United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams Jan 2000

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When the environmental movement began to surge in the 1960s, concerns were raised over the prospects of the U.S. population growing to an unsustainable level and causing irreparable harm to the environment and our quality of life. Unfortunately, population growth has not been given the priority it deserves not because it is not an important issue, but because of our failure to view population growth, and all environmental issues, from a biocentric outlook. It is this paradigm shift towards biocentrism that we as moral agents should be making and which will subsequently cause us to view population growth in a …

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin Jan 2000

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

How does language structure patriarchy? How are gendered language and creation story imagery evidenced in contemporary debates on gay marriage? Helene Cixous suggests that Western thought is organized around binary, hierarchical oppositions---the most fundamental of which are male over female and masculine over feminine. Language and its connections to psychological and her/historical origins are central to her work. Cixous suggests that the separation of male and female, masculine and feminine, result in a war of sexual difference. I explore these themes with a feminist deconstruction of Internet sites in support of and against gay marriage. I then utilize Cixous's feminine …

Petrogenetic Study Of The Porcupine Lake Mafic Intrusive Complex, Trinity Terrane, Northern California, Edward Robert Muller Jan 2000

Petrogenetic Study Of The Porcupine Lake Mafic Intrusive Complex, Trinity Terrane, Northern California, Edward Robert Muller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Early Devonian (404 +/- 3 Ma) Porcupine Lake mafic intrusive complex of the Trinity terrane consists primarily of ultramafic-mafic plutonic and dike lithologies. The plutonic rock forms steep intrusive contacts with adjacent Ordovician peridotite, and consists of basal layered peridotite, cumulate clinopyroxenite, and isotropic gabbro. East-west trending mafic-to-felsic aphanitic dikes intrude the plutonic rocks, with high dike concentrations (>80%) in the southern portion of the complex; Gabbro and mafic dikes display subduction-related enrichment of light-ion lithophile elements and high degrees of depletion of high-field strength elements (Nb, Ta ≅ 0.1 NMORB). Trace element mixing models indicate gabbro and …

Evidence Of The Chumash Plank Canoe At Ca-Sba52, Santa Barbara County, California, Suzan Faye Rose

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Chumash plank canoe or tomol, was an important part of the maritime subsistence pattern of the Chumash as well as an important element in the maintenance of a complex heirarchical socio-political structure. The placement in time of the origin of the tomol is critical to many models of culture change and cultural ecology in the Santa Barbara Channel area. The assemblage of artifacts and features at CA-SBa-52 on the Goleta Slough adds to the body of data regarding the development of the tomol and indicates that it may have had a longer history in the area than previously suspected.

Heat Shock Protein 27 Inhibition Of The Caspase Cascade In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Lewis Joe Stafford Jan 2000

Heat Shock Protein 27 Inhibition Of The Caspase Cascade In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Lewis Joe Stafford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cells may die via a programmed cell death called apoptosis. Apoptosis can be triggered by many death signals, some of which cause cytochrome c to be released from the mitochondria initiating the caspase cascade. When there is an over-expression of Heat Shock Protein 27 (HSP27), the cell does not obey the death signals that it receives. In this study, the molecular mechanism for the HSP 27 inhibition of the caspase cascade is described in human breast cancer cells that were engineered to constitutively express HSP 27. HSP 27 directly bound to cytochrome c and inhibited the activation of caspase 9 …

The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine the relationships between selected variables, derived from Pender's revised Health Promotion Model (1996), and the degree to which they explain advanced practice nurses' current practice of health-promoting behaviors from a random sample of APN's (N = 357). The random sample was obtained from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. The study also described the relationship between these behaviors …

Bioinformatic Analysis: Retroposon Sequences Containing Multiple Putative Endonucleases, Seanna Kathleen Corro Jan 2000

Bioinformatic Analysis: Retroposon Sequences Containing Multiple Putative Endonucleases, Seanna Kathleen Corro

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Among the retroposons, the source of the endonuclease activity is known to be variable. We investigated whether any retroposon genomes encode potential multiple endonuclease functions. Amino acid alignments were generated to reveal the presence of the characterized ordered-series-of-motifs (OSM) that define four different endonuclease functions. These endonuclease functions include a retroviral-like integrase (IN), an apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE), the PDD endonuclease recently identified in the R2BM retroposon and an HNH endonuclease signature conserved by the group 11 intron sequences. The results indicate that the spliced l eader associated conserved sequences (SLACS) of T. brucei, c ruzi-associated retrotransposon (CZAR) of Trypanosoma cruzi, …

An Analysis Of Interconnection Network Effects Of Dynamic Element Matching Digital-To-Analog Converters, Hui Fu Jan 2000

An Analysis Of Interconnection Network Effects Of Dynamic Element Matching Digital-To-Analog Converters, Hui Fu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) convert digital signals into analog signals and thereby provide the link from digital systems to the analog world. Many DAC architectures use matched components to convert signals. However, practical DACs contain mismatched circuit components that cause nonlinear errors in the DAC's analog output signal. Dynamic Element Matching (DEM) is a method that can eliminate or reduce the effects of mismatch errors. In this thesis, DEM algorithms applied to a specific DEM DAC architecture that use several interconnection networks, including the Barrel Shifting network, the Generalized-Cube network, the Omega network and the Indirect Binary n-cube network, are mathematically …

Pedogenic Gypsum Of Southern New Mexico: Genesis, Morphology, And Stable Isotopic Signature, John Grant Van Hoesen Jan 2000

Pedogenic Gypsum Of Southern New Mexico: Genesis, Morphology, And Stable Isotopic Signature, John Grant Van Hoesen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent work in Canada and Iran (Dowuona et al., 1992 and Khademi et al., 1997a; 1997b) suggested a correlation exists between the delta18 O and deltaD ratios of the hydration water of pedogenic gypsum and the delta18O/deltaD ratios of meteoric water. However, a pedogenic origin for the sampled gypsum was not clearly supported and the results from this procedure were not compared to other paleoclimatic indicators. Therefore, the goals of this study were, (1) evaluate the genesis and soil morphology of pedogenic gypsum in and to semi-arid regions and (2) determine the applicability of pedogenic gypsum as a paleoclimatic indicator; …

Effects Of A 30-Minute Walk On Ground Reaction Forces During Walking With An External Load, Cheryl M Cardillo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate effects of a 30-minute walk on kinetics of walking with an external load, ten subjects performed five walking trials across a force platform for five conditions. Walking speed was 1.57m/s for all conditions. The first two conditions had subjects walk without (C1) and with (C2) backpack load. Subjects then walked on a treadmill at 1.57m/s for 30 minutes. At 10 minute intervals GRF data were collected. In comparing C1 and C2, dependent variables F1, F2, and Favg revealed increases of 10.45%, 13.68%, and 11.75% respectively (p < 0.01) indicating a mechanical response. No effect for time was observed for any variable tested. Therefore, the null hypothesis that load does not have an effect on vertical GRF was rejected. The null hypothesis that time does not have an effect on vertical GRF was not rejected. Overall, forces were elevated during load carrying, which may result in added stress on anatomical structures.

Since BGP has an impact on routing in the global Internet, the design and implementation of …

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen Jan 2000

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis seeks to explain how and why President Bill Clinton's 1993 attempt to drop the ban on homosexuals serving in the military was vehemently opposed by key stakeholders, even though empirical evidence strongly indicates that the ban is unwarranted and conflicts with America's democratic ethos; The theoretical framework for this paper is based on Roger Cobb and Charles Elder's writings on the political use of symbols. By manipulating cultural symbols, such as that of the masculine warrior, opponents of policy change forced Clinton into a compromise, the unsuccessful "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In torpedoing Clinton's effort, these antagonists …

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi Jan 2000

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary thesis of this study is that beginning with the pre-Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, American popular and institutional images of China focused on the reformist nature the government, but following the military crackdown in June 1989, this optimism dwindled and resulted in the creation of an ambivalent cross-cultural atmosphere toward the Chinese for the next half decade. When Chinese leaders decided to undertake military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in mid-1995, America's perception of the PRC swung even further in a distinctly negative direction; an event that marked the outset of a three year period during which Chinese …
