Two Units Of Instruction For The Spanish Language : Basic Vocabulary Development In Grades Four Through Seven, Megan Becker Jan 2000

Two Units Of Instruction For The Spanish Language : Basic Vocabulary Development In Grades Four Through Seven, Megan Becker

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research project was to develop two units of instruction for use with Spanish classes in grades four through seven. The research begins by exploring the different types of elementary and middle level foreign language programs. The research also investigates the different types of thematic units and what they should include. Finally, two units are developed for use in grades four through seven: a project-based unit built around Eric Carle's book, La Oruga Muy Hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), and a knowledge-based unit built around classroom vocabulary. Both units include a wide variety of activities that …

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding Jan 2000

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding

Graduate Research Papers

With the advent of research on multiple intelligences and individual differences, alternative methods of assessing individual strengths in content areas are needed. An integral part of the process of acquiring a second language involves these alternative methods of evaluating individual strengths. Portfolio assessment offers an alternative to conventional testing strategies for evaluating progress in second language learning. Portfolios provide meaningful methods to actively engage language students in the basic four modalities of literacy: listening, reading, speaking and writing a second language. Portfolios also can help promote and document the five standards of foreign language instruction: culture, communication, connection, comparisons and …

Parents And Literacy : The Importance Of Reading Aloud To Children, Phyllis A. Christiansen Jan 2000

Parents And Literacy : The Importance Of Reading Aloud To Children, Phyllis A. Christiansen

Graduate Research Papers

Parents are vital to their children's emerging literacy. Reading aloud to children offers parents opportunities to extend their child's knowledge about reading. A review of professional literature suggests that reading aloud provides children with reading role models, positive attitudes towards reading, a sense of story, improved listening abilities, exposure to different language patterns, concepts and related vocabulary, exposure to the rhythm and sound of language, book handling abilities, and knowledge about print format.

The Take Me Home project provides parents with access to quality literature and related activities to enhance the family's read aloud experience. Packets have been developed with …

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch Jan 2000

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch

Graduate Research Papers

Computers and the Internet have changed the way small town America operates. The infusion of technology has allowed rural areas to be competitive with residents in urban areas in education, business, and personal fulfillment. Computerized systems have made the workplace more efficient and effective. The Internet connects rural areas to the rest of the country, even the world. Just because a small town atmosphere appears to be in a different era with its quiet streets and friendly people, this does not necessarily indicate that the small town has not kept up with the technology era. A small town can have …

Book Talk In A Thematic Literature Unit, Cathy E. Dickerson Jan 2000

Book Talk In A Thematic Literature Unit, Cathy E. Dickerson

Graduate Research Papers

Discussions of literature may be viewed as a part of the social environment in which students can work together collaboratively to construct meaning. Book talk, or discussion, in a thematic unit encourages students to focus attention on the important ideas in their literature experiences, thus moving them beyond literal comprehension to inferential thinking.

The theme of survival was chosen to promote book talk. A web was created that visually mapped the different aspects of the topic. The book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, was chosen to introduce the unit and was read aloud to all children. This book became a foil …

Oral History In A Kindergarten Classroom, Marilyn J. Shanks Jan 2000

Oral History In A Kindergarten Classroom, Marilyn J. Shanks

Graduate Research Papers

Oral history offers elementary teachers an exciting way to get students actively involved. It allows them to deal directly with people and places in the real world. It involves students in the decision-making process and allows them to feel ownership in a part of history. Oral history combines process and product into a real-life experience. It is an excellent teaching tool that fosters excitement about heritage, tradition, and family and helps promote respect and appreciation for the older generation.

The Supreme Court Of Canada's Tax Jurisprudence: What's Wrong With The Rule Of Law, Lisa Philipps Jan 2000

The Supreme Court Of Canada's Tax Jurisprudence: What's Wrong With The Rule Of Law, Lisa Philipps

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper reviews the history of the Supreme Court's tax jurisprudence focussing on the Court's ongoing struggle to define its proper institutional role in the creation and interpretation of the tax laws. An emprical overview is first presented to document the changing nature and volume of the Court's taxation caseload through history, and this is related to the evolution of Canada's fiscal system. Selected judgments from differing periods are then examined to illuminate how the Court has conceived its role in the adjudication of tax issues. The author suggests that tax decisions have been strongly informed by a classical liberal …

Sovereignty On The Northern Plains: Indian, European, American And Canadian Claims, Kent Mcneil Jan 2000

Sovereignty On The Northern Plains: Indian, European, American And Canadian Claims, Kent Mcneil

Articles & Book Chapters

The Colonization of North America by Europeans raised fundamental issues about the status and rights of the original inhabitants of this continent. Were the Indian and Inuit peoples sovereign nations, with territorial rights equivalent to those of the European sovereigns in the so-called Old World? Did they have rights to the soil on a par with those of landowners in Britain, France, or Spain? If they were sovereign nations with territorial or land rights, what impact did European colonization have on them? Even today, these questions have not been completely resolved. In Canada, for example, as recently as 1997 the …

Mothers, Other Mothers, And Others, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 2000

Mothers, Other Mothers, And Others, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

My title derives its inspiration in part from the end-of-day watch sounded for my daughter by another child at her day-care centre when I arrived to pick her up:'. . . your mother's here-the other one.' As I think back to that moment more than half a decade ago, I remember with fondness the ease with which my daughter's little friends were able to assimilate that she didn't have a daddy, but rather two mommies-even the competitive little girl who said, 'Oh yeah, well I have about 10 mommies.'

Too, I recall a yet earlier conversation with one of my …

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella Jan 2000

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fifty students were randomly assigned to take a perception class either in a traditional lecture or in a distance-learning format in which the students attended class only to take tests. The results failed to suggest that the students in the distance-learning condition performed differently in the course than the lecture students. There were differences in what the distance-learning and the lecture students found useful and what they disliked about the course. These findings could be used to help design better distance-learning courses.

Limited By Law? Gender, Corporate Law And The Family Firm, Mary G. Condon Jan 2000

Limited By Law? Gender, Corporate Law And The Family Firm, Mary G. Condon

Articles & Book Chapters

The business enterprise is central to the operation of the Canadian capitalist economy in that it is a vehicle for the accumulation of profit, as well as a significant social location of employment. It is therefore one of the key mechanisms through which inter-class relations are mediated. A number of feminist scholars have pointed out that those class relations cannot be understood in isolation from gender relations. As Folbre and Hartmann (1988: 192) note disparagingly, 'the rhetoric of class interest simply subsumes the possibility of gender interests .' In their historical study of the English middle class between 1780 and …

Does Activity Choice Matter? The Relation Between Activity Choice And Adolescent Emotional Wll-Being, A. M. Schubbe Jan 2000

Does Activity Choice Matter? The Relation Between Activity Choice And Adolescent Emotional Wll-Being, A. M. Schubbe

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While involvement in activities generally enhances academic achievement and psychological health in adolescents, it can also have negative affects on certain groups of students. This study examines the relations between adolescents' activity choices (math, English, sports, and music) and emotional well-being indicators (happiness, anxiety, depression, resilience, and self-esteem). Specifically, the different activities adolescents believe they are best at are explored in relation to self-reported well being. In addition, the self-concept of ability in all four activities was assessed at the beginning and end of a four-year period. High self-concept of ability in any of these domains appears to be a …

Gary Karpinski - Aural Skills Acquisition, David Butler Jan 2000

Gary Karpinski - Aural Skills Acquisition, David Butler

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Gary Karpinski, Aural Skills Acquisition: The Development of Listening, Reading, and Performing Skills in College-Level Musicians. Oxford University Press, 2000. Reviewed by David Butler. The book makes an ironic first impression. When you pick it up initially, you can't help thinking that its massive title (truncated from this point on to Aural Skills Acquisition) seems misplaced on anoctavo-sized book, not quite two centimeters thick. But the title is much more appropriate than you first suspect.Aural Skills Acquisition is not just one more aural skills manual, filled to the edges with specimens for sight-singing and dictation. Rather, its focus is the …

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi Jan 2000

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Temperature, subgrade moisture content, and Falling Weight Defleetometer (FWD)-deflection data were collected monthly on four asphalt pavement test sections in Kansas for a year. The subgrade moduli were baekealeulated using the elastic layer theory. It was found that for almost all sites, the monthly variation in subgrade moisture content was not very significant over the seasons. The patterns of subgrade response, in terms of subgrade moduli versus time, simulated sine-shaped forms signifying a possible temperature effect. Higher variabilities across the site were associated with the extreme temperature conditions, usually very low or high average pavement temperatures. In all cases, the …

The Golden Fields Of Santo Domingo: A Historical Analysis Of America's Obsession With The Dominican Republic During The Nineteenth Century, Dennis W. Pennington Jan 2000

The Golden Fields Of Santo Domingo: A Historical Analysis Of America's Obsession With The Dominican Republic During The Nineteenth Century, Dennis W. Pennington

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In this work, the term "Santo Domingo" denotes one of three places: Santo Domingo City, the province of Santo Domingo, or the island country of Santo Domingo. Early history is the history of Santo Domingo City. In the seventeenth and early eighteenth century, the term also meant the provincial division ofland in the southeastern quadrant of the island that incorporated Santo Domingo City. When the Spanish were in control of most, if not all, of the island, the name Santo Domingo designated this kingdom. It not only included Santo Domingo City, the hub of activity in early Spanish American history, …

Postcolonial Theory And The United States: Race, Ethnicity, And Literature, A. Singh, Peter Schmidt Jan 2000

Postcolonial Theory And The United States: Race, Ethnicity, And Literature, A. Singh, Peter Schmidt

English Literature Faculty Works

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we may be in a "transnational" moment, increasingly aware of the ways in which local and national narratives, in literature and elsewhere, cannot be conceived apart from a radically new sense of shared human histories and global interdependence. To think transnationally about literature, history, and culture requires a study of the evolution of hybrid identities within nation-states and diasporic identities across national boundaries. Studies addressing issues of race, ethnicity, and empire in U.S. culture have provided some of the most innova-tive and controversial contributions to recent scholarship. "Postcolonial Theory and the United States: …

"Working" With The Ada's "Regarded As" Definition Of A Disability, Thomas Simmons Jan 2000

"Working" With The Ada's "Regarded As" Definition Of A Disability, Thomas Simmons

Faculty Publications

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination against and mandates accommodations for individuals with disabilities. As a threshold matter, the Act requires the plaintiff to demonstrate that she is an individual with a disability; that is, that she has an actual disability or is "regarded as" having a disability as the statute defines it. This article discusses the threshold "regarded as" showing as refined by three Supreme Court cases decided in the summer of 1999. Although in the past the "regarded as" definition has often played "second fiddle" to the "actual disability" definition, the author suggests that there …

Adolescent Girls' Livelihoods. Essential Questions, Essential Tools: A Report On A Workshop, Carey Meyers

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This report, co-published by the Population Council and the International Center for Research on Women, describes a workshop convened in Cairo in 1999 to learn more about the nature of both younger and older adolescents' work experience, differentiate the particular needs and potentials of adolescent girls, and identify programs and policies that might have promise for supporting them.
