A Global Greenhouse Gas Monitor, Peter Teague, Stephen Russell
A Global Greenhouse Gas Monitor, Peter Teague, Stephen Russell
Small Satellite Conference
We present an advanced new sensor, the Greenhouse Gas Monitor (GGMTM), which will revolutionize the global measurement of greenhouse gas levels. The GGMTM is an ideal compact, passive instrument for deployment on future-generation small LEO satellites. The Kyoto summit on greenhouse gas and carbon emissions has demonstrated the urgent need for accurate, global monitoring of a range of greenhouse gases. Levels are currently estimated by making precise ground-based measurements at a few points around the world; coverage of the Earth’s surface can be vastly improved by making measurements from space along a closely spaced grid. We are developing an advanced …

Welcome to Mythcon XXXI, situated in the heart of Hawai'i's version of "The Cracks of Doom. " It comes complete with the grayness and the mists, the blasted earth, and a belly full of hot lava-a power even Gandalf couldn't control. But while Frodo a·nd Sam toiled we will celebrate, while their spirits dropped our spirits will rise, and while they were alone we will share together. The most powerful word in Hawai 'i is Aloha. It encompasses a generosity of spirit, and a love of the land, and people. This is what we hope you will find here. You …

Texas Gains On Naep: Points Of Light?, Gregory Camilli
Texas Gains On Naep: Points Of Light?, Gregory Camilli
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The 1992-1996 gain in mathematics scores on NAEP from 4th to 8th grades in Texas is placed in perspective. The "miracle" in Texas looks much like the median elsewhere. Of 35 states and two districts (Guam and D.C.), the 52-point gain of Texas was good enough to earn Texas a rank of 17th or about the 46th percentile. Taking into consideration the wealth of states, Texas stands in the middle of the pack - no worse than most other states in delivering educational services to students.

The investigation reported in here was prompted by discrepancies between the performance of Irish students on two international tests of science achievement: the Second International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP2) administered in 1991 and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) administered in 1995. While average science achievement for Irish 13-year-olds was reported to be at the low end of the distribution representing the 20 participating countries in IAEP2, it was around the middle of the distribution representing the 40 or so countries that participated in TIMSS at grades 7 and 8. An examination of the effect sizes associated …

Faculty Publications
Based on an exhibition for University of South Carolina students reading Michael Shaara's bestselling book The Killer Angels, this catalogue recounts the story of the battle of Gettysburg day by day, with an opening section introducing the major participants and a final section dealing with the commemoration of the battle and its treatment in later American literature. All the items in the exhibition are drawn from the Francis A. Lord Civil War Collection and the Robert S. Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Publications and Research
The transition from working in either a special library or corporate information center to an academic library requires some adjustments. The least adjustment is the change from chemical information specialist to chemistry librarian in a dedicated chemistry library primarily used by advanced chemistry students and chemistry faculty. Most librarians, however, must either serve in multidisciplinary science libraries, or become science specialists in single campus libraries. In such situations librarians may face new responsibilities. Generally, librarians teach more in academic libraries, often to novice library users. They may teach credit bearing chemical information courses. Some academic librarian positions carry faculty rank …

Hidden Power Drains: Trends In Residential Heating And Cooling Fan Watt Power Demand, Florida Solar Energy Center, John Proctor
Hidden Power Drains: Trends In Residential Heating And Cooling Fan Watt Power Demand, Florida Solar Energy Center, John Proctor
FSEC Energy Research Center®
This paper compiles power draw, air flow, and static pressure measurements of residential air handlers taken during nine separate field tests of space conditioning systems in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Canada. The field tests show that air handler devices do not meet basic performance standards and that the interactions between components combine to further degrade overall system efficiency. The findings support conclusions from previous research in Canada that called for a systems approach to improving air handler efficiency. This study reports that fan power consumption in U.S. air conditioners is about 40% higher than estimates used in the DOE …
The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney
The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
I summarize the recent history of education reform and statewide testing in Texas, which led to introduction of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in 1990-91. A variety of evidence in the late 1990s led a number of observers to conclude that the state of Texas had made near miraculous progress in reducing dropouts and increasing achievement. The passing scores on TAAS tests were arbitrary and discriminatory. Analyses comparing TAAS reading, writing and math scores with one another and with relevant high school grades raise doubts about the reliability and validity of TAAS scores. ...
