Pesky Citations, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Constant citation to legal authorities presents a unique problem for legal writers. Although these authorities are necessary to the analysis, integrating them can interrupt the flow of the writing, or more significantly, can obscure the meaning. Law reviews have chosen to use footnotes to address this problem. But footnotes create their own form of vertical interruption,' and many courts discourage their use in briefs. This article addresses some of the difficulties created by these pesky citations and suggests some solutions for incorporating them more smoothly.

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram Mar 2000

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram

Publications

Various structural factors influence organic farmer decision-making. Analyses that combine structure and agency provide an opportunity for understanding farmers' perceptions of the political, economic, and social "world" in which they operate. Rich conversational interviews, conducted with twenty certified organic farmers in Illinois and analyzed with multiple qualitative methods, show how farmers mediate structural concerns. In addition to political, economic, and social structures, a fourth structure is needed. Indeed these organic farmers emphasize the importance of ecological factors in their decision-making. Within the perceived economic, political, social, and ecological structures, numerous topics (i.e., marketing, policy, family, ecosystems) and subtopics (i.e., diversification, …

Rural Managed Care And Disability: Emerging Issues From Preliminary Interviews And Case Studies, Colleen Murphy-Southwick Ph.D., Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

Since the 1980s, rural access to health care information, resources and services has become increasingly problematic. The shift toward managed care complicates the picture. While some argue that managed care will devastate rural health services due to sparsely populated areas’ high costs and low profit margins, others suggest that market forces will make the health care system more efficient and re-distribute resources now concentrated in urban areas toward rural areas. Managed care is penetrating public programs

Codebook: The Lsay 1999 Teacher Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Paper No. 20, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Technical Reports

Students participating in this LSAY cohort were originally sampled in 1998 from 296 schools nationally. In 1999 the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn took part in a survey to collect information about the features and programs of schools, as well as features of teachers and teaching, which might influence the progress of students in their school and in their later work careers. The survey involved two questionnaires: (1) a school questionnaire to be completed by the principal (or other school representative) and (2) a questionnaire to a sample of ten Year 10 teachers. The assistance …

Review Of A Female Economy: Women’S Work In A Prairie Province, 1870 - 1970 , By Mary Kinnear., Nanci Langford

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

A Female Economy analyses how women disposed of their labor during the century from 1870 to 1970 in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Review Of Forging The Prairie West, By John Herd Thompson., Adele Perry Mar 2000

Review Of Forging The Prairie West, By John Herd Thompson., Adele Perry

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

John Herd Thompson's Forging the Prairie West is a wise, clever, and decisive book, though not an especially consistent one. But that hardly matters: Thompson's lively prose, trenchant observations, and firm portrayal of the Prairie West's history make for an analysis both accessible and engaging.

A Neural Network Solution To Predicting Wind Speed At Cape Canaveral’S Atlas Launch Pad, Kenneth P. Cloys Mar 2000

A Neural Network Solution To Predicting Wind Speed At Cape Canaveral’S Atlas Launch Pad, Kenneth P. Cloys

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis demonstrates the potential for using time-delay neural networks to provide Launch Weather Officers (LWOs) at 45th Weather Squadron (45 WS) with advance warning of wintertime (November-March) peak wind speeds at the Atlas launch pad. The 45 WS provides weather support to the United States space program at Cape Canaveral Air Station, NASA's Kennedy Space Center, and Patrick Air Force Base. Due to the complex wintertime environment produced by the effects of friction and instability, 45 WS LWOs consider wintertime launch pad winds their toughest forecast challenge. Neural networks were developed, trained, and tested using observations of wintertime peak …
