Influences On Initial Acceptance And Intention To Use A Modern Family Planning Method In Hiv -Discordant Couples In Lusaka, Zambia, David Emerson Roth
All ETDs from UAB
An important means of decreasing vertical transmission and numbers of AIDS orphans would be reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in couples in which one or both members are HIV-positive. The use of family planning methods will be essential for this reduction. A previous study (Mark et al. submitted for publication) with HIV-discordant couples in Zambia attempted to influence acceptance of family planning methods in a three-armed intervention trial. The current study includes the same subjects as that intervention trial. Data on background characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices relevant to family planning were collected at the time of enrollment to …

Research outputs pre 2011
This report represents the vegetation component of a project designed to provide on-going monitoring of wetland salinity and biological resources in wetlands of the agricultural zone of south-west Western Australia. Maintenance of wetland biological diversity in the agricultural zone is one of the major objectives of the Salinity Action Plan. Due to their low position in the landscape, wetlands are the habitat most affected by salinisation.
Sentenced To Purgatory: The Indefinite Detention Of Mariel Cubans, Yvette M. Mastin
Sentenced To Purgatory: The Indefinite Detention Of Mariel Cubans, Yvette M. Mastin
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Indefinite detention of Cuban immigrants is unconstitutional. Immigrants detained in American jails are being treated the same as individuals serving criminal sentences or awaiting disposition of their cases. Congress should, therefore, create a mandatory and uniform system of procedural due process. The system should be modeled after the procedural due process system established by the Kansas Legislature in the Kansas Sexually Violent Predator Act of 1994. Although the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to rule on the indefinite detention of the Mariel Cubans, lower courts have held that the indefinite detention of Mariel Cubans does not violate the Constitution. Nonetheless, …

Immunity Of Volunteer Health Care Providers In Texas: Bartering Legal Rights For Free Medical Care Comment, Gwendolyn Pulido
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Texas should not rely on Congress to cure the problem of indigent access to healthcare. Despite recent proposals to create a unified healthcare system, the United States continues to allow the welfare of its poor citizens to ride the wave of the free market. Unlike the U.S., several international declarations have acknowledged the inherent human right to healthcare including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the United Nations’ adoption of the Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (The Covenant). Despite the recognition of a right to healthcare, there is still no …

Political Questions, Judicial Questions, And The Problem Of Washington V. Glucksberg, Carl E. Schneider
Political Questions, Judicial Questions, And The Problem Of Washington V. Glucksberg, Carl E. Schneider
Other Publications
Over a century and a half ago, Alexis de Tocqueville famously said, "Scarcely any political question arises in the United States that is not resolved, sooner or later, into a judicial question." Physician-assisted suicide superbly illustrates Tocqueville's acute observation. For a number of years, assisted suicide was the prototype of a (nonpartisan) political question. Interest groups brought it to public attention. Public discussion of it flourished. Legislatures debated it. Citizens in several states decided in referenda whether to make it legal. Almost suddenly, however, this classic political process was transformed into a judicial one by the startling and strongly stated …

Assessment Of The Level Of Resistance To Bifenthrin, Cypermethrin And Methomyl Insecticides In Bemisia Tabaci Gennadius) And Trialeurodes Vaporariorum (Westwood) Whitefly Populations From Selected Sites In Kenya, Thomas Njaramba Njuguna
All Master’s Theses
Despite heavy use of insecticides against whiteflies in Kenya, no information was available on their resistance to insecticides. In this study, the level of resistance of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Tria/eurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) populations to methomyl (carbamate), cypermethrin and bifenthrin (pyrethroids) was assessed using leaf dip and glass vial bioassay methods. Whitefly samples were obtained from a laboratory culture and five field sites in Kenya: Kibwezi, Kitui, Mwea, Kihara and Nguruman. The samples were collected from tomatoes, eggplants (brinjals), squash (corgettes), Dolichos, French beans and Soya beans. The resistance levels of the field populations were determined using the probit analysis …
