Searches For Neutral Higgs Bosons In Quark-Antiquark Tau-Antitau Final States Using The Opal Detector At Lep, James Andrew Hocker '91 Dec 2000

Searches For Neutral Higgs Bosons In Quark-Antiquark Tau-Antitau Final States Using The Opal Detector At Lep, James Andrew Hocker '91

Doctoral Dissertations

Searches for neutral Higgs bosons have been performed with the OPAL detector at LEP. Approximately 170 /pb of e+e- collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 189 GeV have been used to search for the SM process e+e- to HZ as well as for the processes e+e- to hZ and e+e- to hA which occur in extended Higgs theories. The searches are sensitive to final states containing quarks and tau leptons, for which an artificial neural network for the identification of tau leptons was designed. The results have been combined with OPAL searches for other final states to obtain a …

Development And Evaluation Of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite/Wood Railroad Crossties, Krit Laosiriphong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Railroad crossties are strengthened by wrapping glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRC). In addition, durability of crossties has been found to have enhanced by reinforcing them with GFRC wraps. In order to reduce the cost, GFRC wraps are not used to wrap the entire length of a crosstie, but only in the region that holds steel plates. The objective of this research is to select compatible adhesive between creosote treated wood and glass fabric, and study the performance of wrapped wooden crossties.;Five primer/resin combinations (Resorcinol Formaldehyde group) were screened for strength and durability of treated wood crossties. To evaluate stiffness and …

No significant group differences were observed on physiological measures to baseline one or during the snake …

Increasing Telephone Penetration Rates And Promoting Economic Development On Tribal Lands: A Proposal To Solve The Tribal And State Jurisdictional Problems, Jennifer L. King Dec 2000

Increasing Telephone Penetration Rates And Promoting Economic Development On Tribal Lands: A Proposal To Solve The Tribal And State Jurisdictional Problems, Jennifer L. King

Federal Communications Law Journal

Under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Congress instructed the FCC to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable telecommunications services. Consistent with that mandate, the FCC implemented a series of public hearings to discuss with tribes the issues they face concerning low telephone penetration rates. The FCC recommended investigation of universal service in unserved and underserved areas because telephone penetration rates among low-income consumers on tribal lands lagged behind rates in the rest of the country. From these hearings, the FCC proposed a jurisdictional framework to determine which eligible carriers would be under tribal, state, or federal jurisdiction. This …

Collaborative Model And Algorithms For Supporting Real-Time Distribution Logistics Systems, Hoong Chuin Lau, Qi Zhang Liu Dec 2000

Collaborative Model And Algorithms For Supporting Real-Time Distribution Logistics Systems, Hoong Chuin Lau, Qi Zhang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a complex optimization problem that arises due to an emerging trend in distribution logistics. The problem involves the integration of an inventory management problem and the vehicle routing problem with time windows, both of which are known to be NP-hard. We describe a collaborative approach to solve this problem in real-time. The novelty of our approach lies in the tight algorithmic integration between two sub-problems, and suggests an elegant scheme to deal with other integrated optimization problems of the same nature. For first sub-problem, we will present two algorithms: a complete mathematical model integrating integer programming with constraint …

Final Report: Study Of Sympatric Moose And Elk In The Garnet Range Of Western Montana, 1997-2000, Milo Burcham, C. Les Marcum, Dave Mccleerey, Mike Thompson

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Elk (Cervus elaphus) have been a major consideration in forest management in the western United States. Other ungulate species that are sympatric with elk, such as Shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi), have often received less management consideration. We studied a moose population in the Garnet Mountains of west-central Montana from 1997 to 2000, to learn more about moose habitat preferences. At the same time, we capitalized on elk data collected in a portion of the moose study area from 1993,...1996, so that moose and elk habitat use could be o compared. Logistic regression was used to model moose and elk …

Sensitivity Of Species Habitat-Relationship Model Performance To Factors Of Scale, J. W. Karl, P. J. Heglund, E. O. Garton, J. M. Scott, N. M. Wright, Richard L. Hutto Dec 2000

Sensitivity Of Species Habitat-Relationship Model Performance To Factors Of Scale, J. W. Karl, P. J. Heglund, E. O. Garton, J. M. Scott, N. M. Wright, Richard L. Hutto

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Researchers have come to different conclusions about the usefulness of habitat-relationship models for predicting species presence or absence. This difference frequently stems from a failure to recognize the effects of spatial scales at which the models are applied. We examined the effects of model complexity, spatial data resolution, and scale of application on the performance of bird habitat relationship (BHR) models on the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area and on the Idaho portion of the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Region. We constructed and tested BHR models for 60 bird species detected on the study areas. The models varied by three …

The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer Dec 2000

The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting and compare them to the age of the thick-disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best-fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ± 1.0 Gyr. The solar-metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin-disk age, 7.5 ± 0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -0.22) field stars whose kinematic and orbital parameters indicate that they are members of the thin disk were found to have an age of 9.7 ± 0.6 Gyr. The age for 47 Tuc was …

A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Esra Qzdenerol Dec 2000

A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Esra Qzdenerol

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Infant low birthweight rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is higher compared to the nation. Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in Louisiana. A few studies have indicated a relationship between the two health outcomes and their environment, but conclusions from these studies have not always been consistent. The spatial and temporal scales of the data and the methods used in these studies contribute to the inconsistent and uncertain results. The spatial patterns of infant low birthweight and cancer mortality in East Baton Rouge Parish from 1993 to 1996 and their relationships with environmental factors at three …
