Six different doses of PGF2a were injected into uterine tissue samples obtained from three groups using an isolated-organ bath. The response of the uterine muscles to PGF2a was recorded. For each dose the result was assessed as latent and amplitude values within each group and among the groups. In the young group, there were no significant responses in latent period or amplitude against various doses …

A Mouse Model For Evaluating The Induction Of Liver Glucose-6- Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Halothane, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, İlhan Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of halothane anesthesia in different doses and a period of two weeks on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity of mouse liver were investigated. The mean and SD of G6PDH for liver of normal mice were 0.036±0.017 U/mg protein and 1.756±0.814 U/g liver, respectively. Although there was histopathological damage in the liver, liver weights in treated mice increased significantly compared to control animals. Increasing the dosage of halothane inhalation induced liver G6PDH enzyme activity (U/g liver) by 84%, 42% and 4%, showing an inverse relation with the dose of halothane (0.25, 0.50, 1.00 cc twice daily for two weeks). Although …

The average blood glucose level was determined to be 112.04±5.19 mg/dl in males and 106.32±9.68 mg/dl in females and 110.06±4.19 mg/dl in the population. The blood glucose level was highest (141.07±13.67 mg/dl) in April, and lowest (69.14±9.75 mg/dl) in September. It was deter- mined that the level of blood glucose was related to temperature and reproduction.

Euphemistic Codes And Tell-Tale Hearts: Human Assistance In End-Of-Life Cases, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

A euphemism is defined as the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive word or expression for one that is harsh, indelicate, or otherwise unpleasant taboo; allusion to an offensive thing by an inoffensive expression. This article deals with medical euphemisms used commonly through medical codes in hospitals for end-of-life patient care. It examines the extent to which fear shapes decision making in critical care units - fear of medical failure, and fear of litigation if not "everything" is done to prolong life, no matter how agonizing. Furthermore, being trained to save lives, health care providers often lack the courage to …

Rethinking The Risk Of Defined Contribution Plans, Regina T. Jefferson

Scholarly Articles

This article analyzes the risk of shortfall in the expected retirement benefits in defined contribution plans, as regulated by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). The article compares and contrasts the allocation of investment risks between defined benefit and defined contribution plans. This article demonstrates that current pension law offers inadequate protection of the expected retirement benefit in defined contribution plans and proposes additional fiduciary, insurance, and funding protection for defined contribution plans.

The On Line Determination Of Mercury In Process Streams Using Atomic Spectrometry, Noel Kumar Brahma

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

On-line systems for monitoring mercury in liquid and gaseous production and waste streams have been developed, utilising atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) as the basis for detection. Instrumentation has been designed for unattended continuous operation. Laboratory chemistries for the vapour generation of mercury, normally performed off-line in batch mode, have been adapted and optimised for continuous, flow-injection analysis for varying sample types and chemical forms of mercury. The system has typical analysis cycle of 7 minutes, a limit of detection of 10 pg ml ˉ¹ a linear range up to 100 µg ml ˉ¹ and has been applied in industrial environments …

Determination Of Actinide Elements In Environmental Samples By Icp-Ms, Jason Bedford Truscott Jan 2000

Determination Of Actinide Elements In Environmental Samples By Icp-Ms, Jason Bedford Truscott

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Methods for the determination of the actinide elements in water, biological, soil and sediment samples have been developed using on-line solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Initial applications utilised a commercially available resin, namely TRU-Spec resin, for efficient removal of the matrix prior to elution of uranium and thorium analytes. Comparative analyses of reference materials and natural water samples from Plymouth and Dartmoor demonstrated significant improvement in precision and speed of analysis by using TRU-Spec coupled to ICP-MS compared with alpha spectrometry. Further applications of the TRU-Spec resin for …
