Implementation Of A Web-Based, Self-Scoring Version Of The Family Assessment Device (Fad) For Parent Education, Rick Peterson, Janet Prillaman

Journal of Extension

The article reports on the implementation of a Web-based, self-scoring version of the Family Assessment Device (FAD) in parent education for needs assessment and evaluation purposes. The FAD measures overall family functioning and six key areas of family functioning. Results of the analysis of each subscale indicated that participants increased their level of family functioning with respect to problem-solving, communication, affective involvement, affective responsiveness, roles, behavior control, and general functioning. Paired t-test results indicated that a statistically significant change occurred on five out of the seven measures. Implications of the application for needs assessment and outcome purposes are discussed.

Assessment Technology: Its Use In Improving Leadership And Management Performance, Gail J. Gunderson, Bill R. Haynes

Journal of Extension

Assessment centers are one of the most effective selection, promotional, and training tools ever developed. Many organizations use them today, including a large percentage of Fortune 500 corporations and federal, state, and local government agencies. Assessment centers offer immediate and targeted application supporting leadership, assessment, and development for managers. Both participants and practitioners value assessment centers for their content validity, predictive accuracy, objectivity, and relevance to the job. Ohio State University Extension is successfully using assessment centers to identify and evaluate the supervisory, managerial, and leadership capabilities of its professional staff.

The World Trade Constitution, John O. Mcginnis, Mark L. Movsesian Dec 2000

The World Trade Constitution, John O. Mcginnis, Mark L. Movsesian

Articles

Conventional wisdom holds that the World Trade Organization (WTO) necessarily poses a threat to sovereignty and representative government within its member nations. Professors McGinnis and Movsesian refute this view. They argue that the WTO can be understood as a constitutive structure that, by reducing the power of protectionist interest groups, can simultaneously promote international trade and domestic democracy. Indeed, in promoting both free trade and accountable government, the WTO reflects many of the insights that inform our own Madisonian Constitution. Professors McGinnis and Movsesian reject recent proposals to grant the WTO regulatory authority, endorsing instead the WTO's limited adjudicative power …

Evolutionary Psychology, Meet Developmental Neurobiology: Against Promiscuous Modularity, David J. Buller, Valerie Gray Hardcastle Dec 2000

Evolutionary Psychology, Meet Developmental Neurobiology: Against Promiscuous Modularity, David J. Buller, Valerie Gray Hardcastle

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Evolutionary psychologists claim that the mind contains “hundreds or thousands” of “genetically specified” modules, which are evolutionary adaptations for their cognitive functions. We argue that, while the adult human mind/brain typically contains a degree of modularization, its “modules” are neither genetically specified nor evolutionary adaptations. Rather, they result from the brain's developmental plasticity, which allows environmental task demands a large role in shaping the brain's information-processing structures. The brain's developmental plasticity is our fundamental psychological adaptation, and the “modules” that result from it are adaptive responses to local conditions, not past evolutionary environments. If different individuals share common environments, however, …

The Role Of Audiology Technicians In The Va System, John Terry Berardino Dec 2000

The Role Of Audiology Technicians In The Va System, John Terry Berardino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eligibility reform in the VA and the resulting increased caseloads have brought about unacceptable wait times for new audiology appointments. Mandates to decrease wait times without increased resources have brought new demands on audiology clinics. One proposed solution is the addition of audiology technicians to VA audiology clinic practice.

The first purpose of this study was to survey the attitudes of VA audiologists and service chiefs regarding the use of technicians. The second purpose was to ask the survey respondents to assign as generally appropriate or inappropriate, job duties which might be accomplished by an audiology technician. Following a pre-survey …

Microbial Biofilms: From Ecology To Molecular Genetics, Mary Ellen Davey, George A. O'Toole Dec 2000

Microbial Biofilms: From Ecology To Molecular Genetics, Mary Ellen Davey, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces or associated with interfaces. Despite the focus of modern microbiology research on pure culture, planktonic (free-swimming) bacteria, it is now widely recognized that most bacteria found in natural, clinical, and industrial settings persist in association with surfaces. Furthermore, these microbial communities are often composed of multiple species that interact with each other and their environment. The determination of biofilm architecture, particularly the spatial arrangement of microcolonies (clusters of cells) relative to one another, has profound implications for the function of these complex communities. Numerous new experimental approaches and methodologies have been …

Control Challenges In Multi-Level Adaptive Video Streaming, Dylan Mcnamee, Charles Krasic, Kang Li, Ashvin Goel, Erik Walthinsen, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Streaming video is one of the fastest-growing applications of the Internet. The Internet’s diversity and dynamism demands that video streams adapt to ensure maximum quality at all times. This paper describes the control challenges we have encountered in the Quasar project’s “multi-level” adaptive streaming video player. We first describe the framework and environment of the player. This framework uses software feedback to control resource allocation as well as the quality of media delivery. We present the control challenges raised by our framework, which include horizontal and vertical feedback composition, difficult to model systems, and unpredictable, non-linear actuators. We describe some …

The Educational Needs Of Small Business Owners: A Look Into The Future, Glenn Muske, Nancy Stanforth Dec 2000

The Educational Needs Of Small Business Owners: A Look Into The Future, Glenn Muske, Nancy Stanforth

Journal of Extension

A significant growth element in the U.S. economic expansion has been small businesses. Continued growth will depend on that trend continuing. Many of the future owners are today's college students. This article reports on a study examining the entrepreneurial plans of students. The study found significant numbers of students anticipate starting their own business. The students indicated that they would use future nonformal educational programs to help them start and run the business. Cooperative Extension has played a significant educational role in helping business owners be successful. This article suggests that the demand for such help will remain strong in …

Developing A Farm Newsletter For Better Communications Between Tenant And Landowner, Joe Parcell, J Bob Wells Dec 2000

Developing A Farm Newsletter For Better Communications Between Tenant And Landowner, Joe Parcell, J Bob Wells

Journal of Extension

It is not uncommon for a tenant seldom to have contact with the landowner outside of the customary rental settlement. Agriculture is an evolving industry that has had to deal with technological adoption and the realization of the term "economies of size" during the past 10 years. A combination of increased competition for land to benefit from economies of size and more landowners not understanding production agriculture technology adoption has caused communications between tenants and landowners to become crucial. One method Extension farm management specialists can recommend to improve communications between tenants and landowners is for the tenant to develop …

Java On Networks Of Workstations (Javanow): A Parallel Computing Framework Inspired By Linda And The Message Passing Interface (Mpi), George K. Thiruvathukal, Phil M. Dickens, Shahzad Bhatti

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Networks of workstations are a dominant force in the distributed computing arena, due primarily to the excellent price/performance ratio of such systems when compared to traditionally massively parallel architectures. It is therefore critical to develop programming languages and environments that can help harness the raw computational power available on these systems. In this article, we present JavaNOW (Java on Networks of Workstations), a Java‐based framework for parallel programming on networks of workstations. It creates a virtual parallel machine similar to the MPI (Message Passing Interface) model, and provides distributed associative shared memory similar to the Linda memory model but with …
