Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo Jan 2000

Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo

Honors Capstones

The exocrine pancreas’ function is to synthesize and secrete a battery of enzymes in response to secretagogues. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger in a variety of tissue types, eliciting an impressive variety of biological responses. Biosynthesis of NO in the pancreas is catalyzed by two known nitric oxide synthase isoforms, NOS(I) and NOS(II). However, the role of NO in secretion from pancreatic acinar cells has been unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nitric oxide on pancreatic secretion as well as its effects on enzymes specific to the ERK signaling cascade, which leads …

As businesses continue to grow, they open themselves up to the possibility of fraud. During an average year, fraud can cost employers anywhere between $200 and $400 million dollars. A fraud can be extremely devastating to a company, by destroying customer confidence or even cause bankruptcy. The first part of the thesis is devoted to describing fraud, how to deter it from happening, and how to deal with it if it should happen. The second part of the thesis is a case study on the Cendant Corporation. This is a perfect example of how a company is affected when the …

Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers Jan 2000

Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers

Educational Studies Dissertations

This Portraits of Leadership research focuses on using children's artwork to study girls' perceptions of leadership. 244 school age children were asked to draw their image of a leader and to write descriptions of why they chose this person as a leader. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among gender, age, and creativity and choice of leader in drawing and written descriptions. Results indicate that, though both girls and boys chose males as leaders more often than females, girls' portraits conformed to the literature regarding gender roles and traditional leadership styles. Implications are suggested for educational …

Phase Determination During Normal Running Using Kinematic Data, Alan Hreljac, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Algorithms to predict heelstrike and toe-off times during normal running at subject-selected speeds, using only kinematic data, are presented. To assess the accuracy of these algorithms, results are compared with synchronised force platform recordings from ten subjects performing ten trials each. Using a single 180Hz camera, positioned in the sagittal plane, the average RMS error in predicting heelstrike times is 4.5 ms, whereas the average RMS error in predicting toe-off times is 6.9ms. Average true errors (negative for an early prediction) are +2.4 ms for heelstrike and +2.8ms for toe-off, indicating that systematic errors have not occured. The average RMS …

Enhancing Programming For Impact Through Service-Learning, National Senior Service Corps

Intergenerational

Roxanne Smith Parks, Director of the South East Texas Foster Grandparent Program and Co-Director of the Experience Corps, a Senior Corps Demonstration Project, says that when she was first asked about introducing journalling into the daily activities of her program's volunteers, she was "the biggest skeptic ... I didn't think it would work." She was worried about the time it would take, how her volunteers would respond, how the journals would work for people of diverse educational backgrounds and, mostly, about the value of doing it.

Linking Young And Old Through Intergenerational Programs, Tess Scannell Jan 2000

Linking Young And Old Through Intergenerational Programs, Tess Scannell

Intergenerational

Historically, the family with its extended network of generations and relations was responsible for the various nurturing, educational, and economic functions required to maintain and support all of its members. Over the course of the last century, however, America has become highly segregated by age, and family functions have been assumed by a range of more or less age-specific institutions. Children attend agesegregated schools; adults work in environments almost exclusive of children under 16 and adults over 65; elderly people often live in age-segregated housing; and both children and older persons are cared for in age-segregated facilities (day or long-term).
