Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Planning And Automation, Jun Zhang, Jianzhong Ruan, Frank W. Liou Aug 2000

Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Planning And Automation, Jun Zhang, Jianzhong Ruan, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Planning (LAMPP) being developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The off-line planning recognizes difficult-to-build features from an STL file, selects optimal part orientation and building directions based on the skeleton information of the object geometry, and optimizes the sub-process sequences for deposition and machining. During the optimization of the subpart building processes, collaboration between the deposition process planner and the machining process planner is needed to check the deposition availability and machinability. As a result, tool paths for both the laser head and the machining head are automatically generated.

Inflation After Preheating, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde, Igor Tkachev Aug 2000

Inflation After Preheating, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde, Igor Tkachev

Physics: Faculty Publications

Preheating after inflation may lead to non-thermal phase transitions with symmetry restoration. These phase transitions may occur even if the total energy density of fluctuations produced during reheating is relatively small as compared with the vacuum energy in the state with restored symmetry. As a result, in some inflationary models one encounters a secondary, non-thermal stage of inflation due to symmetry restoration after preheating. We review the theory of non-thermal phase transitions and make a prediction about the expansion factor during the secondary inflationary stage. We then present the results of lattice simulations which verify these predictions, and discuss possible …

Stress Management For Teachers In Vocational Education And Training Sector, Gloria, Ching Wah Chan Aug 2000

Stress Management For Teachers In Vocational Education And Training Sector, Gloria, Ching Wah Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Much of the stress of teaching is related to problem behaviour in the classrooms. The most effective way of managing behavioural problems is to prevent them from arising, and to minimize their occurrence. The focus is the teacher's ability and willingness to create a successful learning situation appropriate to the student's needs. Essentially, stress can be a challenging, exciting stimulus to personal growth, whilst excessive stress can prove damaging to psychological and physical health because it often triggers emotional and physical strain that may be harmful. So, people are motivated to cope with stress. However, the reactions to stress and …

Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan Aug 2000

Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The performance indicator for training for open employment is on how successfully the trainee is being employed in a job. Other than providing the job skills required which was always the emphasis in the vocational training, there are other issues, equally important, that should be addressed to prepare the trainees to enter into the competitive open job market. Independent and social skills should be strengthened through programmed activities. Attention should also be paid to minimize the mismatch between skills training and job opportunities to the trainees. Based on the provision in the skills centres for the people with disabilities aiming …

A Perception Of The Software Process Model, Albert H. S. Scott Aug 2000

A Perception Of The Software Process Model, Albert H. S. Scott

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

A student's perception of a software development process model appears to be a series of milestones when documentation is produced to satisfy academic requirements. Certain academic and industrial practices may influence students to place more emphasis on the software product than the process model. The proposal presented is to establish a more structured approach to project supervision to ensure a student performs quality planning, which includes the identification of appropriate software product quality attributes. Such an approach may ensure that sufficient attention is given to the software development process model to ensure that desired software product quality attributes are achieved.

Transforming Educational Practice For A Transformed Employment Environment, Jeanne Dawson Aug 2000

Transforming Educational Practice For A Transformed Employment Environment, Jeanne Dawson

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Major transformations in the globalised management accounting profession have put pressure on accounting educators to produce ‘employment-ready’ graduates with a range of communication-related skills. Many past efforts to develop undergraduates’ communication skills have been compromised by curriculum designers’ reductive approach to ‘communication’ and the tendency to teach communication skills in isolation from or as an adjunct to the discourse of professional accounting rather than as an already integral element. This paper critiques two models for teaching communication skills within accounting programs, and then presents an alternative, ‘discursive’ model. It outlines features of this ‘discursive model’ through reference to a case …

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

In the United States, demonstration of a vocational education teacher’s ability to teach academics (reading, writing, math, etc.) is essential in many states. Vocational teachers need to show students’ learning gains within their content areas along with how they contribute to the teaching of academics. This session will present how to use a pre-post test system to document academic and content learning gains. Examples of academic skill documentation and teacher-made pre-post assessments will be shared.

Teaching Statistical Problem Solving In Vocational Education, Wing Kin, Ken Li Aug 2000

Teaching Statistical Problem Solving In Vocational Education, Wing Kin, Ken Li

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

As our society is moving towards information economy, vocational education programs should equip students with the skill able to search, use and analyse information. Although the rapid and continuous development of information technology can ease the computational burden of data analysis, statistical analysis of data is not a simple task that acquires statistical practitioners having specific knowledge and skills to deal with statistical problems. Education of statistical practitioners is specifically concerned with preparation for improving performance in applications of statistics in industries such as finance, manufacturing, etc.. This advocates learning problem solving skills which require practice in thinking about, implementing …
