. In this
context, K C Nanda's book raises our level of expectation. However as one reads through the pages and pages of casual conclusions and off-the-cuff …
