A Comparison Of Adjudicated Spousal Abusers And Controls Using The Mjvl.Pl-2 And Mcml-Ul, Sandra L. Lundblad Nov 2000

A Comparison Of Adjudicated Spousal Abusers And Controls Using The Mjvl.Pl-2 And Mcml-Ul, Sandra L. Lundblad

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Approximately 21.000 women per week are assaulted by their domestic partners in the United States (Stamp & Sabourin, l 995). Beasley and Stoltenberg ( 1992) advised that "work with abusive men could benefit from careful attention to the role of anger and personality disorders in this population" (p.316). Research generally indicates that male spousal abusers have been characterized in various ways and nave been created with varying levels of success. In order to design effective prevention and treatment plans, it is important to comprehend the nature of spousal abuse, and what research has to say about intimate abusers and their …

Cultural Policy In Singapore: Negotiating Economic And Socio-Cultural Agendas, Lily Kong Nov 2000

Cultural Policy In Singapore: Negotiating Economic And Socio-Cultural Agendas, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, I examine the role of cultural policy in a newly industrialised economy, which is at the same time a state with a short history and only nascent beginnings in nation-building and efforts to construct a distinctive cultural identity. Using Singapore as the site of analyses, develop an understanding of the intersection between the economic and socio-cultural agendas behind cultural development policies. I illustrate the hegemony of the economic, supported by the ideology and language of pragmatism and globalisation. At the same time, I explore the reception of and attempts to negotiate (and at times, contest) state policies …

The Effects Of Patch Size On Hummingbird Visitation And Pollination In Habracanthus Belpharohachis, November 2000, Monica Lisa Saldaña Nov 2000

The Effects Of Patch Size On Hummingbird Visitation And Pollination In Habracanthus Belpharohachis, November 2000, Monica Lisa Saldaña

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In tropical forests, plant species are sparsely distributed and in order to increase their probability of pollination they have developed bright, showy flowers that offer nectar to attract pollinators. In this study, I examined how the pollination rates are affected by the number of inflorescences present in patches of Habracanthus belpharohachis. In order to do this, I measured the percent of pollinated flowers from 22 small patches with one to five inflorescences, and flowers from 14 large patches with more than 15 inflorescences. I also recorded the number of visitations by the primary pollinator of H. belpharohachis, the Purple-throated Mountain-gem …

How To Set Up A Mediterranean Fruit Fly Community Baiting Scheme, Sonya Broughton Nov 2000

How To Set Up A Mediterranean Fruit Fly Community Baiting Scheme, Sonya Broughton

Biosecurity published reports

Second edition.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) is one of the most serious economic pests, infesting over 300 fruit and vegetable species worldwide. Medfly is thought to originate from Africa and is a pest in many countries including North America, Central America, South Africa, Europe and Australia. In Australia, Medfly is present only in Western Australia where it is considered to be naturalised. Although Medfly are occasionally detected in eastern Australia, these outbreaks are eradicated at considerable expense by local agricultural departments.

For Western Australia, Medfly poses a serious threat to backyard and commercial fruit production, and restricts access to …

Guidelines For The Administration Of Oral Examinations, Mohammed M. Jan, Amira R. Al-Buhairi

Saudi Medical Journal

Practical oral examinations are considered an important and often a difficult part of medical school examinations. They represent an accurate and direct mean of assessing student9s interaction with patients and their clinical and technical skills. This paper reviews an outline for the administration of oral examinations. The review is based on the medical literature detailed discussions with many senior examiners from different medical systems, and the author9s personal experience. In summary, although examiner9s judgment is crucial, some general rules remain important for fair and consistent evaluation of students. First, examiner9s attitudes should be as friendly as possible with an objective …

Mortality Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Two Soils With Different Physical And Chemical Properties, D. N. Mubiru, Mark S. Coyne, John H. Grove Nov 2000

Mortality Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Two Soils With Different Physical And Chemical Properties, D. N. Mubiru, Mark S. Coyne, John H. Grove

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Wild and domesticated animals can harbor a pathogenic Escherichia coli strain designated as O157:H7. Potential health problems could occur if strain O157:H7 is a more robust survivor in defecated waste than commonly used indicator bacteria. A laboratory study was conducted to assess E. coli O157:H7 survival relative to a nonpathogenie E. coli strain in two soils with different physical and chemical characteristics. Bacteria in the inoculated soils were enumerated on a weekly basis for 8 wk using a most probable number (MPN) technique. First-order decay models were used to describe bacteria mortality in the soils. Decay series were described slightly …

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe Nov 2000

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe

Natural resources published reports

Salinity in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia is one of the most significant challenges facing the State's agricultural sector.

Efforts to manage the increasing effect of salt influenced and threatened farming land requires not only the implementation of new farming systems, but a new way of thinking and attitude to production more in tune with environmental and technological limitations.

While past environment lobby pressures have significantly focused on other production activities such as mining and forestry, the future is likely to see increased community interest in agricultural production systems.

Consumers World wide are becoming more environmentally sensitive, with global media …

The Exclusion Of Hiv-Positive Immigrants Under The Nicaraguan Adjustment And Central American Relief Act And The Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act, Statutory Interpretation, Communicable Disease, Public Health, Legislative Intent, Shayna S. Cook Nov 2000

The Exclusion Of Hiv-Positive Immigrants Under The Nicaraguan Adjustment And Central American Relief Act And The Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act, Statutory Interpretation, Communicable Disease, Public Health, Legislative Intent, Shayna S. Cook

Michigan Law Review

The United States has turned away immigrants infected with the human immunodeficiency virus ("HIV") under the public health exclusion of the Immigration and Nationality Act ("INA") since the mid-1980's. Since Congress codified the HIV exclusion in 1993, any alien applying for an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa, adjustment of status to lawful permanent resident, or refugee status must first have a blood test for HIV. The HIV exclusion is not absolute, however. Each HIV-positive alien can apply for one of two waivers of the HIV exclusion that are available in the INA. When an alien applies for immigrant or permanent resident …
