Dot Gain Variation (A Study Of The Effects Of Dot Gain Variation To Improve Digital Workflow For The Xeikon Dcp/32d Digital Printing System), Voraphot Vacheravothan Aug 2000

Dot Gain Variation (A Study Of The Effects Of Dot Gain Variation To Improve Digital Workflow For The Xeikon Dcp/32d Digital Printing System), Voraphot Vacheravothan

Theses

Xeikon is a digital printing system that sends digital files directly to the press, thus eliminating film and plate processing. Technically, Xeikon is a web-fed press using electrophotographic technology to create information that is trans ferred to the substrate. From a marketing perspective, it is one of the preferred choices for on-demand, variable-data, and short-run printing because it has been proven to be an economical process than traditional offset. In the current printing process, the digital file is prepared as a postscript file and transferred to the Xeikon server and Xeikon Raster Image Processor (RIP) respectively. The computer section at …

Adobe Acrobat Image Compression: An Investigation Into The Effects Of Compression In Acrobat 4.0 On Image Reproducibility For Digital Printing, Kelly Thornton

Theses

The aim of this project is to investigate each [digitally printed file] compression setting in Acrobat 4.0 Distiller by using and comparing the effects of each on a digitally printed file. The goal is to define the visual results these compressions will yield according to the components of a given file.

An Interactive, Graphical Typeface Identification System, Charles Iii Myers Aug 2000

An Interactive, Graphical Typeface Identification System, Charles Iii Myers

Theses

Most, if not all, published type identification books suffer from serious drawbacks which make them difficult to use by both typographic novices and professionals. Few effective computerized programs exist to simplify the identification of typefaces. The purpose of this project is to create an effective, visually attractive, interactive and easy-to-use model of a type identification system, which, if successful, will be fully developed. This is accomplished by combining the graphics and interactivity of the World Wide Web with the database management capabilities of modern database products. The user is given a series of "questions" regarding readily observable structural characteristics of …

Spectroscopy And Photometry Of Nearby Young Solar Analogs, Eric J. Gaidos, Gregory W. Henry, Stephen M. Henry Aug 2000

Spectroscopy And Photometry Of Nearby Young Solar Analogs, Eric J. Gaidos, Gregory W. Henry, Stephen M. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present new photometry and spectroscopy of 34 stars from a catalog of 38 nearby (d < 25 pc) G and K dwarfs selected as analogs to the early Sun. We report that the least active star in our sample is also slowly rotating and probably of solar age. Two other stars appear to be evolved objects that have recently acquired angular momentum. A fourth star may be a spectroscopic binary. Many of the other stars belong to previously identified common proper-motion groups. Space motions, lithium abundances, and Ca II emission of these stars suggest ages between 70 and 800 Myr.

Disruption Of Hyaluronan Synthase-2 Abrogates Normal Cardiac Morphogenesis And Hyaluronan-Mediated Transformation Of Epithelium To Mesenchyme, Todd D. Camenisch, Andrew P. Spicer, Tammy Brehm-Gibson, Jennifer Jennifer Biesterfeldt, Mary Lou Augustine, Anthony Calabro Jr., Steven Kubalak, Scott E. Klewer

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

We identified hyaluronan synthase-2 (Has2) as a likely source of hyaluronan (HA) during embryonic development, and we used gene targeting to study its function in vivo. Has2-/- embryos lack HA, exhibit severe cardiac and vascular abnormalities, and die during midgestation (E9.5-10). Heart explants from Has2-/- embryos lack the characteristic transformation of cardiac endothelial cells into mesenchyme, an essential developmental event that depends on receptor-mediated intracellular signaling. This defect is reproduced by expression of a dominant-negative Ras in wild-type heart explants, and is reversed in Has2-/- explants by gene rescue, by administering exogenous HA, or by expressing activated Ras. Conversely, transformation …

Mizmaze: The Labyrinth Of Lanugage, Dave Morice

Word Ways

This poem, dedicated to Ross Eckler, uses words that contain all 676 bigrams from AA to ZZ, one per word. The words with bigrams occur in alphabetic order as they are listed on pp. 65-68 of Making the Alphabet Dance. Another 676 words connect them. Each of the 26 stanzas contains the 26 bigram words beginning with the same letter. For instance, the first stanza has all the A-bigram words, from bazAAr to magAZine. The entire poem is both grammatically and bigrammatically correct.

The "Kiddie Cab" Industry Transformation In The 21st Century, Jason Wachs Aug 2000

The "Kiddie Cab" Industry Transformation In The 21st Century, Jason Wachs

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

A new niche business has increased in the United States from a handful of private van services in 1992 to almost 250 nationwide. Referred to by many as "kiddie cabs," these private business are more than buses, iii that, they will chauffeur children to after school activities, the dentist, school, and anywhere else that children need to go.

The Kiddie Cab industry must explicitly be separated from publicly owned and operated transportation services for children such as paratransit services, shuttles for specific programs such as the YMCA, and any other transportation services for children that are currently funded and operated …

Improving Oral Reading Performance: A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Reading Interventions, Allison Morris Aug 2000

Improving Oral Reading Performance: A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Reading Interventions, Allison Morris

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Reading can be considered as the most fundamental skill learned in a person's life. It lays the foundation for later success in academics, vocational pursuits, and life. Because of reading's importance in everyday life, the search for effective reading interventions for those experiencing reading difficulties is continual. A single-subjects design was used to examine the overall effect of two reading interventions, listening previewing and folding-in, on oral reading performance. Nine regular education third-grade students served as subjects in the present study. Results indicated that neither the listening previewing procedure nor the folding-in technique were particularly successful at improving oral reading …
