Criminal incidents involving firearms in public areas that appeared to be random in nature [stranger to stranger violence] were gathered through an archive search of Nevada's largest newspaper servicing Clark County, the Las Vegas Review-Journal; Statistical analysis …

Evolution Of The Kingman Arch, Southern Nevada, Juliana Marie Herrington Jan 2000

Evolution Of The Kingman Arch, Southern Nevada, Juliana Marie Herrington

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Kingman Arch is a structurally high area in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona that lies partially within the Colorado River Extensional Corridor. Apatite fission track and 40Ar/39Ar thermochronological analyses were conducted for granite samples collected from a 4.5 kilometer thick Precambrian section in the central McCullough Range. 40Ar/ 39Ar data suggest slow cooling of the Kingman Arch between 1000 to about 560 Ma. Cessation of cooling is coincident with deposition of the Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone. Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata are absent on the Kingman Arch, but are present in areas adjacent to it. Thermal modeling suggests differential cooling of …

Two New Algorithms For Classical Problems In Computer Science, John Gerard Howe Jan 2000

Two New Algorithms For Classical Problems In Computer Science, John Gerard Howe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents two algorithms dealing with problems in two classic algorithm areas in computer science. The first algorithm presents a simple solution to the selection problem. The sequential computing model form of this selection algorithm is presented first followed by a general parallel computing model version; The second algorithm is a relatively simple bookkeeping approximation solution to the Steiner tree problem in graphs. The problem presented deals with determining the shortest tree connecting Steiner nodes in a graph that has no direct connections between the Steiner nodes. Both algorithms are described and analyzed in detail with an appropriate running …

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci Jan 2000

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In environmental applications dealing with data from contaminated sites the positively skewed lognormal distribution has been the most commonly used model. The upper confidence limit (UCL) of the arithmetic mean of a lognormal population is computed by using the H-statistics. Recent concerns have arisen to the effectiveness of the H-Statistic based UCL for the mean of the lognormal distribution in instances of moderately to highly skewed data sets. In this paper the positively skewed Gamma distribution is considered as an alternative to the lognormal distribution and is shown to produce more reasonable UCL's for the mean.

The Geology And Geochemistry Of Volcanic Rocks In The Lava Mountains, California: Implications For Miocene Development Of The Garlock Fault, Deborah L Keenan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Lava Mountains are located in the Mojave Desert, southern California along the Garlock Fault, a major continental strike-slip fault that separates the southwestern Basin and Range to the north from the Mojave block to the south. Chemical similar dacitic lava and pyroclastic flows erupted from the 9-km diameter Western Lava Mountains volcano. Dacites with limited chemical variability reflect interaction of mantle derived basalt with both metabasalt and graywacke of the Mesozoic Rand Schist and Cretaceous "Atolia-type" granitoids. Geophysical data suggests a low angle contact between these lithologies at a depth of about 20 km. This boundary may have served …

Progressive Transmission Of Digital Images, Joseph V Kraft Jan 2000

Progressive Transmission Of Digital Images, Joseph V Kraft

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

New high-resolution sensors produce very large data sets and associated images requiring large bandwidths or extended times to transmit. Other techniques have been proposed to compress and sort an image to send the most significant portions of the image first, allowing the user to choose the amount of compression applied based on transmission time; but they transmit the image as a whole; Many users are interested in only portions of the image. This case is better served by a transmission method with capabilities to browse the image at low resolution to first pick the portion of interest, followed by transmission …

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu Jan 2000

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is easily reduced under anaerobic conditions to harmless chloride (Cl-). In this system, the perchlorate-contaminated water is physically separated from the biofilm by the membrane. Perchlorate diffuses, without the need of external energy, to the degrading biofilm, thereby minimizing the contamination of the product water by microbes. A mixed microbial culture capable biologically of reducing perchlorate was enriched and attached to the membrane surface. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. In …

Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering Measurements Of Hyperpolarizabilities For Tetrahedral Molecules, Robby D Pyatt Jan 2000

Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering Measurements Of Hyperpolarizabilities For Tetrahedral Molecules, Robby D Pyatt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

First hyperpolarizabilities beta of carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrafluoride, deuterated methane, and methane have been measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering in gas and liquid phases. The gas-phase results for the coefficient beta xyz (atomic units) are 11.0 +/- 0.9 (CC14), 5.4 +/- 0.4 (CF4), 7.0 +/- 0.6 (CD4), 7.1 +/- 0.7 (CH4). Ab initio calculations are consistent with the measured values for CCl4 and CF4. A discrepancy between theory and experiment remains for CH 4, and is likely due to higher-order vibrational effects not accounted for in calculations. While the effective, liquid-phase beta for CCl 4 is 200% higher than in the …

Cobalt Silicide Characterization, Donovan Alldredge Jan 2000

Cobalt Silicide Characterization, Donovan Alldredge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Decreasing feature sizes of advanced ULSI (Ultra large-scale integrated) devices are driven by a desire for improve device performance and an increase in the number of devices on a single wafer. Small feature sizes cause increased resistance, which leads to degraded device performances. Silicides can reduce sheet resistance on poly-silicon lines and shallow junctions. The mostly widely accepted silicide process, Titanium Silicide (TiSi2), was adopted because of its low resistivity. Major limitations of TiSi2 include an inability to form on narrow poly-lines and gate shorting. Cobalt silicide is an alternative to TiSi2 due to its scalability (down to 0.065 mum …

Participatory Resources And African American Voter Turnout: A Comparative Analysis Of The 1992 And 1996 Presidential Elections, Wesley Lavelle Barton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines differences between African American and White political participation. Drawing from the theoretical assumptions of pluralism and structural functionalism, the thesis conceptualizes that voter turnout can be evaluated by comparing socioeconomic, socioreligious, and political variables. In analyzing data from the 1992 and 1996 National Election Studies, the thesis reveals that Whites disproportionately have a higher rate of voter turnout as compared to African Americans. The data further suggest that socioreligious variables, such as church attendance, are powerful explanatory variables for encouraging voter participation by African Americans.
