LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative research study investigated the history of Our Lady of the Lake College from 1923 through 2000. It endeavored to determine the influence of the times, the events, the people, and the traditions that have contributed to its development and progress in the seventy-seven years that have passed since it was established. The study also sought to document the important institutional events that transpired during this time period and establish a continuity of the College's progress through the years from a hospital-based diploma program in nursing to a free standing degree granting institution. In addition to the evolutionary development …
Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Copper Metal Using Copper(Hexafluoroacetylacetonate)(2) Alcohol Adducts., Hui Fan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of alcohol adducts of Cu(hfac)2 (Cu(hfac)2·ROH, where hfac- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate and ROH = C1, C2, C3, C4 alcohols) were synthesized as precursors for CVD of Cu metal. The low melting points of some Cu(hfac)2·ROH adducts allowed them to be used as liquid precursors at the common precursor evaporation temperature (ca. 80°C). Metallic Cu films were obtained using most of these compounds as precursors under either H2 or N2 mixed with the corresponding alcohol vapor. The details of each CVD reaction were studied by IR analysis of byproducts and electrical and thickness measurements on the resulting films. A reaction …
Creation And Characterization Of 25 Kda Outer Membrane Protein (Omp25) Deletion Mutants In Brucella Species., Matthew David Edmonds
Creation And Characterization Of 25 Kda Outer Membrane Protein (Omp25) Deletion Mutants In Brucella Species., Matthew David Edmonds
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The genus Brucella is composed of Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogens that impact man and animals. Brucella species express a 25 kDa major outer membrane protein termed Omp25. To determine the role of Omp25 in virulence, mutants were created in Brucella abortus (BA25), Brucella melitensis (BM25), and Brucella ovis (BO25) that contain disruptions in the omp25 gene (Deltaomp25 mutants). In the murine brucellosis model, each Deltaomp25 mutant was attenuated when compared to the virulent parental strain. To assess the ability of the B. abortus and B. melitensis mutants to colonize and induce abortions in the ruminant host, cattle and goats in …

Professional Versus Caregiver Ratings Of The Communicative Abilities Of Adults Displaying Moderate To Profound Communication Challenges., Paul Steven Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ninety caregivers of 30 adults with moderate-to-serve cognitive, sensory, and physical challenges living in an institutional setting participated in this study to investigate caregiver perceptions of communicative abilities. A mixed effects design was used to compare communication scores of thirty adults. The adults were assigned to three communication proficiency groups. The communicative scores with challenges that were generated with three different assessment activities: a direct/participatory evaluation conducted by a certified speech-language pathologist, an interview of the caregivers, and an observation of daily routine activities. Results indicated that all of the rating procedures differentiated the three communication proficiency groups. Correlations between …
Insecticide Resistance And Resistance Mechanisms In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus., Jeffrey Dwayne Stancil
Insecticide Resistance And Resistance Mechanisms In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus., Jeffrey Dwayne Stancil
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Significant resistance to malathion and resmethrin was found in insecticide-treated field populations of adult Culex quinquefasciatus , Say, compared with a laboratory and non-treated field strain. Resistance to both insecticides varied during the active control season and was associated with the frequency of insecticide application. Geographic variations in resistance levels were noted, and significant differences occurred between separate populations within the same mosquito control districts. Four model substrates were assessed for their suitability in detecting elevated esterase activity associated with malathion resistance. Esterase activities towards all substrates were significantly higher in field stains than a laboratory strain. Esterase activities toward …

Consumers' Reasoned Behavior Toward American Alligator Leather Products., Yingjiao Xu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study determined consumers' perception of and attitude toward American alligator leather products and evaluated factors affecting consumers' purchase intention of the products. The Fishbein and Ajzen (1975, 1980) theory of reasoned behavior served as the theoretical framework for the study. The influence of six variables on purchase intention was measured: attitude toward purchase based on product attributes, subjective norm with respect to purchase, traditional attitude toward fashion products (fashion involvement), personality traits (self-confidence and self-consciousness), price perception (price-quality schema and prestige sensitivity), and demographics. The correlation between consumers' usage of media for fashion information and purchase intention was also …
Terrebonne Farms, Louisiana: An Anthropogeographic Study Of A New Deal Resettlement., Lisa Kay Adam
Terrebonne Farms, Louisiana: An Anthropogeographic Study Of A New Deal Resettlement., Lisa Kay Adam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines Terrebonne Farms, a 1940's community in south Louisiana established by the federal government during the New Deal period. Planned by the Resettlement Administration and overseen by the Farm Security Administration, the community was one of approximately one hundred experimental towns or resettlements located around the nation. Although these resettlements varied widely in their organization, appearance, and history, few writers have chosen to focus on individual communities. This study combines recollections of original residents and local accounts of Terrebonne Farms with its government records and photographs to create a detailed and contextual description of a single resettlement. In …
Female High School Biology Students' Biofilm -Focused Learning: The Contributions Of Three Instructional Strategies To Patterns In Understanding And Motivation., Jo Dale Hill Ales
Female High School Biology Students' Biofilm -Focused Learning: The Contributions Of Three Instructional Strategies To Patterns In Understanding And Motivation., Jo Dale Hill Ales
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study examined three instructional strategies used with female high school biology students. The relative contributions of the strategies to student understanding of microbiology and motivation in science were analyzed. The science education community targeted underachievement in science by implementing changes in content and practices (NRC, 1996). Research suggested that teachers facilitate learnirig environments based on human constructivism (Mintzes, Wandersee, & Novak, 1997) that is rooted in meaningful learning theory (Ausubel, Novak & Hanesian, 1978). Teachers were advised to use both visual and verbal instructional strategies (Paivio, 1983) and encourage students to construct understandings by connecting new experiences to …
Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fresh -Cut Sweetpotatoes., Elif Erturk
Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fresh -Cut Sweetpotatoes., Elif Erturk
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fresh-cut sweetpotato products have potential to create new value-added market opportunities. To determine optimum film packaging and storage temperature, fresh-cut sweetpotato slices were packaged with semipermeable polyolefin films, having different gas transmission characteristics and kept at 2 or 8°C for 14 days. The films chosen, in order of increasing permeability, were Cryovac PD900, PD961, and PD941. Among the films, only PD941 film bags maintained an aerobic atmosphere during the 14 days at both temperatures. However, the high weight loss in slices with PD941 film bags will limit the use of these film bags as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) material. PD961 …
Evaluation Of Insecticide Resistance In Louisiana Adult Mosquitoes And The Efficacies Of Selected Larvicides., Stacy Lee Bearden
Evaluation Of Insecticide Resistance In Louisiana Adult Mosquitoes And The Efficacies Of Selected Larvicides., Stacy Lee Bearden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pesticide resistance in Louisiana mosquitoes has never been examined on a state-wide basis. In 1996, first component of this monitoring program examined selected pesticide efficacies and documented current pesticide resistance. Ground ULV-applied FyfanonRTM (96.8% malathion and Pyrocide RTM (96.8% + 1% natural pyrethrum) were applied to caged Culex quinquefasciatus adults (Denham Springs [Livingston Parish] and Lake Charles [Calcasieu Parish]) and Aedes sollicitans (Vermilion Parish). FyfanonRTM caused significantly different (p < 0.05) mortalities among each species and strain within 24hrs (95% Aedes, 48% Denham Springs, and 14% Lake Charles). Pyrocide RTM also produced significantly different mortalities (99%, 70%, and 38%, respectively). Malathion and permethrin were topically applied to 3--5 day old adult mosquitoes from 14 parishes. St. Martin parish Cx. quinquefasciatus was most susceptible to malathion (2.58 mug/mul), and the Vermilion strain was most resistant (417.05 mug/mul). Resistance is based on a ≥5-fold resistance ratio. Calcasieu parish strain was least resistant to permethrin (1.93 mug/mul), and the St. Tammany parish strain was most resistant (40.86 mug/mul). Detecting pesticide resistance by bottle bioassay technique was compared to topical bioassay. Both techniques were effective in detecting resistance for selected Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex species in Louisiana. Ground ULV 97% malathion was applied to caged Cx. quinquefasciatus adults from a mosquito abatement district, agrichemical farmland, and a susceptible colony. No significance (p > 0.05) existed in mosquito mortality between the agrichemical area and the abatement district. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israeliensis (VectoBacRTM WDG and VectoBacRTM 12AS) and Bacillus sphaericus (VectoLexRTM WDG and VectoLexRTM CG) were …

Activation And Metabolism Of P-Nitrosophenoland 2,2'-Thiobis-Ethanol By Horse Liver And Human Alcohol Dehydrogenase: Toxicological Implications., Billy Fred Dudley Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
C-nitroso compounds are reactive intermediates in the toxic sequelae of nitroarene metabolism. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) contributes significantly to NADH-dependent C-nitroso reduction by cytosol relative to NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase (NQOR). NADPH-dependent pNSP reduction by liver cytosol of ADH+ animals is mostly dicumarol-sensitive which implicates NQOR as the major NADPH-dependent activity. Although, extensive structural homology between horse and different isozymes of human ADH exist, significant differences occur within the active site, which account for great variability among substrate specificities, kinetic constants, and response to inhibitors. We have studied the metabolic activity of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (HLADH), purified class I alphaalpha, beta …

Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean
Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Observation of advertising in current use suggests that a new type of ad is emerging as a product positioning tool. The new ad features third-party organization (TPO) product endorsement as one of the elements of the ad (e.g. "Car of the Year" award by Motor Trend magazine, and "4-star" mutual fund rating from Morningstar). Marketers appear to be using favorable TPO statements about their products to enact their positioning strategy. This dissertation proposed that TPO endorsements are perceived by consumers as extrinsic quality cues, similar to the established quality cues of brand, price, retailer reputation, and warranty. This proposition was …

Gray's Ghost—A Conversation About The Onshore Trust, Karen E. Boxx
Gray's Ghost—A Conversation About The Onshore Trust, Karen E. Boxx
Articles
A trust is an arrangement whereby one person (the trustor) transfers property to another person (the trustee) and directs the trustee to hold the property for the benefit of another person (the beneficiary). Multiple persons may fill each role; for example, there can be several beneficiaries or co-trustees. One person may play several of these roles; for example, the trustor may also serve as trustee or may be a beneficiary of the trust. However, if the same person plays all three roles alone, then no trust is created.
A self-settled trust is a trust that a person settles, or establishes, …
Who Owns The Customer? The Emerging Law Of Commercial Transactions In Electronic Customer Data, Jane Kaufman Winn, James R. Wrathall
Who Owns The Customer? The Emerging Law Of Commercial Transactions In Electronic Customer Data, Jane Kaufman Winn, James R. Wrathall
Articles
The Information Revolution is changing the way commerce acted and value is defined within transactions. Before the Internet and "e-business" took center stage, "electronic commerce" meant electronic data interchange, just-in-time inventory systems, supply chain automation, and corporate reengineering.
But the rise of the Internet as a communications medium has coincided with a shift in management focus, from merely trying to improve the efficiency of business logistics systems to a more holistic perspective on improving customer relationships. Intangible assets such as intellectual property rights, human capital in the form of employee knowledge, and established relationships with customers and suppliers are playing …

Little is known of the way that nurses' roles have evolved within a hospital setting in which efficient and affective interventions include caring for sicker patients. The emergence of the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) is one role that nursing developed to participate in an interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to caring for sicker patients.
This qualitative study examined the exemplary role of eleven PCCs who practice in a regional nonprofit medical center. Research methodologies included interview, non-participant observation, and analysis of historical data. Interview questions were developed from the literature review on collaboration, caring, expertise, communication, and knowing the patient. Cognitive …
