Exclusive electroproduction of ρ0 mesons has been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA in two Q2 ranges, 0.25 < Q2 < 0.85 GeV2 and 3 < Q2 < 30 GeV2. The low-Q2 data span the range 20 < W < 90 GeV; the high-Q2 data cover the 40 < W < 120 GeV interval. Both samples extend up to four-momentum transfers of |t| = 0.6 GeV2. The distribution in the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the ρ0 production plane shows a small but significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation, corresponding to the production of longitudinally polarised (i.e. helicity zero) ρ0 mesons from transverse photons. Measurements of the 15 combinations of spin-density matrix elements which completely define the angular distributions are presented and discussed.

The production of D*± (2010) mesons in deep inelastic scattering has been measured in the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. The decay channels D*+ → D0π+ (+c.c.), with D0 → K-π+ or D0 → K-π-π+π+, have been used to identify the D mesons. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 1 < Q2 < 600 GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7 is 8.31±0.31(stat.)+0.30-0.50 (syst.) nb in the kinematic region 1.5 < pT(D*±) < 15 GeV and \η(D*±)\ < 1.5. Differential cross sections are consistent with a next-to-leading-order perturbative-QCD calculation when using charm-fragmentation models which take into account the interaction of the charm quark with the proton remnant. The observed cross section is extrapolated to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±) in order to determine the charm contribution, Fcc̄2 (x, Q2), to the proton structure function. The ratio Fcc̄2/F2 rises from ≃10% at Q2 ≃ 1.8GeV2 to ≃30% at Q2 ≃130GeV2 for x values in the range 10-4 to 10-3.

Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic e+ p scattering have been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the current and target regions have also been measured. The data support predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2 and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. …

The e+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, dσ/dQ2 for Q2 between 200 and 60000 GeV2, and dσ/dx and dσ/dy for Q2 > 200 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The double-differential cross-section dσ/dQ2 falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV2. The double differential cross section d2σ/dxdQ2 has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks (ū and c̄) and quarks (d …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab Jan 2000

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …

Computer And Internet Adoption On Large U.S. Farms, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge Jan 2000

Computer And Internet Adoption On Large U.S. Farms, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The adoption of the personal computer and the Internet is studied within a sample of large U.S. farms. Factors such as age and education influence the adoption of both technologies. Likewise, strong relationships exist between the adoption of each technology and the sophistication of farm management and the complexity of the farm business. After controlling for computer adoption, the results suggest there remain several factors limiting Internet adoption. It appears that producers are unsure as to how the Internet can best be used to create value in their farm businesses.

Identifying The 'Aboutness' Of Highly Structured Expository Documents, N. Stuart Hawthorne Jan 2000

Identifying The 'Aboutness' Of Highly Structured Expository Documents, N. Stuart Hawthorne

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The increases in commercial documentation over the past 50 years and the permeation of computers into all areas of business has led to a major increase in the individual's reading load. This thesis proposes a method of writing procedural documentation to enable rapid appreciation of the 'aboutness' of such material, thus making the reading task more efficient. The method is derived from a document structure which is used as a basis for the development of rules to construct a hierarchy of in-text headings which encapsulates the 'aboutness' of the text. Reading efficiency is achieved through needing to only interpret the …

Shamanism And Alien Abductions : A Comparative Study, Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson Jan 2000

Shamanism And Alien Abductions : A Comparative Study, Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Some UFO researchers (ufologists) claim that being abducted by aliens can be compared with shamanic initiation experiences in traditional societies in that both types of experience may be similarly transformative, leading to a more spiritual or animistic world-view, a deep concern for the environment and the development of paranormal abilities such as healing. This qualitative study is designed to investigate the validity of such claims. The research aim is to see whether the experiences and subsequent world-view of eleven alien abductees (eight women and three men) from a local abduction support group are similar to those of the typical shaman …

Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, which taken separately, do not address this complex issue. In Australia little research has been done to compare the home environment and school experiences of children coming from Chinese-Australian and Anglo-Australian families even though the number …

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike Jan 2000

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike

Theses

There are several advantages to the incorporation of an adaptable wing on an aircraft. Among these are increased fuel efficiency, greater maneuverability, and an improved ability to negotiate adverse conditions. This thesis explores the concept of a mechanically supported adaptable wing, where the supports are in the form of virtual spars running lengthwise along a wing of uniform cross-section. With no cross-sectional support to the wing, the skin spanning the area between the virtual spars experiences a certain amount of deflection due to the various aerodynamic forces acting on the wing. This thesis develops a process for optimizing (minimizing) the …

Fine-Tuning Tasini: Privileges Of Electronic Distribution And Reproduction, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2000

Fine-Tuning Tasini: Privileges Of Electronic Distribution And Reproduction, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is arguably the soundest copyright court in the nation. In Tasini v. New York Times, it handled a challenge brought by a group of freelance writers against publishers and database proprietors. The controversy, now pending in the United States Supreme Court, has wide importance because it will determine what entitlements attach to a publisher who purchases a privilege to include a freelancer's story in the publisher's magazine or newspaper. Essentially, the issue is whether a publisher, who has not purchased the story's copyright and has not obtained an explicit …

When Fathers' Rights Are Mothers' Duties: The Failure Of Equal Protection In Miller V. Albright, Kristin Collins Jan 2000

When Fathers' Rights Are Mothers' Duties: The Failure Of Equal Protection In Miller V. Albright, Kristin Collins

Faculty Scholarship

The history of coverture and the transmission of American citizenship brings an elementary point into focus: The allocation of parental rights is always correlated with the allocation of parental responsibility. This basic legal truism, and its numerous implications for citizenship law, suggests that the principal gender injustice caused by § 1409 is not its truncation of fathers' rights, but its creation and perpetuation of a legal regime in which mothers assume full responsibility for foreign-born nonmarital children. Once we recognize this gendered operation of § 1409, broader failures of equal protection analysis come into relief. First, while the jurisprudential understanding …

Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen Jan 2000

Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen

Theses

Quantum Key Distribution is meant to be an ultimate computer security system that will not need upgrade/overhaul from time to time. QKD allows the generation of long key length on demand. QKD, coupled with the unconditional secure "one-time pad" encryption system, will be unbreakable for eavesdropper with infinite resources. Numerous experimental QKD prototypes have demonstrated that QKD is likely to be a reality before quantum computer. One of the steps in a Quantum Key Distribution protocol is to remove the transmission errors from quantum communication, which typically has a high error rate (one percent or higher). An interactive error control …
