A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Esra Ozdenerol
A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Esra Ozdenerol
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Infant low birthweight rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is higher compared to the nation. Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in Louisiana. A few studies have indicated a relationship between the two health outcomes and their environment, but conclusions from these studies have not always been consistent. The spatial and temporal scales of the data and the methods used in these studies contribute to the inconsistent and uncertain results. The spatial patterns of infant low birthweight and cancer mortality in East Baton Rouge Parish from 1993 to 1996 and their relationships with environmental factors at three …

A Case Study In Amazonian Biogeography: Vocal And Dna -Sequence Variation In Hemitriccus Flycatchers., Mario Cohn-Haft
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ongoing debate about the evolutionary history of the Amazonian avifauna suffers from a shortage of data. Especially needed are thorough geographic sampling, sensitive markers of genetic diversity, and historical data in the form of explicit phylogenies. I examined patterns of geographic variation in three widespread species complexes of nearly identical Amazonian flycatchers in the genus Hemitriccus, based on spectrographic analysis of vocalizations and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences (1026 base pairs of cytochrome b from 44 individuals) from throughout Amazonia. Although members of the three complexes are extremely difficult to distinguish morphologically and have long been confused by taxonomists, they …
Molecular Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of The Tree Shrews (Tupaiidae)., Kwai Hin Han
Molecular Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of The Tree Shrews (Tupaiidae)., Kwai Hin Han
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examined the molecular systematics and historical biogeography of tree shrews (Tupaiidae). Comparison of cytochrome b sequences and DNA hybridization data suggests that cytochrome b sequences evolved 7.9 to 13.4 times faster than single-copy nuclear DNA. These two data sets are taxonomically congruent. They indicate that the Mindanao tupaiid Urogale everetti is a member of Tupaia, and that there is lineage-based variation in rates of evolution among the tupaiids. A new species of Tupaia from Sarawak (Malaysia), T. stuebingi, was described using morphological, ecological, and cytochrome b sequence data. This lowland species is generally similar in size to the …

Hydrodynamics, Bottom Boundary Layer Processes And Sediment Transport On The South-Central Louisiana Inner Shelf: The Influence Of Extratropical Storms And Bathymetric Modification., David Alton Pepper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The south-central Louisiana inner shelf has several distinctive characteristics that are not well accounted for by common hydrodynamic and sediment transport models, including a high-frequency wave regime, low fair-weather hydrodynamic energy levels, a coastal orientation parallel to most storm approaches, and a prominent submerged sand body (Ship Shoal). To address these unique considerations, inner-shelf processes were studied using three instrumentation systems deployed on the seaward and landward sides of the shoal between November, 1998 and January, 1999. These instruments were designed to measure hydrodynamic characteristics, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level, which were used to calculate bottom boundary layer parameters …
Quantifying Groundwater-Sapping Landforms With A Hypsometric Technique, W. Luo
Quantifying Groundwater-Sapping Landforms With A Hypsometric Technique, W. Luo
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
The groundwater-sapping process generates peculiar landform features, including amphitheater channel head, U-shaped cross section with steep wall and flat floor, and short stubby tributaries. However, previous attempts to quantify this landform were primarily limited to the planform geometry of the channel networks and the network topology. The elevation or relief information, which is more revealing of the processes that gave rise to the landform, has not received enough attention in the literature. The hypsometric curve (area-altitude relation) combined area and relief elegantly. By treating the hypsometric curve as a probability distribution, one can quantitatively distinguish small differences in the shape …
Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in the U.S. Louisiana mortality rates for all sites of cancer have exceeded national rates since 1950. Even though concern about the issues of environmental cancer is growing, conclusive results have not been reported. Previous studies differed in data source, data quality, time of observation, and statistical procedure, making comparison of results problematic. The spatial patterns of the most common cancer sites in Louisiana (from 1953 to 1993) and their relationships with environmental factors were investigated, using GIS software and statistical software. To provide a clear understanding of how the spatial …
Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung
Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

Interaction Between Cognitive Styles And Assessment Approaches., Mehtap Cakan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study investigated the interaction of cognitive style and assessment format (multiple-choice (MC) and performance-based assessments (PBA)) in second language proficiency. The participants consisted of 258 eighth-grade students. The second language achievement of the students was assessed by the Eighth Grade Proficiency/Credit Exam: French I. The cognitive style of the students was assessed by the Group Embedded Figures Test. The study also examined study habits and attitudes of field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) students toward the two assessment formats. The study utilized a sequential mixed-model design, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Phase I consisted of a quantitative …
Factors Influencing State And Nation Wetland Management: Building Effective Management Models., Megan Kinley Greiner La Peyre
Factors Influencing State And Nation Wetland Management: Building Effective Management Models., Megan Kinley Greiner La Peyre
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recognition that the interaction of people and nature is implicit in every environmental problem has increased over the last century. Yet, solutions to environmental problems are impeded by uncertainty concerning the importance of socioeconomic and political conditions in dealing with environmental issues. The development of interdisciplinary management models is necessary in order to address both the biological and social causes of environmental degradation. Protection of wetland systems varies among both nations and US. states. This variation provides a unique opportunity to explore the hypothesis that socioeconomic, political and environmental variables are critical influences on wetland protection. Structural equation modeling and …
A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind
A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Royal Court Theatre's current renovation invites a reexamination of the English Stage Company (ESC). The ESC has entered a crucible of change, raising new questions concerning the Royal Court's architectural semiotics and company's aesthetic mission as London's most acclaimed producer of new plays. This study seeks to understand the ways in which its identity has been shaped and consolidated over the last forty-two years and how the current chapter in ESC history redefines the company's identity and future achievement. The English Stage Company took over the Royal Court in early in 1956. The ESC's marriage with the theatre appears …
Farms, Their Environmental Harms, And Environmental Laws, J.B. Ruhl
Farms, Their Environmental Harms, And Environmental Laws, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Farms are one of the last uncharted frontiers of environmental regulation in the United States. Despite the substantial environmental harms they cause-habitat loss and degradation, soil erosion and sedimentation, water resources depletion, soil and water salinization, agrochemical releases, animal wastes, nonpoint source water pollution, and air pollution-environmental law has given them a virtual license to do so. When combined, the active and passive safe harbors farms enjoy in most environmental laws amount to an anti-law that finds no rational basis given the magnitude of harms farms cause. This paper comprehensively documents the environmental harms farms cause and the safe harbors …

Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Theses and Dissertations
In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression.
This thesis investigates Lange's photographs in order to gain a greater understanding of the …

This is a review essay based on Uday Singh Mehta, Liberalism and Empire: A study in Nineteenth-Century British Liberal Thought (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press 1999). It evaluates the entanglement of liberalism with colonialism to highlight many fundamental contradictions inherent in projects of modernity and the way universal claims are often bound by particularistic imperatives. Liberalism could reconcile its agenda of liberty and representation with colonial subjugation only by positing race as the grounds for eligibility to rights. With the project of neo-liberal restructuring of the world underway, it is useful to recall the disjunction between the theory and …
Confronting The Limits Of Gay Hate Crimes Activism: A Radical Critique, Dean Spade, Craig Willse
Confronting The Limits Of Gay Hate Crimes Activism: A Radical Critique, Dean Spade, Craig Willse
Faculty Articles
Questioning the emancipatory potential of hate crimes activism for sexual and gender non-normative people, this paper outlines the limits of criminal justice remedies to problems of gender, race, economic and sexual subordination. The first section considers some of the positive impacts of hate crimes activism, focusing on the benefits of legal "naming" for disenfranchised constituencies seeking political recognition. In the next section the authors outline the political shortcomings and troubling consequences of hate crimes activism. First, they examine how hate crimes activism is situated within a "mainstream gay agenda," a term they use to designate the set of projects prioritized …
Building Community In The Twenty-First Century: A Post-Integrationist Vision For The American Metropolis, Sheryll D. Cashin
Building Community In The Twenty-First Century: A Post-Integrationist Vision For The American Metropolis, Sheryll D. Cashin
Michigan Law Review
[T]he problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line. When W.E.B. DuBois wrote this prophetic statement at the dawn of the twentieth century, the American metropolis did not yet exist. Perhaps DuBois could not have predicted the sprawled, socioeconomically fragmented landscape that is so familiar to the majority of Americans who now live and work in metropolitan regions. But his prediction of a "color line" that would sear our consciousness and present the chief social struggle for the new century proved all too correct. As we contemplate the twenty-first century, Gerald Frug's book, City Making, makes clear …

Rethinking Relationship-Specific Investments: Subcontracting In The Japanese Automobile Industry, Yoshiro Miwa, J. Mark Ramseyer
Michigan Law Review
Longer ago than either of us cares to remember, one of us attended junior high in Tokyo. On Saturdays, he worked at a printed circuit factory. Or maybe "factory" makes it all sound too grand. A small building in back of a gas station, it had three or four punch presses. The "president" supervised matters (though he actually spent more time hanging out at the gas station), together with a sidekick who did assorted odd jobs besides. Several middle-aged women with no apparent technical education or skill ran the presses. The junior high kid spent his time trimming the sheets …

The Search For Constitutional Protection Of Labor Standards, 1924-1941: From Interstate Compacts To International Treaties, Edward C. Lorenz
Seattle University Law Review
Part II of this article will begin by reviewing the growing awareness before 1925 of the crisis in the New England textile industry and the emergence of John Winant as a concerned leader. Part III examines the early effort to confront the decline with new corporate and public policies. Part IV chronicles the pursuit of labor standards through interstate compacts and alternatives. Part V focuses upon joining the ILO and the questions that arose regarding the relationship of conventions to domestic law. Part VI describes the post-World War II attacks on the ILO which undermined, until the 1990s, the United …

Now I know how the Munchkins felt. Here I have been, toiling in the fields of Evidenceland for some years, laboring along with others to show how use of Bayesian probability theory can assist in the analysis and understanding of evidentiary problems.' In doing so, we have had to wage continuous battle against the Bayesioskeptics-the wicked witches who deny much value, even heuristic value, for probability theory in evidentiary analysis.2 Occasionally, I have longed for law-and-economics scholars to help work this field, which should be fertile ground for them.3 So imagine my delight when the virtual personification of law and …

School Life On The Mississippi: An Inquiry Into The Impact Of The Louisiana Reform Movement Related To Standards In World History Instruction In Three Secondary School Settings., Michael Joseph Schramm
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of standards on the instruction of world history in three secondary school settings. Contact with the Department of Education of the State of Louisiana found that the implementation of standards had only begun in 1997. After a grace period for implementation, the inaugural testing of the accountability system for these standards occurred in the spring of 2000. Therefore, this study became an exploratory investigation into the use of standards as they impact world history instruction. The first research question was designed to assist the researcher in exploring the influence that …
