The Use Of Uniaxial And Triaxial Accelerometers To Measure Children's "Free-Play" Physical Activity, Alise E. Ott, Russell R. Pate, Stewart G. Trost, Dianne S. Ward, Ruth P. Saunders
Faculty Publications
In order to effectively measure the physical activity of children, objective monitoring devices must be able to quantify the intermittent and nonlinear movement of free play. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the Computer Science and Applications (CSA) uniaxial accelerometer and the TriTrac-R3D triaxial accelerometer with respect to their ability to measure 8 "free-play" activities of different intensity. The activities ranged from light to very vigorous in intensity and included activities such as throwing and catching, hopscotch, and basketball. Twenty-eight children, ages 9 to 11, wore a CSA and a heart rate monitor while performing …

Crystallization And Preliminary X-Ray Diffraction Studies On The Dna-Binding Domain Of The Multidrug Transporter Activation Protein (Mtan) From Bacillus Subtilis, M. H. Godsey, N. N. Baranova, A. A. Neyfakh, R. G. Brennan
CUP Faculty Research
The N-terminal DNA-binding domain of the multidrug transporter activation protein (MtaN) was crystallized by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method using lithium chloride as a precipitant. The crystals are orthorhombic and belong to the space group I212121, with unit-cell parameters a = 49.4, b = 67.8, c = 115.0 Å. Diffraction data have been collected at 100 K to 2.75 Å resolution at a synchrotron-radiation source.

Proposed Design Modifications To Reduce Risk Of Operating Rotary Field Mowers, Katie L. White, Larry G. Wells, Scott A. Shearer, Larry R. Piercy
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The primary objective of this project was to reduce risk of injury associated with operating a rotary mower driven by a tractor power take-off (PTO) by developing and evaluating design improvements and determining their economic feasibility. Researchers have concluded that alteration of machinery design has a greater impact on the reduction of accidents than safety training. Implementation of an Operator Presence Sensing System (OPSS) and removal of the PTO are the two injury-reducing, engineering modifications evaluated by this research. Hydraulic power allows this to occur by providing dynamic braking, few moving parts (removal of the PTO), and controllable power. A …

Detection Of Solid Pigment In Dermatoscopy Images Using Texture Analysis, Murali Anantha, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background/aims: Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM), also known as dermoscopy or dermatoscopy, is a non-invasive, in vivo technique, that permits visualization of features of pigmented melanocytic neoplasms that are not discernable by examination with the naked eye. ELM offers a completely new range of visual features. One such feature is the solid pigment, also called the blotchy pigment or dark structureless area. Our goal was to automatically detect this feature and determine whether its presence is useful in distinguishing benign from malignant pigmented lesions.
Methods: Here, a texture-based algorithm is developed for the detection of solid pigment. The factors d and a …
Acidic Environments Within Tank Bromeliads And Its Effect On Microorganism Community Richness, November 2000, Jennifer Wade
Acidic Environments Within Tank Bromeliads And Its Effect On Microorganism Community Richness, November 2000, Jennifer Wade
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Elfin forest tank bromeliads were shown to have lower pH when positioned below mats of epiphytic bryophyte than in open gaps. The effect of lower pH was studied to see if it influenced microorganism community abundance, species richness, evenness and diversity. It was found that increasing levels of pH over a range of 4.3 – 5.8, increased population sizes of most microorganisms. In fact abundance of individuals in the entire community spanned over an order of magnitude (82- 1936 individuals). Species richness also increased with pH but only as a function of increased abundance of individuals. One species richness was …

Productivity Growth And The New Economy, William D. Nordhaus
Productivity Growth And The New Economy, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study is the third in a series of three papers devoted to issues in the measurement of productivity and productivity growth. The major findings are as follows. First, this study shows that the new data set used here, which develops data on total output, business sector output, and “well-measured” output, and relying on income-side data, provides a useful supplement to existing data sets. Second, there has clearly been a rebound in labor-productivity growth in recent years. All three sectoral definitions show a major acceleration in labor productivity in the last three years of the period (1996-98) relative to …

New Data And Output Concepts For Understanding Productivity Trends, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study is the second is a series of three papers devoted to issues in the measurement of productivity and productivity growth. The contributions of the present paper are three. First, it introduces a new approach to measuring industrial productivity based on income-side data that are published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The data are internally consistent in that both inputs and outputs are income-side measures of value added, whereas the usual productivity measures combine expenditure-side output measures with income-side input measures. Second, because of interest in the “new economy,” we have also constructed a set of …

Do The Rich Save More?, Karen E. Dynan, Jonathan Skinner, Stephen P. Zeldes
Dartmouth Scholarship
The question of whether higher–lifetime income households save a larger fraction of their income was the subject of much debate in the 1950s and 1960s, and while not resolved, it remains central to the evaluation of tax and macroeconomic policies. We resolve this long‐standing question using new empirical methods applied to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the Survey of Consumer Finances, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey. We find a strong positive relationship between saving rates and lifetime income and a weaker but still positive relationship between the marginal propensity to save and lifetime income. There is little support for …
