Long-Toed Salamanders In Harvested And Intact Douglas-Fir Forests Of Western Montana, George P. Naughton, Colin B. Henderson, Kerry R. Foresman, Rex L. Mcgraw Ii
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
There is little known about how timber harvest practices have affected terrestrial amphibians in the northern Rocky Mountains. Especially lacking is information on the effects of revised harvest methods that fall within the framework of environmental or New Forestry. We estimated the relative abundance of a common forest amphibian, the long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum) captured in pitfall arrays on intact, environmentally harvested, and overstory-removal harvested sites in mixed-conifer forests of western Montana. Pitfall data from 1994 through 1996 showed that previously logged sites contained significantly fewer long-toed salamanders regardless of harvest method used. The number of salamanders captured …
The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer
The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer
Dartmouth Scholarship
We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting and compare them to the age of the thick-disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best-fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ± 1.0 Gyr. The solar-metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin-disk age, 7.5 ± 0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -0.22) field stars whose kinematic and orbital parameters indicate that they are members of the thin disk were found to have an age of 9.7 ± 0.6 Gyr. The age for 47 Tuc was …
An Atm System Model And Wireless Channel Simulation, Karen Dunne
An Atm System Model And Wireless Channel Simulation, Karen Dunne
Masters
Congestion in the low frequency regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and demand for support of high bandwidth applications has prompted widespread investigations into networking technologies and communications media. Traditional networking technologies such as Ethernet that are not capable of adequately supporting high bandwidth applications (e.g. videoconferencing) are being replaced by high speed, high bandwidth technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In the communications media market, wireless systems are becoming ubiquitous due to their ease of installation and maintenance costs. In this research, the networking technology of interest is ATM. ATM used a cell switching architecture that allows seamless support …

On notable occasions, the format of a message acquires a heritage equal in significance to the message itself. Because of its history, familiarity, intrigue, or sheer repetition, an account's style of presentation may serve not only to characterize the account, but also to condition its recipient to a pre-ordained demeanor of expectation. Style and substance are thus comingled, and the medium subsumes the message.
It should come as no surprise that the described phenomenon claims a special affinity to the law and to legal "messages." Much of the information transmitted in law and in legal circles projects history, familiarity, intrigue, …

Business Case For Traffic Engineering, Dave Hartzell
Business Case For Traffic Engineering, Dave Hartzell
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This project and the accompanying case studies attempt to investigate and implement new network technologies in the realm of Traffic Engineering. Traffic Engineering provides a set of tools for network engineers and administrators that allow them to manipulate the network's behavior in a manner that better suites the needs of the users and their applications. There is a legitimate business case for Traffic Engineering. New applications and uses for the Internet are causing a shift in the type of traffic that was once common. This shift includes new traffic patterns that are generated by services like voice and video, peer-topeer …
The Japanese Law On Communications Interception During Criminal Investigatons: Translator's Introduction, Yohei Suda
The Japanese Law On Communications Interception During Criminal Investigatons: Translator's Introduction, Yohei Suda
Washington International Law Journal
Japan enacted the Law on Communications Interception During Criminal Investigations last year to help control organized crime. The legislation is, in part, a reaction to domestic and international pressure that grew from recent, well-publicized crimes such as the Aur Shinrikyo attack on a Tokyo subway. The Interception Law is a powerful tool for Japanese law enforcement, however the question of whether the Interception Law violates Japan's constitutional rights to privacy and secrecy of communication has not yet been resolved.
A Genre Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Marilyn Faye Garrett
A Genre Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Marilyn Faye Garrett
Theses (Pre-2016)
This study tests the hypothesis that Ralph Ellison's novel, Invisible Man, employs eclectic techniques, and is therefore a complex genre. Accordingly, the assumptions which undergird this investigation embrace notions attendant to folklore, myth and comedy. Testing these assumptions, the study proceeds with the following objectives: (1) , ,to isolate and identify major characteristics found in three genre of the literary canon, and (2) to focus on Jacques Lacan's theory of psychoanalysis and its applicability to the narratology of the novel. Specifically, there are three distinct concepts which shape the study. These are (1) Ellison's use of the blues in his …

A Reflection On Examinations As An Assessment Of Student Performance, Chiu-Yin Kwan.Ph.D
A Reflection On Examinations As An Assessment Of Student Performance, Chiu-Yin Kwan.Ph.D
Journal of Medical Education
Examinations and tests have traditionally been the primary if not the sole yardstick in measuring student performance in educational institutes ranging from elementary schools to universities. Medical schools in the Asian-Pacific region are no exception to this. In fact, it may not be an over-exaggeration to state that examinations, to some students, can seemingly be a matter of life and death. The author illustrates the commonly perceived flaws of conventional examinations through the telling of a true story of Doris, a medical student in Hong Kong, victimized by the competitiveness of conventional examinations, If not for the author's early detection …

Civil War Book Review
Allen C. Guelzo's new book fills a distinct void in modern Lincoln literature: it is an authoritative and rewarding study of Lincoln's evolving relationship to God and to ideas. And while the character who emerges may be a less-than-great Emancipator, he is also a greater-than-ever Unionist, and a f....

Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau
Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau
Dissertations
Representations of disability in American culture are saturated with negative images and meanings. Pervasive negativity threatens full societal membership and its related benefits of a sense of belonging, connectedness, and inclusion, and a source of identity, social networks and empowerment for people with disabilities.
Disability pride is a resistant movement that seeks to denaturalize assumptions about the negative experience of disability. The multicultural turn in counseling recognizes that competent practice requires awareness of diverse groups in society. Disability as the largest minority group in the U.S. requires counselor awareness. This study examined the representation of disability in a sample of …
Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr.
Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr.
Dissertations
This study explores the socio-cultural history of a school for Native American students on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in central South Dakota. The case study places the school's history (1886-present) within the context of the historic interaction between environment, cultures, and social change on the Great Plains.
This work focuses on a Catholic school and the multi-dimensional students and staff who constitute its story. These individuals acted neither as perpetually passive students nor simplistically sinister administrators. Instead, this dissertation broadly explores the challenging nature of intercultural relations that led to the founding of the school and how tribal/Catholic interactions …
Emotional Expressiveness And Problematic Behaviors Among Male Juvenile Sexual Offenders, General Offenders, And Nonoffenders, Carin M. Ness
Emotional Expressiveness And Problematic Behaviors Among Male Juvenile Sexual Offenders, General Offenders, And Nonoffenders, Carin M. Ness
Dissertations
This analytic variable study examined the potential differences that exist among male juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs), general offenders (GOs), and nonoffenders (NOs) on the emotional expressiveness variables of alexithymia and affective orientation, and three problematic behavior variables including self-defeating behavior, risk taking, and reckless behavior. It was hypothesized that JSOs and GOs would be statistically significantly different than NOs on all variables but not different from each other.
Hypotheses were tested by a MANOVA. When statistical significance was indicated, ANOVAs were computed to identify the specific groups and measures, which were statistically significant The significance level for all analyses was …
