The Age Of The Woolly Rhino From Dream Cave, Derbyshire, Uk, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Derek C. Ford

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Dream Cave woolly rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, is a "classic" specimen of a "cold-stage" fossil fauna from central England. The find was illustrated and described by Dean William Buckland in his seminal tome Reliquiae Diluvianae (1823) during the first half of the 19th century, and made a significant contribution to the development of Buckland's views on the origin of extinct and extirpated fossil vertebrates. The report presents the first, albeit indirect, radiometric dates on the specimen, and argues that the animal fell into the cave just before 37,000 years BP, during the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 Interstadial (41 …

Muir Center Newsletters (1981-2015)

NEWSLETTER M Transcendentalist by L. Mikel Vause, Weber State University he term "transcendentalist" evokes an interesting image. Generally when one thinks of a transcendentalist, the image of a little brown-skinned mystic, sitting in lotus position chanting "ommm" comes to ihind. Although American transcendentalism certainly does have Far Eastern roots, one ascribing to that title is Br more likely to be found tramping around the back country rather than curled up on a mat contemplating the ilssence of existence. The founder of American transcendentalism is Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The Sage of Concord." It was Emerson who, with the publication of Nature …

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart Apr 2000

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart

Localités/Localities

The relationships between the wholes and parts of American history are vital to our understanding of ourselves as a nation and a people. Many of the central paradoxes and ambiguities of our national existence cannot be adequately understood without exploring the interplay between localism and nationalism that runs like a lietmotiv throughout American history. The influence of the westward movement in our nation’s past, the give and take of federal-state relations, the internecine sectionalism of the nineteenth century, and the more benign regionalism of the twentieth century raise important questions about the relationship between local history and national heritage, and …

Rural Towns As Partners In The Utilization Of Financial Credit: A Viable Option For Accelerated Development In Africa, Napoleon Bamfo Apr 2000

Rural Towns As Partners In The Utilization Of Financial Credit: A Viable Option For Accelerated Development In Africa, Napoleon Bamfo

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

One option of development that governments in Africa can pursue but which does not appear to have crossed their minds, is encouraging towns, represented as incorporated units, to borrow financial credit. There are several reasons why this appears to be a viable option of development. No government has the financial capacity to address the social and developmental needs of every town under its jurisdiction. A government that encourages or makes it easy for individual towns to utilize credit available from financial institutions, therefore, will be opening a hitherto underutilized component of development in the form of local savings and entrepreneurship …

The State And Economic Globalization: Any Implications For International Law?, Saskia Sassen Apr 2000

The State And Economic Globalization: Any Implications For International Law?, Saskia Sassen

Chicago Journal of International Law

States today confront a new geography of power.' The associated changes in the condition of the state are often described as an overall decline in the state's significance, especially the decline in its regulatory capacities. Economic globalization, for one, has brought with it strong pressures for the deregulation of a broad range of markets, economic sectors and national borders, and for the privatization of public sector firms and operations. But in my reading of the evidence, this new geography of power confronting states entails a far more differentiated process than notions of an overall decline in the significance of the …
