Metal Exposure In A Benthic Macroinvertebrate, Hydropsyche Californica, Related To Mine Drainage In The Sacramento River, Daniel J. Cain, James L. Carter, Steven V. Fend, Samuel N. Luoma, Charles N. Alpers, Howard E. Taylor Jan 2000

Metal Exposure In A Benthic Macroinvertebrate, Hydropsyche Californica, Related To Mine Drainage In The Sacramento River, Daniel J. Cain, James L. Carter, Steven V. Fend, Samuel N. Luoma, Charles N. Alpers, Howard E. Taylor

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A biomonitoring technique was employed to complement studies of metal transport in the upper Sacramento River affected by acid mine drainage. Metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, and Zn) were determined in a resident invertebrate, Hydropsyche californica (Insecta: Trichoptera), and streambed sediments (<62 >μm) to assess metal contamination within a 111-km section of the river downstream of the mining area. Metals in H. californica also were interpreted to be broadly indicative of metal exposure in fish. Total Hg was determined in the whole body of the insect, whereas Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn were additionally separated into …

Persistent Hantavirus Infections: Characteristics And Mechanisms, Barbara Meyer, Connie Schmaljohn Jan 2000

Persistent Hantavirus Infections: Characteristics And Mechanisms, Barbara Meyer, Connie Schmaljohn

United States Army: Publications

Hantaviruses include serious human pathogens that are maintained in nature in persistently infected rodents and that can also persistently infect cultured mammalian cells, causing little or no cytopathology. The mechanisms of hantavirus persistence are only beginning to be explored. Recent data point to subtle changes in the viral genome that might result in the differential regulation of replication and lead to persistence.

Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield Jan 2000

Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield

United States Army: Publications

This investigation examined the utility of three recombinant protein-expression systems (COS cells, insect cells and insect larvae) to cost-effectively produce biologically active human butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). It was determined that baculovirus-infected insect cells (Sf9 and High 5) expressed 3.5- and 8.2-fold, respectively, more active enzyme than COS-7 cells. Baculovirus-infected cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) insect larvae produced over 26 times more than High 5 cells ; in fact, one baculovirus-infected insect larva provided more active protein than 100 ml of insect cell culture. Analysis of the larvally expressed proteins revealed that the vast majority of BuChE expressed was inactive due to …

Determinants Of Other Post -Employment Benefit Plan Reductions And Terminations In The Post -Sfas No. 106 Adoption Era, Bruce Kinloch Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine which variables help identify firms that have reduced or eliminated postretirement benefits other than pensions (OPEBs). Mittelstaedt et al. (1995) found that the adoption of SFAS No. 106 was one of the major determinants in OPEB reduction decisions. Those authors also found that financial weakness was a determinant in such reductions. This study attempts to determine the possible factors involved in such decisions, including both financial weakness and the OPEB liability, now that its disclosure is mandated by SFAS No. 106.

The theoretical backbone of this study was traced back to the …

Things Not Spoken: The Burial Of Native American History, Law And Culture, Rennard Strickland Jan 2000

Things Not Spoken: The Burial Of Native American History, Law And Culture, Rennard Strickland

St. Thomas Law Review

The theme of this conference, "Sacred Sites and Modem Lives," is important not only for Native Americans but for all Americans. Indeed, the relationship between indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands is an issue of global significance. Throughout the world we are hearing what Dr. Erica-Irene A. Daes called "the voice of loneliness and self-destruction." What D. H. Lawrence called the spirit of the ghost of aboriginal peoples. It is a ghost with an increasingly haunting and strident voice.

Sovereignty And Sacred Land, Bardie C. Wolfe Jr., Oren Lyons Jan 2000

Sovereignty And Sacred Land, Bardie C. Wolfe Jr., Oren Lyons

St. Thomas Law Review

I was pleased to come down here for several reasons: one being that my son is down here and I get a chance to say hello to him, and the other, to talk about the importance of not only sacred sites but the term sovereignty; tribal sovereignty. We know that sovereignty is an English term, a European term. It deals with sovereigns; it deals with kings; it deals with those who control everything. Sovereignty is something we learn from being in contact with these nations for so long, I think that the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois by the …

Grounded Visions: Native American Conceptions Of Landscapes And Ceremony, Russel L. Barsh Jan 2000

Grounded Visions: Native American Conceptions Of Landscapes And Ceremony, Russel L. Barsh

St. Thomas Law Review

When the first wild strawberries flowered, my friend Chris Jocks, a Mohawk professor of comparative religion at Dartmouth, took his students to meet me at the old beaver pond on Thetford Hill. As the sun set behind a warm sprinkling of rain, we sat on top of the beaver dam and listened to successive waves of croaking, roaring, warbling, chirping, and hooting. "In the beginning," we explained that ''the Beaver made the world out of mud from the bottom of the waters. All the animals came and thanked the Creator. That is the way it was, and the way it …

Save The Whales V. Save The Makah: Finding Negotiated Solutions To Ethnodevelopmental Disputes In The New International Economic Order, William Bradford

St. Thomas Law Review

Despite the prominent contemporary phenomenon of globalization, it has proven difficult for globalists to converge and harmonize fundamental differences in values and belief systems, both within and across national boundaries. Thus, notwithstanding the efforts of human rights advocates and international regime architects, there is as yet no universal consensus as to the existence of a "set of rights and duties that cannot be derogated in the interests of nationality, race, religion, ethnicity or other competing claimants upon individual and group loyalty." The vacuum created by the absence of consensus as to the exact parameters of a corpus of nonderogable rights …

The League Of The Iroquois: From Constitution To Sovereignty, Charles Radlauer Jan 2000

The League Of The Iroquois: From Constitution To Sovereignty, Charles Radlauer

St. Thomas Law Review

Iroquois oral tradition relates that in early pre-colonial times, a peacemaker came to the Five Nations of the Iroquois, bringing a message of peace and establishing the Iroquois Confederation. The peacemaker, Deganawidah, also established a system of governance for the Five Nations,' which was incorporated into the earliest constitution of an American people. Numerous authors such as Bruce Johansen, Donald Grinde, and Gregory Schaaf have suggested that this oral tradition served as the foundation for the American Constitution. Other authors, such as Eric Jensen, have described these writings as fanciful and not based in fact; believing that many of the …
