A Glimpse At The Twentieth Century: Through Children's Eyes, Kelli M. Allen
A Glimpse At The Twentieth Century: Through Children's Eyes, Kelli M. Allen
Honors Capstones
Children's literature is an important part of every child's life. Through literature, a child is able to learn about distant lands and time periods and may experience a multitude of adventures. Unfortunately, authentic children's literature is not used in the classroom often enough. To demonstrate how effectively and easily children's literature can be incorporated into the elementary curriculum, I have created an interdisciplinary unit to be used in a sixth grade classroom. I have chosen six books which each represent one major historical event in the American Twentieth Century. After reading each book I have written a three to four …
Project Iris: Image Reconstruction Of The Iris Spectrally, Joseph Unander
Project Iris: Image Reconstruction Of The Iris Spectrally, Joseph Unander
Theses
The basic motivation behind this project is a highly accurate representation of the human iris, to be injected into a virtual model of the human eyeball. A highly accurate brightness level recording can be easily obtained with a high quality digital camera. Color, however, is an entirely different matter. Photography in the traditional sense entertains all sorts of color inaccuracies, mostly related to the chemical process of development. Digital photography presents gamma and metameric problems, since the exact conditions of the capturing event cannot easily be duplicated. However, the spectral radiance of an object can be captured, utilizing a spectrophotometer …

Outbreaks Of Enterovirus 71 Infection, Sazaly Abubakar, Y.F. Chan, S.K. Lam, M. Ho, J.R. Wang, S.R. Shih
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
The outbreak of enterovirus 71 infection in Taiwan, reported by Ho et al. (Sept. 23 issue), 1 occurred almost a year after the outbreak in Malaysia. Though both outbreaks occurred in Asia and both involved large numbers of deaths, it was not known whether the two outbreaks were related. We studied the nucleotide sequence and secondary RNA structure of some of the isolates, using the sequence of the 5' untranslated region (UTR). Enterovirus 71 isolates from patients in Singapore (seven isolates), Taiwan (two isolates), and Japan (one isolate) were examined and compared with those previously reported in Malaysia 2,3 or …

View-Centric Reasoning About Parallel And Distributed Computation, Marc L. Smith
View-Centric Reasoning About Parallel And Distributed Computation, Marc L. Smith
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The development of distributed applications has not progressed as rapidly as its enabling technologies. In part, this is due to the difficulty of reasoning about such complex systems. In contrast to sequential systems, parallel systems give rise to parallel events, and the resulting uncertainty of the observed order of these events. Loosely coupled distributed systems complicate this even further by introducing the element of multiple imperfect observers of these parallel events. The goal of this dissertation is to advance parallel and distributed systems development by producing a parameterized model that can be instantiated to reflect the computation and coordination properties …

Automatic Optical Matched Filtering An Evaluation Of Reflexite And Transitions Lenses In An Optical Matched Filtering Role, Timothy Hattenberger
Automatic Optical Matched Filtering An Evaluation Of Reflexite And Transitions Lenses In An Optical Matched Filtering Role, Timothy Hattenberger
Theses
A matched filter is a device used to detect the presence and position of known objects in a scene. The ability to create an optical matched filter has been around for many years. The current filters have some aspects that are troublesome. The problems encountered by these filters include quantization error, and complexity in generating the matched filters. The optical matched filter being studied eliminates these problems in an attempt to generate a better filter. There are also other potential implications of this research. One can envision such a system being used for real-time target detection. The primary advantage over …
Machine Tool Spindle Design, Jamie Hoyt
Machine Tool Spindle Design, Jamie Hoyt
Theses
In modern machine tool applications the performance of a machine tool is judged by its ability to produce work-pieces accurately and efficiently. The stiffness of the machine tool spindle has a profound impact on the overall machine performance. The work presented here provides a tool for machine tool spindle designers to develop spindles that are sufficiently stiff to meet their needs. The analysis presented here is divided into three main sections. The first portion is a static analysis. The static analysis calculates the lateral deflection of the spindle-bearing system. AMatlab program was developed that aiiows the user to enter the …
Optimization Of Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements Using The In-Cylinder Velocity Flow Fields In An Optical Engine, David Chmiel
Optimization Of Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements Using The In-Cylinder Velocity Flow Fields In An Optical Engine, David Chmiel
Theses
Research work was performed in cooperation with Delphi Automotive Systems to optimize Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements using the in-cylinder velocity flow fields in Delphi's optical engine. It entailed comprehending PIV theory, making a purchased PIV system work on Delphi's optical engine, investigation of PIV seeding techniques, applying PIV to steady-state liquid and air flow fields, calibrating/validating the PIV system operation, understanding the operation of Delphi's optical engine, performing optical engine velocity flow field measurements, comparing measurement results with Delphi's computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model, and optimizing the measurement technique for varying 2-D velocity flow fields. All the mentioned targets …

The First Bite Is Free: Employer Liability For Sexual Harassment, Joanna L. Grossman
The First Bite Is Free: Employer Liability For Sexual Harassment, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In June, 1998, the Supreme Court issued two decisions, Burlington Industries, Inc. v. Ellerth and Faragher v. City of Boca Raton that established new standards for employer liability for sexual harassment. Although the two cases presented different questions and factual predicates, the Court adopted a unified holding with respect to employer liability for supervisor harassment. Many commentators interpreted the new standards as a blow to employers based on the perception that employers would now be held accountable for workplace harassment without regard to their culpability.
The thesis of this article is that the conventional wisdom with respect to Faragher and …
Perception Vs. Reality.. What Do Athletes Really Eat And Why?, John Kralles
Perception Vs. Reality.. What Do Athletes Really Eat And Why?, John Kralles
Theses
This study demonstrated an inconsistency between perception and reality concerning the diet of today's amateur athlete as well as the reasons why this disparity may occur. Here, a gap opens between perception and reality. A review of current literature and case study sets the stage for parameters of judgment. This study also exhibits the forms of misinformation that amateur athletes utilize to construct tainted views on their dietary endeavor. This study established that the perceptions of the amateur athletes studied concerning their diet are skewed and the causation is the effect of poor hand me down information, illegitimate press and …
Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Theses
The purpose of this study was to gather and analyze information on lifecycle theories that may provide tourist destinations with a better understanding on how to have more control over their long-term sustainability. An extensive literature review was conducted that resulted in identifying and analyzing four applicable models and theories. As a result of this analysis, the researcher concluded that these four theories and models do not independently nor collectively offer a single, comprehensive working model for destinations to use in evaluating and monitoring their strategy for long term success. To help bridge this gap and point the way toward …
Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider
Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider
Book Chapters
Throughout most of American history no one would have supposed biomedical policy could or should be made through constitutional adjudication. No one would have thought that the Constitution spoke to biomedical issues, that those issues were questions of federal policy, or that judges were competent to handle them. Today, however, the resurgence of substantive due process has swollen the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment, the distinction between federal and state spheres is tattered, and few statutes escape judicial vetting. Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln's wish that the Constitution should "become the political religion of the nation" has been granted. "We now reverently …

Private Remedies For Public Wrongs Under Section 5 (Symposium: New Directions In Federalism), Evan H. Caminker
Private Remedies For Public Wrongs Under Section 5 (Symposium: New Directions In Federalism), Evan H. Caminker
Articles
The Supreme Court has ushered in the new millennium with a renewed emphasis on federalism-based limits to Congress's regulatory authority in general, and Congress's Section 5 power to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment in particular. In a recent string of cases, the Court has refined and narrowed Section 5's enforcement power in two significant ways.1 First, the Court made clear that Congress lacks the authority to interpret the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment's substantive provisions themselves, and may only "enforce" the judiciary's definition of Fourteenth Amendment violations. 2 Second, the Court embraced a relatively stringent requirement concerning the relationship between means …

Before making a few remarks in response to those who commented on our article (Lempert, Chambers, and Adams 2000), we would like to express our gratitude to the editors of Law and Social Inquiry for securing these commentaries and to the people who wrote them. The comments both highlight the potential uses to which our research and similar studies may be put and give us the opportunity to address methodological concerns and questions that other readers of our article may share with those who commented on it. The responses to our work are of two types. Professors Nelson, Payne, and …
Refugee Rights Are Not Negotiable, James C. Hathaway, Anne K. Cusick
Refugee Rights Are Not Negotiable, James C. Hathaway, Anne K. Cusick
Articles
America's troubled relationship with international law, in particular human rights law, is well documented. In many cases, the United States simply will not agree to be bound by international human rights treaties. For example, the United States has yet to ratify even such fundamental agreements as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. When the United States does agree to become a party to an international human rights treaty, it has often sought to condition its acceptance …

Sentimental Stereotypes: Emotional Expectations For High-And Low-Status Group Members, Larissa Z. Tiedens, Phoebe C. Ellsworth, Batja Mesquita
Articles
Three vignette studies examined stereotypes of the emotions associated with high- and low-status group members. In Study 1a, participants believed that in negative situations, high-status people feel more angry than sad or guilty and that low-status people feel more sad and guilty than angry. Study 1b showed that in response to positive outcomes, high-status people are expected to feel more pride and low-status people are expected to feel more appreciation. Study 2 showed that people also infer status from emotions: Angry and proud people are thought of as high status, whereas sad, guilty, and appreciative people are considered low status. …
