The Skn7 Response Regulator Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Interacts With Hsf1 In Vivo And Is Required For The Induction Of Heat Shock Genes By Oxidative Stress, Desmond C. Raitt, Anthony L. Johnson, Alexander M. Erkine, Kozo Makino, Brian Morgan, David S. Gross, Leland H. Johnston Jan 2000

Johnston

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

The Skn7 response regulator has previously been shown to play a role in the induction of stress-responsive genes in yeast, e.g., in the induction of the thioredoxin gene in response to hydrogen peroxide. The yeast Heat Shock Factor, Hsf1, is central to the induction of another set of stress-inducible genes, namely the heat shock genes. These two regulatory trans-activators, Hsf1 and Skn7, share certain structural homologies, particularly in their DNA-binding domains and the presence of adjacent regions of coiled-coil structure, which are known to mediate protein–protein interactions. Here, we provide evidence that Hsf1 and Skn7 interact in vitro and …

Cell Cycle-Dependent Binding Of Yeast Heat Shock Factor To Nucleosomes, Christina Bourgeois Venturi, Alexander M. Erkine, David S. Gross Jan 2000

Cell Cycle-Dependent Binding Of Yeast Heat Shock Factor To Nucleosomes, Christina Bourgeois Venturi, Alexander M. Erkine, David S. Gross

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

In the nucleus, transcription factors must contend with the presence of chromatin in order to gain access to their cognate regulatory sequences. As most nuclear DNA is assembled into nucleosomes, activators must either invade a stable, preassembled nucleosome or preempt the formation of nucleosomes on newly replicated DNA, which is transiently free of histones. We have investigated the mechanism by which heat shock factor (HSF) binds to target nucleosomal heat shock elements (HSEs), using as our model a dinucleosomal heat shock promoter (hsp82-ΔHSE1). We find that activated HSF cannot bind a stable, sequence-positioned nucleosome in G1-arrested …

"On Horror's Head Horrors Accumulate": A Reflective Comment On Capital Child Rape Legislation, J. Richard Broughton Jan 2000

"On Horror's Head Horrors Accumulate": A Reflective Comment On Capital Child Rape Legislation, J. Richard Broughton

Duquesne Law Review

The constitutionality of imposing capital punishment for the crime of child rape remains an open question. The author asserts that state capital child rape statutes are constitutional. The author bases his conclusion on the United States Supreme Court's capital punishment decisions, the historical treatment of sex offenses and non-homicide capital crimes, and the brutality of rape, itself. Finally, the author urges caution to ensure that capital punishment is not meted out in a racially discriminatory manner.

A Social Security Claimant's Statement That She Is Disabled And Unable To Work Does Not Necessarily Preclude A Subsequent Ada Wrongful Termination Claim: Cleveland V. Policy Management Systems Corporation, Jane M. Keenan Jan 2000

A Social Security Claimant's Statement That She Is Disabled And Unable To Work Does Not Necessarily Preclude A Subsequent Ada Wrongful Termination Claim: Cleveland V. Policy Management Systems Corporation, Jane M. Keenan

Duquesne Law Review

The Supreme Court of the United States held that the application for or receipt of social security disability benefits does not automatically estop a plaintiff from maintaining an ADA claim and that no rebuttable presumption arises when the two claims coincide; however, such a plaintiff must be prepared to sufficiently explain any apparent contradiction between (1) statements of total disability and inability to work made for the purpose of obtaining disability benefits and (2) a claim that the plaintiff is able to work but has been wrongfully terminated under the ADA.

Cleveland v. Policy Management Systems Corporation, 119 S. …

Private Insurers Suspending Workers' Compensation Benefits Are Not State Actors And Employee's Medical Treatment Must Be Reasonable And Necessary Before Due Process Attaches: American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co. V. Sullivan, Mark A. Nuzzo Jan 2000

Private Insurers Suspending Workers' Compensation Benefits Are Not State Actors And Employee's Medical Treatment Must Be Reasonable And Necessary Before Due Process Attaches: American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co. V. Sullivan, Mark A. Nuzzo

Duquesne Law Review

The United States Supreme Court held that private workers' compensation insurers are not converted to state actors merely because the business is subject to extensive state regulation, and due process procedures are not implicated until the employee's property interest attaches by proving the medical treatment was reasonable and necessary.

American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co. v. Sullivan, 119 S. Ct. 977 (1999).

Pennsylvania's Manufacturing Exemption To The Capital Stock Tax, When Limited To Manufacturing Within Pennsylvania, Violates The Commerce Clause Ppg Industries, Inc. V. Commonwealth, Craig Haller Jan 2000

Pennsylvania's Manufacturing Exemption To The Capital Stock Tax, When Limited To Manufacturing Within Pennsylvania, Violates The Commerce Clause Ppg Industries, Inc. V. Commonwealth, Craig Haller

Duquesne Law Review

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that the Pennsylvania capital stock tax statute allows a corporation operating in Pennsylvania to exempt only the value of capital stock related to manufacturing within Pennsylvania from the computation of its capital stock tax, and, under that interpretation, the manufacturing exemption facially discriminates against interstate commerce.

PPG Industries, Inc. v. Commonwealth, No. 87, 1999 Pa. LEXIS 1734 (Pa. June 17, 1999).

Final Environmental Impact Statements (WY)

This document presents and analyzes seven alternatives for winter use management in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), Grand Teton National Park (GTNP), and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway (the Parkway). YNP, encompassing 2.22 million acres, and GTNP, comprising 310,000 acres, form the core of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, described as the last large, nearly intact ecosystem in the northern temperate zone. The approved plan will serve as a management plan for the three national parks.

Due to the large volume of comments, comments and responses in this section occur in several forms. Where a "summary comment" is indicated, it is a paraphrasing of many individual comments having the same basic context. A "summary response" therefore responds to all who commented in like fashion. Where a "comment" is indicated, normally this is a singular comment in the words of the person who commented. The "response" directed toward that individual comment. In some instances, a general response is given to a series of individual comments.
