Internet Protocol Version 6 And The Future Of Home Networking, Laurie Blumsack Jan 2000

Internet Protocol Version 6 And The Future Of Home Networking, Laurie Blumsack

Theses

Home networking will be more of a necessity in the future than it is today. The homes of the future will make our lives easier in many ways. As microprocessors become less expensive and require less power they will be implanted into many of the common household items used everyday. Appliances and components will evolve into smart devices that communicate with each other. Connecting these devices will become more important as devices incorporate new technologies. It will be necessary to build a network that can handle the needs of this type of computing environment. The home networks of the future …

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske Jan 2000

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske

Theses

This thesis discusses the current controversial issue of traditional classroom vs. distance learning approaches in higher education institutions using a case study in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT. The most important question addressed in the thesis is, "Are distance learning methods effective for addressing university-level learning goals?" (Kathleen Davey, 1999, p. 45). There are currently many disputes between educational researchers on this issue. The first four chapters cover details of the proposal stage as previously approved by the Thesis Committee. Chapter One briefly introduces this issue and several important terms used throughout the thesis (e.g., distance …

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer Jan 2000

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer

Theses

Finite amplitude sound propagation undergoes nonlinear distortion due to continuous path interaction with the propagation medium. This distortion tends to defocus the beam causing significant lateral and contrast resolution degradation. Fundamental understanding of this interaction requires development of computational models that accurately predict the nonlinear interaction - development of media-borne harmonics - as well as produce an ultrasound image - introduction of transducer effects, interface transitions, and innovative image processing to extract harmonics. Most computational models of ultrasound propagation assume axial symmetry for computational expediency. Two notable exceptions are the K-Z-K and NLP models. A new endto- end model, NUPROP, …

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero Jan 2000

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero

Theses

The goal of this research was to develop a new approach to solve the inverse problem of thermal remote sensing of the Earth. This problem falls under a large class of inverse problems that are ill-conditioned because there are many more unknowns than observations. The approach is based on a multivariate analysis technique known as Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). By collecting two ensembles of observations, it is possible to find the latent dimensionality where the data are maximally correlated. This produces a reduced and orthogonal space where the problem is not ill-conditioned. In this research, CCA was used to extract …

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar Jan 2000

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar

Theses

Statistics point to the fact that there is a nursing shortage. The number of people entering the field of nursing is declining and the number of nurses leaving the field is increasing. According to past studies, one of the reasons nurses are leaving the field is due to job dissatisfaction. This paper focuses on emergency room nurses at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester, New York. The causes of their job dissatisfaction are studied as well as the effect their dissatisfaction has on their nursing careers. The results of this study indicate that emergency department nurses at Strong do not want …

A Comparative Study Of The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers And Corrugated Board, Based On Different Corrugation Directions, Richard Curatalo Jan 2000

A Comparative Study Of The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers And Corrugated Board, Based On Different Corrugation Directions, Richard Curatalo

Theses

This study evaluates compression damage to corrugated shipping containers used in the small parcel delivery system. A client is experiencing an unacceptable level of end-to-end compression resistance during shipment through small parcel companies, while never experiencing any top-to-bottom compression damage. According to small parcel company workers, there is a need for more end-to-end compression strength in corrugated shipping containers. This study examines the effect of corrugation direction on corrugated shipping containers and corrugated board. Box compression testing (BCT) is performed on regular-slotted containers with different corrugation directions. Edgewise compression testing (ECT) is also used in comparing the compression strengths of …

Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni Jan 2000

Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni

Theses

Illusory correlation is the perception of an association between two uncorrected variables such as intersubtest scatter on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III) and the presence of a learning disability. This study assessed the extent to which school psychologists are influenced by this illusory correlation. Three independent variables were varied systematically. One variable was relevant to the diagnosis of a learning disability (a discrepancy between expected and actual levels of achievement on the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT)). Another was irrelevant to the diagnosis (intersubtest scatter on the WISC-III). The third independent variable was used as …

Design Of A Wristwatch Pda, Kun-Chi Wu Jan 2000

Design Of A Wristwatch Pda, Kun-Chi Wu

Theses

This thesis concerns the design of a Wrist Device for assisting a person in one's daily tasks. Wouldn't it be nice if we could fit all the communication and data management tools we ever needed on our wrist? I personally like the idea. It is not because I am a watch collector that I chose to design a wrist style PDA.1 I think to put a PDA on your wrist is not only a very cool idea, but also the best way of carrying a really personal device with you. Since we are already used to putting a watch on …

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann Jan 2000

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann

Journal of Dispute Resolution

I will seek to show in this article that professional legal mediators in fact use a variety of styles, and that they change their approach constantly during a single mediation, even within a single meeting with a disputant. I will argue that these stylistic changes are the norm rather than the exception in the mediation of civil legal disputes and that the use of evaluative techniques is also frequent, even among those mediators who favor a broad, facilitative approach. Finally, I will describe the contrasting styles that the filmed mediators used in the same dispute and argue that these variations …

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger Jan 2000

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In his thoughtful article on the future of ADR, Professor Frank Sander notes, "On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I think we've made amazing progress. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, ADR seems more like a grain of sand on the adversary system beach."' In the federal government, I believe things are somewhat better than that. Perhaps five days out of seven I am impressed with the progress of the government in implementing ADR, particularly in the last ten years, which I will describe below. The other two days, like Professor Sander, I become more discouraged as we run into one of …

Is Binding Arbitration A Form Of Adr: An Argument That The Term Adr Has Begun To Outlive Its Usefulness, Jean R. Sternlight Jan 2000

Is Binding Arbitration A Form Of Adr: An Argument That The Term Adr Has Begun To Outlive Its Usefulness, Jean R. Sternlight

Journal of Dispute Resolution

While the semantic question may be uninteresting, I suggest that it is useful to ask the normative question of how we should categorize binding arbitration.'7 Again, there may be no clear "right" answer. Nevertheless, addressing the question of the appropriate categorization of binding arbitration provides a good means for rethinking the nature of binding arbitration, what we mean by ADR, and how the variety of dispute resolution techniques typically grouped together as ADR relate to litigation. Artificially grouping these disparate processes together under the "ADR" umbrella is beginning to prove problematic. While we may continue to use the phrase in …

Search To Clarify An Elusive Standard: What Relationships Between Arbitrator And Party Demonstrate Evident Partiality - Anr Coal Co. V. Cogentrix Of North Carolina, Inc., The, Jennifer C. Bailey

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In Commonwealth Coatings Corp. v. Continental Casualty Co.,3 the Supreme Court adopted a standard to determine and define an arbitrator's evident partiality in arbitration proceedings. Lower courts have relied on the Court's treatment of the issue, but this reliance has proved problematic, and led to both federal and state courts adopting inconsistent standards of evident partiality. This Casenote will examine the problems of Commonwealth, its impact on the standards of arbitrator partiality over the past thirty years, its continuing influence on the recent Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in ANR Coal Co. v. Cogentrix of North Carolina, Inc., and …

Appeals From Arbitration Orders Under The Federal Arbitration Act: Pro-Arbitration Policy Clashes With The Right To Appeal Final Decisions - Randolph V. Green Tree Financial Corp., Sarah Baxter Jan 2000

Appeals From Arbitration Orders Under The Federal Arbitration Act: Pro-Arbitration Policy Clashes With The Right To Appeal Final Decisions - Randolph V. Green Tree Financial Corp., Sarah Baxter

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Some circuits have also taken the position that when a court rules on an arbitration order in an embedded proceeding and dismisses the remaining claims in the action, those decisions are also not final or appealable. Other circuits, however, have taken the view that when a court rules on an arbitration order and dismisses the remaining claims in an action, such a decision is final and appealable. A decision on an arbitration order in an independent action is a final decision. This Note explores the circuit split over the issue of whether orders compelling arbitration in embedded proceedings may be …

Role Of Federal Courts In Assisting International Arbitration - National Broadcasting Co. V. Bear Stearns & (And) Co., The, Thurston K. Cromwell

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This Note examines a Second Circuit decision that determined private, international arbitration proceedings do not qualify for the same discovery assistance as do foreign, governmental proceedings under 28 U.S.C. § 1782 ("§ 1782"). This Note will focus on the Second Circuit's controversial interpretation of § 1782 and its impact on the future of private, international arbitration.

The Influence Of Cultural Backgrounds On The Interpretations Of Literature Texts Used In The Esl Classroom, Barbara Jostrom Gates Jan 2000

The Influence Of Cultural Backgrounds On The Interpretations Of Literature Texts Used In The Esl Classroom, Barbara Jostrom Gates

Dissertations and Theses

This study was a detailed descriptive investigation into the different interpretations and perceptions that are evoked by readers of United States literature, based on their cultural backgrounds and experience. Grounded in research that advocates for the convergence of culture and literature in the language classroom and a research design based on reader-response theory, this study explored the responses of two groups of students from the University of Portland: international students, the majority of whom were English as a Second Language (ESL), and U.S. citizens, all of whom were native speakers of American English.

Through a reader-response style questionnaire modeled after …

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray Jan 2000

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray

Vanderbilt Law Review

The United States makes clear its reverence for education by demanding that its children attend school.' What is less clear, how- ever, is the nation's dedication to each student's constitutional rights. From the earliest days of the common law, public school students have lacked fundamental rights, even the right of liberty in its narrowest sense.' Although public students retain certain constitutional rights,' the public school system maintains an elevated power over its students." This power is like that of a parent,' including the duty to "inculcate the habits and manners of civility" into its students.' The public school's control over …

Hyperspectral Imaging For Bottom Type Classification And Water Depth Determination, Nikole L. Wilson Jan 2000

Hyperspectral Imaging For Bottom Type Classification And Water Depth Determination, Nikole L. Wilson

Theses

Many recreational, military, and commercial activities take place in shallow coastal waters; therefore, interest is high in characterizing these areas. A variety of methods have been employed to determine water depths and classify the bottom using remote sensing. This research proposes to apply Philpot's principal components algorithm for bathymetric mapping to a MISI hyperspectral image, whereas previously this approach has been used on synthetic data. A description of the principal components algorithm is presented along with an outline of how it was applied to airborne hyperspectral images. The algorithm takes advantage of the ability to implement a deep-water correction, and …

Rules For Research On Human Genetic Variation: Lessons From Iceland, George J. Annas Jan 2000

Rules For Research On Human Genetic Variation: Lessons From Iceland, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

Research on genetic variation aims to understand how genes function and requires the comparison of DNA samples from groups of individuals to identify variations that might have importance for health or disease. This work is easier if the samples are linked to accurate medical records and genealogic information. Iceland has medical records for all its citizens going back to World War I and detailed genealogic information going back even further. Because Iceland's small population (270,000) has long been isolated and homogeneous, it is thought by many to be an ideal place to search for disease-related genes. Journalists have cavalierly labeled …

Tobacco, The Food And Drug Administration, And Congress, Leonard H. Glantz, George J. Annas Jan 2000

Tobacco, The Food And Drug Administration, And Congress, Leonard H. Glantz, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

Smoking has been the number-one target of public health professionals in the United States for more than a decade because it is the leading cause of premature death. Nonetheless, no unified public health strategy has been developed. In 1995, with the strong endorsement of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. David Kessler, announced that the agency had jurisdiction over tobacco and would regulate cigarettes as “drug-delivery devices. The tobacco companies objected and sued the FDA, arguing that Congress had not given the FDA jurisdiction over their product. The …

The Man On The Moon, Immortality, And Other Millennial Myths: The Prospects And Perils Of Human Genetic Engineering, George J. Annas Jan 2000

The Man On The Moon, Immortality, And Other Millennial Myths: The Prospects And Perils Of Human Genetic Engineering, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

The year 2000 provides an opportunity to reflect and speculate on human life in the year 3000. We cannot know what human life will be like a thousand years from now, but we can and should think seriously about what we would like it to be. What is unique about human beings and about being human? What makes humans human? What qualities of the human species must we preserve to preserve humanity itself? What would a "better human" be like? If genetic engineering techniques work, are there human qualities we should try to temper, and ones we should try to …

The Logic Of Egalitarian Norms, Kenneth Simons Jan 2000

The Logic Of Egalitarian Norms, Kenneth Simons

Faculty Scholarship

"The Logic of Egalitarian Norms" was prompted by a recent article by Christopher J. Peters, "Equality Revisited," 110 Harv. L. Rev. 1210 (1997), arguing that the concept of equality is self-contradictory and sometimes leads to absurd results, such as the multiplication of wrongs or wasteful "leveling down" of social benefits. Peters' view is shared by other recent skeptical commentators who question the value of egalitarian norms or who worry that such norms are often misleading. The article defends egalitarian logic against such skepticism in a wide variety of legal domains.

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher Jan 2000

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court in Kyles v. Whitley affirmed the prosecutor's duty under Brady v. Maryland to disclose exculpatory evidence to the defense, even if the police have not revealed the evidence to the prosecutor. According to the Court, prosecutors are responsible for ensuring that police communicate relevant evidence to her office. How should prosecutors implement that responsibility? Both England and the United States require prosecutors to disclose exculpatory evidence known to the police, but they take radically different approaches to implementing the prosecutor's duty. The English have legislated a comprehensive regulatory framework for police record keeping and revelation of case …

In recent years, two women stood convicted of highly publicized major crimes in Massachusetts. Katherine Ann Power ("Power") was a fugitive who committed felony-murder in 1970. She led a life on the run as a fugitive until 1993 when she revealed her true identity and surrendered to authorities to face the consequences of her crimes. Louise Woodward ("Woodward"), an au pair originally from England, gained notoriety on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean when she was convicted of killing the baby entrusted to her care. Both women captured the attention of the national media for months and reportedly had opportunities …

Shaping Competition On The Internet: Who Owns Product And Pricing Information, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 2000

Shaping Competition On The Internet: Who Owns Product And Pricing Information, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

Historically, markets have almost always fallen short of satisfying the conditions for and providing consumers with the benefits of perfect competition. Certain characteristics of electronic markets, however, enhance the possibility that e-commercel will be conducted in an environment that comes closer to attaining the perfectly competitive ideal than that of most conventional markets.

Evaluating Mistakes In Intellectual Property Law: Configuring The System To Account For Imperfection, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 2000

Evaluating Mistakes In Intellectual Property Law: Configuring The System To Account For Imperfection, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

In this Essay, the author argues that in assessing the performance of the intellectual property laws, it is useful to conceive of intellectual property law as a system comprised of both interacting decision-makers and other sets of law. Those decisionmakers include Congress, the PTO, and courts, and the other relevant laws include antitrust and contract. The author reviews the major intellectual property statutes, illustrating ways in which different institutions may be situated to correct the errors of another and how antitrust and contract also can work to correct errors in the scope of protection. The Essay concludes by arguing that …

Recommendations For Durable Solutions For Palestinian Refugees: A Challenge To The Oslo Framework, Susan M. Akram, Terry Rempel

Faculty Scholarship

For more than five decades Palestinian refugees have been denied international protection. Some five million persons, comprising two-thirds of the Palestinian people, and nearly one-third of the global refugee population, have remained without a durable solution to their plight. More than half of all Palestinian refugees lack basic day-to-day protection, such as physical security, freedom of movement, and access to employment. Today, the Palestinian refugee problem is one of the largest and longest running refugee problems in the world.
