Metal Biogeochemistry Of A Mine Contaminated Estuarine-Coastal System In Sw Spain, Charlotte Braungardt Jan 2000

Metal Biogeochemistry Of A Mine Contaminated Estuarine-Coastal System In Sw Spain, Charlotte Braungardt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The aim of this project was to investigate the biogeochemistry and transport of metals in a river/estuarine system contaminated by acid mine drainage. The Rio Tinto and Rio Odiel drain a metalliferous mining area in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in the south-west of Spain. The pH values in the rivers were low (< 3) and dissolved metal concentrations were . extremely high, up to 2.6 mM Zn, 860 \M Cu, 6.0 jaM Cd and 72 nM U . The seasonal cycle of low precipitation and flash floods was identified as an important factor in generating the more severe contamination of the rivers with Fe, A l , Mn, Zn, Cu, N i , Co and Cd observed during autumn and winter, compared to spring and summer. The estuarine behaviour of dissolved Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, N i , Co and Cd was primarily = controlled by pH. Apart from an addition of these metals from the sediment in the upper Tinto estuary, conservative mixing was observed up to pH ~ 5 (at S ~ 30), above which Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, N i and Co were removed from solution. Voltammetric speciation studies showed that Cu complexing organic ligands (logK'cuL ~ 11-5, CL = 32 - 199 nM) in the estuary were saturated, and thermodynamic calculations indicated that the concentration of Cu^"^ reached values (pCu^"^ < 9) that are toxic to some marine and estuarine organisms. The estimation of fluxes indicated that the dissolved metal export from this system to thecoastal zone averages 101 d'^ Zn, 2.3 t d"' Cu, 180 kg d"^ N i and 236 kg d"^ Co, with higher contributions during wet, compared to the dry seasons. On-line measurements of Zn, Cu and N i in the Gulf of Cadiz revealed metal plumes associated with the Tinto/Odiel system and the Guadiana and Guadalquivir rivers. As a result of entrainment by the Atlantic Ocean surface current flowing into the Mediterranean Sea, the metal contamination in waters of the Gulf of Cadiz is transported south and eastward.

Development Of Novel Sensors For Anions Of Environmental Interest, Thierry Le Goff Jan 2000

Development Of Novel Sensors For Anions Of Environmental Interest, Thierry Le Goff

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A range of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) for the determination of nitrate has been produced based upon rubbery membranes having covalently bound betaine salt sensor molecules. The best performing electrode contained N,N,N-triallyl leucine betaine (6.5 % m/m) covalently bound to polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS) (43.5% m/m), with 2-nitrophenyIoctyl ether (2-NPOE) as solvent mediator (40 % m/m) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as free radical initiator (10% m/m). The Nemstian slope was -59.1 mV per decade over a linear range of 1 x 10'^-5 x 10"^ mol dm'^ nitrate, a limit of detection of 0.34 pmol dm'^ nitrate and a selectivity coefiBcient for nitrate against …

Speciation Of Mercury By Chromatography Coupled With Atomic Spectrometry, Helen Elisabeth Louise Armstrong Jan 2000

Speciation Of Mercury By Chromatography Coupled With Atomic Spectrometry, Helen Elisabeth Louise Armstrong

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A commercial GC-AFS instrument has been developed and optimised for the speciation of organomercury. This instrument couples a GC oven to a modified atomic fluorescence detector via a ceramic pyrolyser. Organomercury compounds in dichloromethane solvent were directly injected through a Programmable Temperature Vaporiser Injector onto a DBl Megabore column. Once separated, the compounds eluted from the column and were atomised in the pyrolyser then detected by AFS. The direct injection technique, ceramic pyrolysis design and argon purged detector have improved previous instrument designs by enhancing and maintaining sensitivity. The instrumental limit of detection was determined to be 0.25 pg Hg …

Sub-Surface Migration Of An Oil Pollutant Into Aquifers, Louise Ann Macdonald Jan 2000

Sub-Surface Migration Of An Oil Pollutant Into Aquifers, Louise Ann Macdonald

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The risk to groundwater quality following a sub-surface spillage of immiscible pollutants such as oil, petroleum and other organic chemicals is an increasingly potent threat, through escalating industrial application of such pollutants. This study significantly enhances the understanding of the flow of immiscible pollutants within soil, through field scale investigations to define the spatial variability and extent of a contaminated area and the development of a comprehensive framework for the analysis of oil pollutant migration. This study represents a first attempt by researchers to analyse oil pollutant migration on a wide range of scales, from pore- to field-level. The research …

Measurement And Modelling Of Estuarine Chemistry, Adrian Gavin Punt Jan 2000

Measurement And Modelling Of Estuarine Chemistry, Adrian Gavin Punt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A l-D tidally resolving hydrodynamic model of the Tweed Estuary has been encoded using the Estuarine Contaminant Simulator, ECoS. The model results of axial and time series variations in water elevation, salinity and turbidity are compared to field data recorded during the LOIS survey programme. The organic and inorganic controls on estuarine pH have also been investigated by encoding a new template to predict the effect of changing salinity and temperature on the pH of estuarine water. The template has been coupled to the hydrodynamic model to predict pH variations in the estuary. The model results have shown conservative behaviour …

The Effects Of Hydrology And Nutrient Inputs At South Milton Ley On The Ecology Of The Common Reed Phragmites Australis (Cav. Trin. Ex Steudal), Paula Angele Powell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

South Milton Ley is a small coastal wetland in Southern England. A sand-bar forms periodically at its seaward end and separates fresh water from the sea. The common reed Phragmites australis dominates the wetland and when a sand bar is present a shallow freshwater lake forms. Monthly water budgets were prepared for the years 1994, 1995 and 1996 and intermittent flooding of the Ley was also monitored. This information was used to calculate a range of residence times (between one hour and eleven days) and the characteristics of various flow regimes when the sandbar, which dams the Ley, is open …

Evidence Issues In Domestic Violence Civil Cases, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken Jan 2000

Evidence Issues In Domestic Violence Civil Cases, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken

All Faculty Scholarship

New laws and policies aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence have been adopted across the country over the last twenty years. The legal approaches taken to protect battered women and control family violence have resulted in significant changes in family law. New laws include statutes permitting civil protection or restraining orders, and laws requiring that domestic violence be considered in custody and/or visitation decisions. Both of these types of statutory reforms can provide protection to adult victims of domestic violence and their children. Evaluating a parent's fitness by considering past acts of violence to other family members results in decisions …

Collecting Child Support: A History Of Federal And State Initiatives, Jane C. Murphy, Naomi R. Cahn Jan 2000

Collecting Child Support: A History Of Federal And State Initiatives, Jane C. Murphy, Naomi R. Cahn

All Faculty Scholarship

In this article we sketch an overview of the increasing federal involvement in the child-support area. Because the federal role has grown so dramatically over the past 25 years, family law practitioners need to understand the different federal programs and requirements that affect state management of child-support programs. While for many low-income parents state agencies handle child-support establishment and collection, the federalization of child support has practical implications when it comes to both establishing and enforcing child support. For example, as the time limits of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act begin to have their effects, child support …

The Employment Requirements Of Disabled Persons : A Study Of The Development Of State Supported Employment Provision., Timothy Paul Kleinschmidt Jan 2000

The Employment Requirements Of Disabled Persons : A Study Of The Development Of State Supported Employment Provision., Timothy Paul Kleinschmidt

Other Faculty of Health Theses

This thesis deals with the historical background concerning the development of disability-related employment measures and the employment exclusion experienced by disabled persons. In particular, the enquiry focuses upon the early post-war period up until the introduction in 1997 of the New Deal for Disabled Persons. The thesis postulates that: 1. major policy shifts within the Employment Service Disability Services (ESDS) in the early 1990s did not sufficiently reflect the employment integration needs of disabled persons; in spite of a major social values shift, to welfare-to-work measures for disabled persons these measures proved to be problematic; problems existed because of the …

A Study Of The Molecular Immunogenetics Of Type 1 Diabetes In Man, Mohamed Mirza Jahromi Jan 2000

A Study Of The Molecular Immunogenetics Of Type 1 Diabetes In Man, Mohamed Mirza Jahromi

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Type 1 diabetes is caused by immune destruction of pancreatic β cells. There is increasing evidence that genes outside the MHC region contribute to the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Cytokines due to their role in immune regulation seem to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Three hundred and eight patients with type 1 diabetes and 150 normal controls were genotyped for polymorphism in the genes for IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-6, and TGF-β1. All assays employed in this study were PCR based. The IFN-γ CA repeats was an octa-allelic repeat and the 3 / 3 genotype showed …

The Effect Of Therapeutic Horsemanship Program On Emotionally Disturbed Boys, Alisa J. Greenwald Jan 2000

The Effect Of Therapeutic Horsemanship Program On Emotionally Disturbed Boys, Alisa J. Greenwald

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The relationships between humans and animals have been associated with various therapeutic implications. While there is no agreed upon name, the term "pet facilitated therapy" has become widely accepted. Pet facilitated therapy has been particularly adopted to describe the relationship between humans and domestic animals. In contrast to public attitudes of twenty years ago, the field of animal-human relationships is now respected as a legitimate area of research investigation (Levinson, 1982.) Numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits of the relationships between domestic animals and humans; however, there continues to be little empirical evidence that specifically addresses the relationship …

Emission, Dispersion And Local Deposition Of Ammonia Volatilised From Farm Buildings And Following The Application Of Cattle Slurry To Grassland, Richard Alexander Hill Jan 2000

Emission, Dispersion And Local Deposition Of Ammonia Volatilised From Farm Buildings And Following The Application Of Cattle Slurry To Grassland, Richard Alexander Hill

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Emissions of ammonia (NH3) into the atmosphere, principally from agricultural sources, have been implicated in the pollution of forests, moorlands and grasslands, through the subsequent deposition of reduced nitrogen (NHx -N). Consequently, legislation has been implemented to control both the transboundary transport and local environmental impacts of NHx. This thesis investigates the emission, dispersion and local deposition of NH3 from two sources that are major components of national NH3 emissions inventories, slurry applied to grassland and naturally ventilated cattle buildings. A N balance method was identified for determining the time-average deposition of NH3 downwind of a farm building, whilst an …

Writing The Real: The Collages Of Hannelore Baron, Valerie James Reardon Jan 2000

Writing The Real: The Collages Of Hannelore Baron, Valerie James Reardon

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Baron's work has not been extensively studied nor is it known in full. Critical writings and scholarly attention have focused on the work as representative of Holocaust suffering. This thesis intervenes in that assumption by arguing that it is possible to understand Baron's processes of making collage as a significant case study in the problematic of signification and a complex of differences none of which are reducible to or deducible from each other. Drawing together a range of biographical information, primary source material and close readings of many of Baron's collages (including two hitherto unseen series) traces are revealed of …

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler Jan 2000

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Covariance (or not) among the first-order dimensions of firm-level entrepreneurial processes underpins a fundamental and non-trivial difference between the entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial posture constructs. Utilizing a typology developed for multi-dimensional constructs, we operationalized each construct according to its specific conceptualization (relationships among the dimensions) and compared and contrasted each construct in an identical nomological network. Although we found support for both theories, the entrepreneurial orientation construct was more robust in explaining additional variance in growth. Additionally, our findings suggest that the means through which the first-order dimensions are operationalized—latent vs. summates— significantly affect the analysis.

Processing Writing: From Text To Textual Interventions, Caroline Bergvall Jan 2000

Processing Writing: From Text To Textual Interventions, Caroline Bergvall

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This submission comprises the main bulk of the critical and textual work I have researched and developed over the last five years. Throughout this period, I have been particularly interested in exploring issues of interdisciplinarity for writers and text-practitioners, at both a critical and a methodological level. An interest in cross-media and site-related approaches to writing plays an important role in this. This is reflected in the thematics of the various critical texts, as well as in the fairly broad range of textual modes submitted. As a whole, this work can be seen in close continuity with my pedagogical involvement …

Discrimination Based On Hiv/Aids And Other Conditions: "Disability" As Defined Under Federal And State Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, David W. Webber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, we examine the disability definition "problem" from the standpoint of HIV infection, specifically HIV infection in its "asymptomatic" phase . . . We begin by summarizing the need for federal nondiscrimination standards offering protection for individuals with HIV. We then provide a brief discussion of the definition of disability under the resulting legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). We summarize the early judicial and administrative views of the ADA as protecting individuals with HIV. We next turn to judicial interpretation of the ADA in cases in which that understanding has been disputed, including, most …

The Health Belief Model And Self Breast Examination In Nurses, Valerie L. Holwerda Jan 2000

The Health Belief Model And Self Breast Examination In Nurses, Valerie L. Holwerda

Masters Theses

The relationship between frequency of self breast examination and health belief model variables was assessed using a convenience sample of nurses. The self-administered survey measured perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, health motivation, and confidence on 5-point Likert-type scales previously developed by Champion (1993). Individual items measured the frequency of self breast examination and demographic variables. Correlational statistics were used to determine relationships. The results of the data analysis using the Spearman correlation found that perceived benefits (p=.027), health motivation (p=.0289) and confidence (p=.008) were positively correlated with frequency of self breast examination. Perceived barriers (p=.0002) were negatively …
