Assessing Factors That May Predispose Minnesota Farms To Wolf Depredations On Cattle, L. David Mech, Elizabeth K. Harper, Thomas J. Meier, William J. Paul Jan 2000

Assessing Factors That May Predispose Minnesota Farms To Wolf Depredations On Cattle, L. David Mech, Elizabeth K. Harper, Thomas J. Meier, William J. Paul

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Wolf (Canis lupus) depredations on livestock cause considerable conflict and expense in Minnesota. Furthermore, claims are made that such depredations are fostered by the type of animal husbandry practiced. Thus, we tried to detect factors that might predispose farms in Minnesota to wolf depredations. We compared results of interviews with 41 cattle farmers experiencing chronic cattle losses to wolves (chronic farms) with results from 41 nearby "matched" farms with no wolf losses to determine farm characteristics or husbandry practices that differed and that therefore might have affected wolf depredations. We also used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to …

Bioethics Activities In Rural Hospitals, Ann Freeman Cook, Helena Hoas, Katarina Guttmannova

Psychology Faculty Publications

Hospital ethics committees have evolved as a response to complicated legal, ethical, and social dilemmas that accompany modern medicine. In the United States, their growth has been augmented by Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards and the Patient Self-Determination Act. There appears to be an implicit presumption that all clinical ethics consultation practices are relatively similar. Finally, there is heightened awareness of the needs for quality standards and assessment of the outcomes of ethics consultations.

Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin Jan 2000

Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

A pre/post quasi-experimental design was used to assess the impact of one state's AIDS education program on male (N = 75) and female (N= 65) inmates' perceived risk of HIV infection on the street and in prison. Post-test only comparison groups of male and female inmates were evaluated to control for the threat of testing. T-tests for paired samples were used to determine whether any significant changes occurred within groups (male & female), and t-tests for independent samples were used between groups to determine whether males or females experienced the greatest magnitude of change. Multiple regression analyses explored the …

The Right Results For All The Wrong Reasons: An Historical And Functional Analysis Of The Commerce Clause, Anna J. Cramer Jan 2000

The Right Results For All The Wrong Reasons: An Historical And Functional Analysis Of The Commerce Clause, Anna J. Cramer

Vanderbilt Law Review

Two football players rape an eighteen-year-old college student. A high-school senior carries a concealed handgun into a school building.' An arsonist burns down a trailer occupied by an interracial couple. An armed robber, after burglarizing the home of a couple and their handicapped child, speeds off in the family's Suburban.'

All of these crimes are local in nature. It seems obvious that each perpetrator would be hauled down to the local courthouse and indicted under applicable criminal law. One naturally assumes that the law would be a state statute. Yet, these perpetrators will not only face state criminal prosecution but …

Health Care Reform Through Medicaid Managed Care: Tennessee (Tenncare) As A Case Study And A Paradigm, James F. Blumstein, Frank A. Sloan Jan 2000

Health Care Reform Through Medicaid Managed Care: Tennessee (Tenncare) As A Case Study And A Paradigm, James F. Blumstein, Frank A. Sloan

Vanderbilt Law Review

TennCare is a Medicaid demonstration project that allows Tennessee to require all Medicaid beneficiaries to secure medical care through a mandatory managed care system. Enrollees contract with private managed care organizations ("MCOs'), which are responsible for organizing a network of care providers and delivering medical care to covered beneficiaries. Driven by rapidly escalating Medicaid costs, TennCare's mandatory managed care program has succeeded in saving money for the state in its Medicaid program. To secure the federal waiver that allowed the program to proceed, the state included non-Medicaid-eligible uninsured and uninsurable residents as TennCare beneficiaries. Federal matching funds accrue for all …

Age And Physical Activity Among Canadian Women And Men: Findings From Longitudinal National Survey Data, James Curtis, Philip White, Barry Mcpherson Jan 2000

Age And Physical Activity Among Canadian Women And Men: Findings From Longitudinal National Survey Data, James Curtis, Philip White, Barry Mcpherson

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

This study reports on age-group differences in leisure-time sport and physical activity involvement among a large sample of Canadians interviewed at 2 points during the 1980s. Comparisons are made for 5 age cohorts, for men and women, and without and with multivariate controls. The results contradict the usual finding of an inverse relationship between age and level of physical activity. On measures of (a) activity necessary to produce health benefits and (b) energy expenditure, Canadians over 65 were as active as, or more active than, their younger counterparts, and their activities did not decline over the 7 years between interviews. …

Using An Electronic Reminder To Improve Physician Practices At Yale-New Haven Hospital, Alicia Inés Arbaje Jan 2000

Using An Electronic Reminder To Improve Physician Practices At Yale-New Haven Hospital, Alicia Inés Arbaje

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The inappropriate use of diphenhydramine (Benadryl™) can lead to iatrogenic complications, such as cognitive decline. Electronic reminders can be effective in implementing clinical guidelines, providing decision support to clinicians, and reducing medical errors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an electronic reminder screen on physicians' routine use of diphenhydramine as a pretreatment prior to blood transfusions, and to assess their attitudes regarding this reminder. The researchers reviewed diphenhydramine use in adult inpatients before, immediately after, and one year after implementation of the reminder screen. A total of 752 transfusion episodes (467 patients) were reviewed, with …

Severity Of Illness And Prognosis Of Liver Transplant Candidates At Yale, Arvind Venkat Jan 2000

Severity Of Illness And Prognosis Of Liver Transplant Candidates At Yale, Arvind Venkat

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The increasing number of patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) listed for transplantation has forced physicians to examine the disparities in waiting times (WT) for this procedure across the US. The debate has centered upon whether physicians within regions with longer WT, such as that of Yale, are listing patients prematurely compared to regions with shorter WT . Using regional variations in WT, per this argument, to analyze access to organs is therefore misleading. To determine the appropriateness of listing practices at Yale, the authors applied stratification guidelines for liver transplant candidates adopted by the United Network for Organ Sharing …

The Savannah River Swamp is a 3020 ha forested wetland on the floodplain of the Savannah River and is located on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, SC (Fig. 1). Historically the swamp consisted of
approximately 50% baldcypress-water tupelo stands, 40% mixed bottomland hardwood stands, and 10% shrub, marsh, and open water. Tributeries of the river were typical of Southeastern bottomland hardwood forests. The hydrology was controlled by flow from four creeks that drain into the swamp and by flooding of the Savannah River. Upstream dams on the Savannah River have caused some alteration of the …

The Washakie Letters Of Willie Ottogary, Matthew E. Kreitzer Jan 2000

The Washakie Letters Of Willie Ottogary, Matthew E. Kreitzer

All USU Press Publications

Writings by American Indians from the early twentieth century or earlier are rare. Willie Ottogary's letters have the distinction of being firsthand reports of an Indian community's ongoing social life by a community member and leader. The Northwestern Shoshone residing at the Washakie colony in northern Utah descended from survivors of the Bear River Massacre. Most had converted to the Mormon Church and remained in northern Utah rather than moving to a federal Indian reservation. For over twenty years, local newspapers in Utah and southern Idaho regularly published letters from Ottogary reporting happenings-personal milestones and health crises, comings and goings, …

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey Jan 2000

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey

All USU Press Publications

Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers …

Contemporary Research In Ecological Economics: Five Outstanding Issues, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

Contemporary Research In Ecological Economics: Five Outstanding Issues, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In recent times, ecologists and economists have drawn attention to the fact ecological and economic systems are jointly determined. Once this is recognized, it seems rather obvious that ecological-economic systems ought to be studied as one system. However, because this recognition has been very recent, a number of important issues in ecological economics remain poorly understood. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss five of these outstanding issues.

What Is Fair? Experimental Evidence, David L. Dickenson, Jill Tiefenthaler Jan 2000

What Is Fair? Experimental Evidence, David L. Dickenson, Jill Tiefenthaler

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

There has been growing interest within the economics discipline in the role of equity concerns in the distribution of resources. This paper presents empirical evidence from a series of controlled laboratory experiments where third-party decision-makers must allocate resources between two individuals. The experimental results indicate that subjects view a wide range of different allocations as the fair distribution of resources. However, regression analysis indicates that both treatment effects and a few demographic variables explain some of this variation in fairness concepts. Most significantly, decision-makers rewarded subjects who earned their favorable positions and the gender of the decision-maker was an important …

An Interdisciplinary Research Agenda For The Study Of Ecological-Economic Systems In The American West, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

An Interdisciplinary Research Agenda For The Study Of Ecological-Economic Systems In The American West, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Increased public awareness of resource management issues and new attitudes toward resource conservation have led to great interest in the subject of the apposite use and management of natural and environmental resources in the American west. This paper analyzes this subject from an interdisciplinary ecological-economic perspective. The paper first identifies and then discusses four salient issues concerning the study of the west's ecological-economic systems that remain inadequately understood. Next, the paper proposes a research agenda that will enable us to shed light on some key questions concerning the functioning, health, and management of the west's ecological-economic systems.
