This article presents a brief outline of caveats associated with the employment of fusarium oxysporum to eradicate coca and opium poppy production. These caveats are based on an analysis developed by Dr. Archie Dickey, an environmental biologist at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Arizona, USA.

Biogeochemistry And Contaminant Geochemistry Of Marine And Estuarine Sediments, New Haven, Connecticut (Usa), Michael A. Kruge, Gaboury Benoit
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The urbanized shore areas of Long Island Sound in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut (USA) have a long history of exposure to point and non-point sources of pollution, New Haven having been one of the birthplaces of the industrial revolution. As an unintended consequence of such activities, the region's sedimentary systems have incorporated a complex mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants. With its long and varied pollution history and the multiplicity of sedimentary environments (fluvial, estuarine, intertidal, marsh, etc.) present in a compact geographical area, the region is ideal natural laboratory for field testing new contamination assessment techniques. The …

Adaptive Response Of Scaphyglottis Acostaei (Orchidaceae) To Microhabitat Variability, November 2000, Andrew Fisher
Adaptive Response Of Scaphyglottis Acostaei (Orchidaceae) To Microhabitat Variability, November 2000, Andrew Fisher
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Orchids exhibit many adaptations, including pseudobulbs which store water and root velamen, which assists in water uptake, to deal with the harsh, water stressed conditions that are an integral part of epiphytic life. Within a single host tree the intensity of water stress varies between microhabitats caused by presence of moss and bark fissures to reduce evaporation of water, and positions that increase or decrease exposure to wind, precipitation and sun. The orchid, Scaphyglottis acostaei exhibits variable pseudobulb sizes and water holding potential of velamen, possibly as a result of different levels of water stress and water availability. In this …
Eco- Industrial Parks A Feasibility Study For San Francisco, Lemont Erick Adams
Eco- Industrial Parks A Feasibility Study For San Francisco, Lemont Erick Adams
Master's Projects
The this report addresses the feasibility of developing an Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) on the Pier 90-94 Baeklands site adjacent to the Bay View Hunters Point area of San Francisco. The Eco-Industrial Park concept is a new paradigm of Industrial Ecology, in which, an industrial system of planned materials and energy exchanges occurs, creating sustainable economic, ecological and social relationships. Communities like Hunters Point suffering from severe economic distress and Environmental Justice issues can potentially alleviate environmental and economic degradation through the development of an EIP. Eco- Industrial development fits with other existing economic development approaches planners currently use, such as …
Marine Planktonic Archaea Take Up Amino Acids, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman
Marine Planktonic Archaea Take Up Amino Acids, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Archaea are traditionally thought of as “extremophiles,” but recent studies have shown that marine planktonic Archaea make up a surprisingly large percentage of ocean midwater microbial communities, up to 60% of the total prokaryotes. However, the basic physiology and contribution of Archaea to community microbial activity remain unknown. We have studied Archaea from 200-m depths of the northwest Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean near California, measuring the archaeal activity under simulated natural conditions (8 to 17°C, dark and anaerobic) by means of a method called substrate tracking autoradiography fluorescence in situ hybridization (STARFISH) that simultaneously detects specific cell types …

Comparison Between Two Analytical Methods For Fecal Coliform Analysis In Natural Water: Membrane Filtration And Multiple Tube Fermentation, Mona M. Hafez
Theses & Honors Papers
This study compares two different analytical methods for the determination of coliform bacteria within natural waters. The two methods are: 1) membrane Filtration, and 2) multiple tube fermentation. Water samples from ten different locations within the Appomattox River watershed were collected by technicians from the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District and the Piedmont Region TMDL Initiative in Farmville, Virginia.
The Membrane filtration (MF) method utilizes m-FC broth to isolate and differentiate total fecal coliform bacteria (E.coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas) in natural water samples. A 1% dilution of each water sample is filtered through a 0.45 micron (um) Millipore filter …
