A Study Of The Eastern Santa Clara Street Business District, Kumi Kikuzawa Nov 2000

A Study Of The Eastern Santa Clara Street Business District, Kumi Kikuzawa

Master's Projects

In many cities that have experienced fast growth, the aging of commercial districts has been an issue. As the city has sprawled, suburban shopping centers have been in more demand than aging inner-city commercial districts. As a result, they have been blighted and declined, and have become a target for redevelopment and revitalization.

The City of San Jose is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Since the 1960’s, San Jose has shifted from a farming community to the center of Silicon Valley (San Jose 1994a, 1). San Jose is now the largest city in Santa Clara County …

Black & White Tv: An Omaha Case Study Of The Role Of Race In Local Television News Employment., Laura Charlotte Shelton

Student Work

This study is a qualitative inquiry into the role race plays in hiring and promoting in the Omaha television market. By interviewing news directors and on-air talent, the researcher attempted to develop some bases for perceptions of race on the job. There also was an attempt to gather recommendations for ways to change the role of race in TV news. The responses were organized into themes that best summarized the feelings of the respondents. In the area of diversity in hiring, news employees talked about themes of competence and the negative impact race-based hiring can have. The themes that emerged …

Correlation Of A Social Skills Self-Rating Survey And A Teacher Rating Inventory For Students At A Residential School For The Deaf, James Thomas Haley

Student Work

Students aged 12 to 15 at a Midwestern residential school for the deaf completed the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Youngsters (MESSY- DHH). Faculty at the school completed the Meadow Kendall Social Emotional Assessment Inventory (SEAI) to rate the behavior of the same students. Pearson’s correlations were conducted to determine if relationships existed between scores on the MESSY-DHH and the SEAI. Results indicated inconsistent correlations between scores on the MESSY-DHH and individual scale scores on the SEAI.

Informal Aggregation: Procedural And Ethical Implications Of Coordination Among Counsel In Related Lawsuits, Howard M. Erichson Nov 2000

Informal Aggregation: Procedural And Ethical Implications Of Coordination Among Counsel In Related Lawsuits, Howard M. Erichson

Duke Law Journal

Even when related claims are not aggregated by any formal procedural mechanism, the lawyers involved in the separate lawsuits often coordinate their efforts. Such "informal aggregation" raises important questions about the boundaries of a dispute and the boundaries of the lawyer-client relationship. As an ethical matter, the central question is whether a lawyer owes ethical duties to a coordinating lawyer's client. Looking at confidentiality, loyalty, conflicts of interest, and malpractice, Professor Erichson suggests that ethical safeguards for clients of coordinating lawyers are neither strong enough nor explicit enough to provide adequate protection, and the problem inheres in the nature of …

Seeking Transformative Justice For Women: Views From Canada, Karlene Faith Nov 2000

Seeking Transformative Justice For Women: Views From Canada, Karlene Faith

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the article:

My purpose here is to situate gender as a key factor in a historical movement toward prison abolition. A shift toward restorative or transformative justice, theoretically, is reintegrative in that it benefits the offender, the victim and the community. The first offenders to be diverted from prison to any new program are generally those with the least serious offences and/or those who pose no risk of committing violence; women commonly fall into this category, but, as discussed, very few community alternatives exist for them. The last section addresses some of the key issues facing women in prison, …

Her Mistress’S Voice: Gynophonocentrism In Feminist Discourses, Mikko Keskinen Nov 2000

Her Mistress’S Voice: Gynophonocentrism In Feminist Discourses, Mikko Keskinen

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the article:

I will trace the metaphors of voice in the discourses of feminisms as articulated by Judith Fetterley, Kaja Silverman, Julia Kristeva, and Hélène Cixous. I will analyze the presuppositions of their vocal or sound imagery, paying special attention to the implications of the essentialism/constructivism opposition. It is not my intention to provide a comprehensive account of voice in feminisms, nor to make sweeping generalizations on the basis of a very limited corpus. Moreover, in spite of their differences in cultural background, period, and main area of study, the four theorists to be read are, as it were, …

Critical Reflective Practice And Workplace Learning : Impediments And Possibilities In Teacher Education, Barry Down, Carol Hogan Nov 2000

Critical Reflective Practice And Workplace Learning : Impediments And Possibilities In Teacher Education, Barry Down, Carol Hogan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Professional practica are an essential part of teacher education and other professional education programs, but university staff often express concern that prac. experiences are fundamentally conservative, emphasising preparation for the status quo rather than for what might be. In recent years other forms of workplace-based university learning have been devised, where staff have sought to build units of study around a core of reflective practice, action research and professional development. This paper describes one such initiative, a final semester internship for fourth year education students which enabled them to design and negotiate their own professional development plans in any one …

Transference And Psychological-Mindedness In Teachers, Erin Hanifin, Stephen Appel Nov 2000

Transference And Psychological-Mindedness In Teachers, Erin Hanifin, Stephen Appel

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The article is an argument for the relevance for our understanding of the pedagogic relationship of Freud’s discovery of transference. Commonalities between teaching and psychoanalysis are reviewed prior to a discussion of how the concept of transference might be applied to teaching, particularly to improving the teacher’s ‘psychological-mindedness’. The article concludes by considering the moral/professional issue of teachers making use of the transference processes at work in their classrooms.

Mercado Telefónico En México: Diez Años Después De La Privatización De Telmex Privatización De Telmex [The Telephone Market: 10 Years After The Privatization Of Telmex], Leonardo E. Torre Cepeda, Armando R. Lopez-Velasco

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Copyright And Democracy: A Cautionary Note, Christopher S. Yoo Nov 2000

Copyright And Democracy: A Cautionary Note, Christopher S. Yoo

Vanderbilt Law Review

Democratic theories of copyright have become quite the rage in recent years. A growing number of commentators have offered their views on the relationship between copyright law and the process of self-governance.' No scholar has been more committed to developing this perspective than Neil Netanel. In an important series of articles, Netanel has pursued a powerful and innovative project that attempts to reexamine copyright through the lens of democratic theory. His core concern is that the concentration of private wealth and power in communications and mass media is creating unprecedented disparities in the ability to be heard. The "speech hierarchy" …

Using 'Drop-Biasing' To Stabilize The Occupancy Of Random-Drop Queues With Tcp Traffic, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Nov 2000

Using 'Drop-Biasing' To Stabilize The Occupancy Of Random-Drop Queues With Tcp Traffic, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper describes how the use of ‘drop-biasing’, a technique to control the distribution of the gap between consecutive packet losses in random drop queues (such as RED) can be used to reduce the variability of the queue occupancy with TCP traffic. Reducing the variance of the queue occupancy reduces delay jitter for buffered packets, as well as decreases the likelihood of buffer underflow. We find that modifying the packet drop probabilities to ensure a minimum separation between consecutive packet drops serves to decrease the variability in the queue occupancy. This is really achieved as a result of the increased …

The Four Discourses Of Law: A Lacanian Analysis Of Legal Practice And Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder Nov 2000

The Four Discourses Of Law: A Lacanian Analysis Of Legal Practice And Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article explores the evolving roles of modern lawyers, highlighting the tension between traditional duties like confidentiality and newer disclosure obligations, particularly in securities law. It employs Lacan's discourse theory to analyze legal roles, categorizing them into master, university, analyst, and hysteric discourses. The article argues that understanding these discourses can inform ethical frameworks and professional responsibilities, advocating for a nuanced approach to legal representation.

Market Hierarchy And Copyright In Our System Of Free Expression, Neil W. Netanel Nov 2000

Market Hierarchy And Copyright In Our System Of Free Expression, Neil W. Netanel

Vanderbilt Law Review

If trends of the past two decades persist, a vast inequality of wealth may well become a fundamental, defining characteristic of political and social life in many Western democracies, particularly the United States.' Among its potentially pernicious effects, massive wealth disparity threatens the integrity of the democratic process. Liberal democracy aspires to political equality, which demands that opportunities to acquire and assert political power be widespread and broadly distributed. Political equality does not require economic equality. But political equality may be undermined by severe disparities of wealth. Absent preventive regulation, private wealth buys political power. It enables those with greater …
