Linking Young And Old Through Intergenerational Programs, Tess Scannell Jan 2000

Linking Young And Old Through Intergenerational Programs, Tess Scannell

Intergenerational

Historically, the family with its extended network of generations and relations was responsible for the various nurturing, educational, and economic functions required to maintain and support all of its members. Over the course of the last century, however, America has become highly segregated by age, and family functions have been assumed by a range of more or less age-specific institutions. Children attend agesegregated schools; adults work in environments almost exclusive of children under 16 and adults over 65; elderly people often live in age-segregated housing; and both children and older persons are cared for in age-segregated facilities (day or long-term).

New Efforts To Engage Youth In Legislative Advocacy, Wendy Schaetzel Lesko Jan 2000

New Efforts To Engage Youth In Legislative Advocacy, Wendy Schaetzel Lesko

Civic Engagement

The National Secretaries of State recent report confirms earlier findings that more Americans feel disconnected from government. The Council for Excellence in Government warns that "if each new generation continued to form a weaker attachment to government than the one before, the country would fairly soon find that only a small minority of citizens was connected to and involved with government." Concerted efforts are underway to test new approaches to entice young people to participate in the public policy arena at local, state, and national levels. A snapshot follows of a few promising initiatives along with some pointers on how …

Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf Jan 2000

Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf

Curriculum

This learning packet contains a set of exercises designed to stimulate the student's thinking about their community and the value of community service. It begins with a personal definition of the word "community." From this definition, the student then gathers information about the school community. Hopefully, by attending school club meetings students will increase their sense of belonging and learn about options for volunteering at their campus. The notion that young people are selfish and hedonistic is examined in a section about stereotypes and biased news reporting. To break up the "worksheet" sequence two movie assignment guides are provided, where …

Linking Learning & Serving: Teaching Core Content Through Service Learning, Kentucky Department Of Education

Curriculum

Experts agree that students learn best when their learning experience is hands-on, immediate, relevant, and what they are learning is directly tied to an experience with another human being. Service-learning is a teaching strategy that connects a service experience in the community to classroom curriculum. This book highlights ways teachers can engage students in service-learning projects that will both satisfy the core content guidelines and make learning more meaningful for students.

Keep in mind that this document only briefly touches on how to utilize service-learning to meet required core content. While the ideas contained in this document just skim the …

Models Of Medical Malpractice In Jewish Law, Brian Howard Galbut Jan 2000

Models Of Medical Malpractice In Jewish Law, Brian Howard Galbut

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Medical malpractice is largely a product of the modem era. Consequently, one might suppose that ancient sources have little to add to any meaningful discussion of the topic. Yet, numerous models and precedents directly or indirectly applicable to malpractice surface in the vast body of traditional Jewish literature of the last two millennia. These sources can lend profound insight for the physician - and others - grappling with issues of moral and legal responsibilities related to care of patients and malpractice. This thesis will first catalogue the various types of immunities, and qualifications for those immunities, granted by Jewish law …

A Redevelopment Plan For Rocky Point Park In Warwick, Rhode Island, Robert E. Azar

Open Access Master's Theses

This research project proposes a plan for the redevelopment of the former Rocky Point Amusement Park in Warwick, Rhode Island. The study first details the park's history and cultural value to the people of Rhode Island. It then defines and evaluates the environmental setting of the study area. Geographic information system (GIS) mapping is used to evaluate environmental constraints to determine the parts of the study area precluded from development and those where development is appropriate. A site survey also evaluates existing conditions of the study area. The property is next evaluated through the perspective of land use regulations and …

The Aesthetics Of Enchantment, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2000

The Aesthetics Of Enchantment, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

There are two preliminary things to be stated at the outset of any philosophical consideration of enchantment. First, traditional philosophy has been antagonistic toward the idea of enchantment: as a foundational discipline of reason, philosophy has defined itself in opposition to the non-rational. The main traditions of philosophy have regarded any form of discourse other than that centered in reason as alien, the other, as something which obscures or undermines those procedures which alone can determine knowledge and value. I presume here that enchantment would be considered “non-rational”, and also that such a designation is problematic in a number …

Evaluation Of Moisture Barriers For Fire Fighting Turnout Gear Assessment Of Product Failure And Test Method Development Predicting Failure Modes, Chastity Danielle Newsome

Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management

The purpose of this study was to investigate the failures seen in the moisture barrier of fire fighting turnout gear. Moisture barriers taken from garments in field were evaluated to establish a baseline for comparison. Moisture barriers were exposed as part of a three-piece ensemble and as a single layer moisture barrier to instrumental light exposure in a Carbon Arc Fade-ometer and natural sunlight exposure according to AATCC and ASTM test methods. After exposure, moisture barriers were visually examined using stereo and compound microscopes. A performance measurement was conducted on the exposed moisture barriers using a modified NFPA Hydrostatic Water …

Self-Care Of Gestalt Therapists, Rebecca Brownell Jan 2000

Self-Care Of Gestalt Therapists, Rebecca Brownell

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The primary objective of this study was to assess the self-care practices of Gestalt therapists. The first part of this study included a review of the literature on therapist self-care practices. Next, a theoretical connection was developed between Gestalt therapy theory, including its theoretical foundations, and therapist self-care research. A review of the literature on Gestalt therapist self-care practices found it to be an area with limited anecdotal data and no formal research. Subsequently, methods were developed to assess the self-care practices of Gestalt therapists. In the process of developing such methods, the literature was reviewed for any quantitative measures …
