Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials
Many exciting things have been happening in the Women's Studies Office since I arrived on the third floor of Avery HalL I feel a little dizzy, but also quite exhilarated, by all the activities and projects we have underway. My transition into this challenging job has been made much easier by Glenda Moore, our program Secretary, by the energy and imagination of Graduate Assistants, Tagi Adams and Yeaji Shin, and by a hard-working Advisory Committee: Mary Beck, Barbara DiBernard, Carole Levin, Christin Mamiya, Adelaida Martinez, and Bobbi Shamburg.

Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael
Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael
Communication
Todd Gitlin’s work helped us to understand the tremendous barriers to left movements speaking freely through commercial media and the potentially destructive impacts of media imperatives on movements. Edward Morgan adds another warning: today’s organizers must overcome a media history of the 1960s that demonizes or trivializes the era’s struggles for justice. But must we also overcome some of our own thinking about how movements create change and their relationship to the media? Certainly, coverage of anti-Vietnam War organizing is one case study worth revisiting to recover an accurate past that can inform contemporary mobilizations. But there is also a …

Reading The Lives Of Others: The Winton Homes Library Project A Cultural Studies Analysis Of Critical Service Learning For Education, Matt Musucci, Adam Renner
Reading The Lives Of Others: The Winton Homes Library Project A Cultural Studies Analysis Of Critical Service Learning For Education, Matt Musucci, Adam Renner
Service Learning, General
This article examines the value and usefulness of expanding a particular approach to service learning in an educational setting. As a result of participating in a graduate seminar that combined cultural studies with service learning, reflecting on involvement in a service project, and a careful reading of relevant literature, the authors advocate for a more critical engagement with the reality of overwhelming social injustice. Moreover, the authors suggest a four-step framework (critical service learning), which is informed by both cultural studies and critical pedagogy. Finally, the authors argue for the adaptation of this framework into the school curriculum-thereby providing students …
