Conceptions Of Learning Identified By Indigenous Students Entering A University Preparation Course, Alison M. Bunker Jan 2000

Conceptions Of Learning Identified By Indigenous Students Entering A University Preparation Course, Alison M. Bunker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The increase in Indigenous participation in university courses in recent years has not been matched by an increase in graduation. In the mainstream university population, student success has been linked to approaches to learning, which are linked to conceptions of learning. This study investigates what conceptions of learning Indigenous students identify at the beginning of their university career. Thirty six students completed a 'Reflections on Learning Inventory' developed by Meyer (1995). Nine of these students were interviewed in depth about what they thought learning was and how they would go about it. The interview analysis for each of the nine …

Developing A Post Compulsory Evidence-Based Alcohol Education Curriculum That Is Relevant To Students And Acceptable To Teachers, Fiona Farringdon Jan 2000

Developing A Post Compulsory Evidence-Based Alcohol Education Curriculum That Is Relevant To Students And Acceptable To Teachers, Fiona Farringdon

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of this study was to develop a post compulsory, alcohol education curriculum that would be perceived as relevant by students and acceptable to teachers. The study had its conceptual basis in harm minimisation that has considerable justification in terms of what school-based alcohol education can realistically achieve. A harm minimisation approach is supported by parental attitudes, teachers, young people and government policy. To ensure the curriculum was developed in the Western Australian education context it has been linked to the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and adheres to the principles that underpin the framework. Furthermore, this study draws on …

Origin And Fate Of Organic Matter In South-West Australian Wetlands, Darren Stuart Ryder Jan 2000

Origin And Fate Of Organic Matter In South-West Australian Wetlands, Darren Stuart Ryder

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development and local distribution of organic soils in Australia have been poorly documented. Within Western Australia, conditions conducive to the accumulation of organic matter are geographically restricted and generally occur in coastal and/or forested landscapes. An extensive system of wetlands with peal soils occurs in the Muir-Unicup region in the far south west of Western Australia. Bokarup Swamp, Kodjinup Swamp and Noobijup Lake are representative of the wetlands occurring in this region. They arc shallow (

Development Of Self-Adaptive Back Propagation And Derivative Free Training Algorithms In Artificial Neural Networks, Shamsuddin Ahmed Jan 2000

Development Of Self-Adaptive Back Propagation And Derivative Free Training Algorithms In Artificial Neural Networks, Shamsuddin Ahmed

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Three new iterative, dynamically self-adaptive, derivative-free and training parameter free artificial neural network (ANN) training algorithms are developed. They are defined as self-adaptive back propagation, multi-directional and restart ANN training algorithms. The descent direction in self-adaptive back propagation training is determined implicitly by a central difference approximation scheme, which chooses its step size according to the convergence behavior of the error function. This approach trains an ANN when the gradient information of the corresponding error function is not readily available. The self- adaptive variable learning rates per epoch are determined dynamically using a constrained interpolation search. As a result, appropriate …

Acari (Mite) Abundance And Diversity In Soil And Litter Layers Of Eucalyptus Globulus Labill (Tasmanian Bluegum) Plantations In Southwest Western Australia, Honi M. Adolphson Jan 2000

Acari (Mite) Abundance And Diversity In Soil And Litter Layers Of Eucalyptus Globulus Labill (Tasmanian Bluegum) Plantations In Southwest Western Australia, Honi M. Adolphson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

With the increased planting of E. globulus monoculture plantations, concerns surround the impact these mass plantings will have on the soil environment and wider ecosystem. Soil and litter mites are the dominant saprophages of terrestrial ecosystems, contributing to decomposition processes through their comminution and grazing activities. Despite the importance of mites to decomposition processes, there have been no investigations to date of the litter and soil communities under these plantations within Australia. This study investigated the impact of Eucalyptus globulus subsp. globulus (Tasmanian bluegum) monoculture plantations on the diversity and abundance of the soil and litter acarine (mite) fauna. Mite …

The Application Of Object-Oriented Techniques To Preliminary Design Problems, Patrick S. Mackessy Jan 2000

The Application Of Object-Oriented Techniques To Preliminary Design Problems, Patrick S. Mackessy

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Preliminary structural design is an early stage in building design during which the engineer formulates and assesses a number of different structural schemes. It is conceptual in nature and involves decision making, which relies on heuristics. Whilst preliminary structural design has not been well supported by PC software, recent research has indicated the potential for knowledge-based, object-oriented systems to assist in the area. This thesis explores the issues that arise when object-oriented techniques arc used to develop knowledge-based software. lt reviews certain basic principles of structural design, methods of representing structural design knowledge and earlier approaches to the design of …

Development, Management And Economy Of Show Caves, Arrigo A. Cigna, Ezio Burri Jan 2000

Development, Management And Economy Of Show Caves, Arrigo A. Cigna, Ezio Burri

International Journal of Speleology

The problems concerning the development of show caves are here considered by taking into account different aspects of the problem. A procedure to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been established in the last decade and it is now currently applied. Such an assessment starts with a pre-operational phase to obtain sufficient information on the undisturbed status of a cave to be developed into a show cave. Successively a programme for its development is established with the scope to optimise the intervention on the cave at the condition that its basic environmental parameters are not irreversibly modified. The …

The Freshman Connection: Implementing And Assessing A Plan To Increase Student Success, Pamela Downing-Hosten Jan 2000

The Freshman Connection: Implementing And Assessing A Plan To Increase Student Success, Pamela Downing-Hosten

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this practicum was to develop, implement, and assess a plan for reducing the number of freshmen at the high school who failed the grade, with failure being defined as the inability to earn 4 credits within 1 year. From the 1993-1994 school year until the 1997-1998 school year, an average of 17.7% of the 9th-grade class had to repeat the grade. Through the year-long implementation of the plan called the Freshman Connection program, the researcher hoped that the failure rate of 21.9% in 1998 would be reduced to 10.0% in 1999.

The Freshman Connection program entailed (a) …

Mobile Agents: Motivations And State-Of-The-Art Systems, Robert S. Gray, George Cybenko, David Kotz, Daniela Rus Jan 2000

Mobile Agents: Motivations And State-Of-The-Art Systems, Robert S. Gray, George Cybenko, David Kotz, Daniela Rus

Dartmouth Scholarship

A mobile agent is an executing program that can migrate, at times of its own choosing, from machine to machine in a heterogeneous network. On each machine, the agent interacts with stationary service agents and other resources to accomplish its task. In this chapter, we first make the case for mobile agents, discussing six strengths of mobile agents and the applications that benefit from these strengths. Although none of these strengths are unique to mobile agents, no competing technique shares all six. In other words, a mobile-agent system provides a single general framework in which a wide range of distributed …

A Unifying Approach For Researching Disasters: Disrupted Social Logic And Triangulating Interdisciplinary Methods, Andrew J. Hund Jan 2000

A Unifying Approach For Researching Disasters: Disrupted Social Logic And Triangulating Interdisciplinary Methods, Andrew J. Hund

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis develops a meso-level theory of disrupted social logic and suggests triangulation for its study. This theory addresses the inadequate definition, classification, and theoretical foundations of disaster research. The lack of control groups and researchers’ reliance on single methods are also addressed. Based on over 400 academic articles, books, published reports, and non-verbal communications, from 2500 BC to present, analytical induction was employed to develop the theory of disrupted social logic. A best evidence synthesis was also used to examine seventy-two proposed or in practice disaster research methodologies. Implications of this interdisciplinary theoretical approach are discussed. A new historical …

The Legal Duty Rule And Learning About Rules: A Case Study, Joel K. Goldstein Jan 2000

The Legal Duty Rule And Learning About Rules: A Case Study, Joel K. Goldstein

All Faculty Scholarship

Early in their law school careers, most students find that the notions they brought with them about law clash with the ideas encountered there. As a traditional first semester course, Contracts is one arena in which students experience most acutely that tension between expectation and reality.
/="/">
/="/">Most new law students probably expect law school professors to spend more time teaching basic legal rules.[1] They anticipate the education in black letter law that is the distinctive trait of bar review courses. They are, therefore, surprised by their professors’ suggestion, whether explicit or implicit, that being a good lawyer is …
