Experiential Education What Does It Look And Feel Like?, Jill M. Collins Jan 2000

Experiential Education What Does It Look And Feel Like?, Jill M. Collins

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

There are many definitions for experiential education but to me it means learning by doing. With experiential education you use a real life problem or situation and you learn theories and concepts as well as skills by dealing with the situation. When students learn through experiential education their work reaches a larger audience and serves a greater purpose than simply meeting a teacher's requirement. Unfortunately I have not had much experience with this type of education and I'm not sure how to implement it in my classes. Our school has been slowly working towards experiential education. Some of the activities …

Outdoor Adventure And Health: Supporting Empirical Data, Camille J. Bunting Jan 2000

Outdoor Adventure And Health: Supporting Empirical Data, Camille J. Bunting

Research in Outdoor Education

The intent of this paper is to introduce a theoretical framework for considering connections between outdoor adventure and health, not to present the findings of one or two new research studies. A compilation of empirical data will be presented from various studies to illustrate the proposed connections, and provide documentation for subjective observations and beliefs long held by outdoor adventure educators. Therefore, the format that follows is not one of a typical research report, but of a position paper with supporting empirical data from the author's own research.

Online Fundraising In The Human Services, Jerry D. Marx Jan 2000

Online Fundraising In The Human Services, Jerry D. Marx

Social Work

This paper examines emerging possibilities for use of the Internet in human service fundraising. Human service managers must compete for limited funds with their counterparts in educational, religious, health, and other nonprofit organizations. There is enormous potential for raising funds over the Internet; yet, this approach to resource development may not be appropriate or effective in some instances for certain human service agencies. The selection of fundraising approach must be consistent with the organizational context in which it is used. This paper provides examples of cases where use of the Internet may prove to be an effective method for human …

The Effect Of Landfills On Rural Residential Property Values: Some Empirical Evidence., Rachel Bouvier, John M. Halstead, Karen S. Conway, Alberto B. Manalo Jan 2000

The Effect Of Landfills On Rural Residential Property Values: Some Empirical Evidence., Rachel Bouvier, John M. Halstead, Karen S. Conway, Alberto B. Manalo

Natural Resources & the Environment

Abstract

The question of whether solid waste landfills affect residential property values has long been a subject of debate. Past research has resulted in mixed conclusions. The current study examines six landfills, which differ in size, operating status, and history of contamination. The effect of each landfill is estimated by the use of multiple regression. In five of the landfills, no statistically significant evidence of an effect was found. In the remaining case, evidence of an effect was found, indicating that houses in close proximity to this landfill suffered an average loss of about six percent in value.
