James I. Porter. Constructions Of The Classical Body (Book Review), Walter Stevenson Jan 2000

James I. Porter. Constructions Of The Classical Body (Book Review), Walter Stevenson

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

This book brings together in a convenient package a variety of stimulating work by an impressive array of scholars interested in ancient sexuality and gender. Topics covered in the book vary in time and place from Archaic Greece to Medieval Europe, in field from Art History and Anthropology to Literature and Philosophy, and in form from prose poetry to painstaking scholarly exposition. Some critics may say that this volume represents just another ill-defined collection of warmed-over talks and essays; that it tries to plug one more new life-support line into the tired body of 1970s French theory; and that it …

Mothers And Fathers Of Invention: The Intellectual Founders Of Adr, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 2000

Mothers And Fathers Of Invention: The Intellectual Founders Of Adr, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

When we think of the "founding" of the ADR movement (particularly, but not exclusively, in law), from when do we date it? Whom do we think of as our leaders? Many of us think of Frank Sander and the "multi-door courthouse" suggested by his famous paper, delivered at the Pound Conference on the Causes of Popular Dissatisfaction with the Administration of Justice in 1976. For others, the publication of Roger Fisher and William Ury's "Getting to Yes," signaled an interest in a changed paradigm for engaging in legal negotiations. Some may associate ADR's nascency with early practical efforts to institutionalize …

The Collusion Of Law And Science In The Piracy Of Human Genes, Tina Piper Jan 2000

The Collusion Of Law And Science In The Piracy Of Human Genes, Tina Piper

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Advances in biotechnology over the last decade have created a demand for biological resources by transnational corporations. The search for biological resources has primarily focused on acquiring these resources from indigenous communities and countries of the South. However, the means by which these biological resources are obtained is exploitative and often tantamount to theft (or, as it is commonly known, biopiracy). As a result of communities attempting to prevent this theft and corporations seeking more international legitimacy for their "bioprospecting", "bioprospecting contracts" are more frequently being concluded between governments and corporations. Through the prism of current events in Iceland, I …

Reproductive Health

This paper is part of the Policy Series in Reproductive Health, which shares research undertaken by the Reproductive Health Working Group (RHWG). It describes the Reproductive Health Intervention Study, which designed and tested a model of essential reproductive health (RH) services. RHWG was established in 1988 as part of a special program on the health of women and children within the context of the family and community initiated by the Population Council’s Regional Office for the West Asia and North Africa region. The paper identifies a framework of basic service components that address RH and shows that their delivery is …

Adolescents And Reproductive Health In Pakistan: A Literature Review, Ayesha Khan Jan 2000

Adolescents And Reproductive Health In Pakistan: A Literature Review, Ayesha Khan

Reproductive Health

This report reviews research and findings on adolescents and reproductive health in Pakistan. The material is drawn from a range of national surveys and medical research, as well as information gathered by nongovernmental organizations. Although adolescents make up a quarter of the population of Pakistan, they are still a new subject for research. The characterization of adolescents for this review is individuals ages 10–19, whether or not they are married, sexually active, or parents. The discussion of the research material is based on the assumption that adolescence is a developmental phase, a transition from childhood to adulthood. Basic data on …

Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley Jan 2000

Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

"A twofold problem faces Canadian education. The first fold involves the indoctrination debate, still unsettled after several decades, yet still bearing decisively on educational policy. The second fold involves the changing Canadian educational landscape, now obviously characterized by increasing cultural, religious, and linguistic plurality. This plurality manifests itself in tribalism and in regular conflicts about normativity in the public square. In the midst of this plurality, many Canadian parents of school-aged children believe that courts, provincial governments, and educational authorities deny them educational justice by determining that their own religion cannot inform what their children learn in schools. Yet, from …

Images Of Ruin: Decay In A Post-Industrial World, Juha Tolonen Jan 2000

Images Of Ruin: Decay In A Post-Industrial World, Juha Tolonen

Theses : Honours

This thesis will examine the significance of ruin and decay in today's society, particularly the sites of industrial ruin in a post-industrial environment. It will explore the ways in which sites of ruin have been used and represented by competing cultural interests in the past and present. A focus will be on the industry of photography and its effects upon our understanding of sites of ruin, revealing possibilities for change in our aesthetic awareness of these sites. I will also include a portfolio of my own images reflecting my views and interests on a decaying industrial landscape.

A Narrative Epistemology Of Sacred Frame Constructedness And Deconstruction: Exploratory Analyses Of Ways Of Knowing Sacred Interpretation And Understanding Through Context, Symbol/Concept, And Role, Joshua M. Aerie Jan 2000

A Narrative Epistemology Of Sacred Frame Constructedness And Deconstruction: Exploratory Analyses Of Ways Of Knowing Sacred Interpretation And Understanding Through Context, Symbol/Concept, And Role, Joshua M. Aerie

Honors Papers

The purpose of this Anthropology Honors Thesis is to understand sacred construction through narrative epistemology. That is, with the help of an analytical model of framework, frame, and strip, I analyze narratives regarding incidents of disruption and incongruity within the sacred framework as a way of knowing the sacred as a social realm, constructed as dialectically different from the domain of "conventional" social cognition. Specifically, I will examine how the stories embody ideas about how the sacred framework constructs fragile interpretive frames susceptible to incidents which challenge its structural rigidity and inflexibility. These stories expose the constructedness of the sacred.

Phylogenetic Inference And Neanderthal Mitochondrial Dna: Comparison Of Parsimony And Distance Models, Menahem Baguio Doura Jan 2000

Phylogenetic Inference And Neanderthal Mitochondrial Dna: Comparison Of Parsimony And Distance Models, Menahem Baguio Doura

Honors Papers

Recently, mtDNA was successfully extracted and sequenced from the Neanderthal type specimen (Krings et al, 1997, 1999). Researches attempted to determine the genetic relationship between the Neanderthal specimen and modem human populations using phylogenetic analysis and concluded that the variation existing between the Neanderthal specimen and the modem lineages falls outside the range of variation of modem human populations. Using molecular mutation rate assumptions, it has been concluded that the Neanderthal line diverged from the line leading to modem humans hundreds of thousands of years previous to earlier estimates. This suggests that Neanderthals went extinct without contributing genes to the …

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland Jan 2000

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland

Articles & Book Chapters

The application of criminal law to consensual sex is an arena of conflict and contest between conservative and liberal forces in the United States, with occasional feminist interventions. The same arguments tend to recur on each side of the debate. Conservatives assert the appropriateness and necessity of enforcing a particular Judeo-Christian sexual morality through law. Liberals argue for tolerance of private consensual sexual conduct. When the debate shifts from the private to the public arena, conservatives may argue privacy principles, asserting the right of bystanders to be let alone, whereas liberals may shift to freedom of expression arguments. In this …

A Study Of Language Used In Magazine Reports Of Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Laura B. Chorbajian Jan 2000

A Study Of Language Used In Magazine Reports Of Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Laura B. Chorbajian

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the descriptors used to describe victims and alleged perpetrators in recent articles about rape trials and sexual assault trials in popular U.S. magazines to determine whether they were significantly different in connotative meaning as perceived by the respondents. Forty-four articles were examined for descriptors. The ten most commonly used descriptors for the victims and the ten most commonly used descriptors for the alleged perpetrators were then rated on Osgood's semantic differential by 107 undergraduates from the University of Rhode Island. Results showed that descriptors for the victims and alleged perpetrators were found …

Data Points Or Cultural Entities: A Gis-Based Archaeological Predictive Model In A Post-Positivist Framework., Linwood Jesse Rouse Jan 2000

Data Points Or Cultural Entities: A Gis-Based Archaeological Predictive Model In A Post-Positivist Framework., Linwood Jesse Rouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Archaeological predictive models have been used in conjunction with sampling strategies, in large scale archaeological surveys, for over thirty years. During this time, these models have undergone many conceptual and theoretical changes. Archaeological predictive models stemmed from the positivist Processual Archaeology, but the shift from positivism has precipitated the need to reconsider the ideas from which they are based. There is a general trend within the current spectrum of ideologies to support the importance of cultural information in archaeological research. The following research contends that cultural information has not been utilized to its full extent in archaeological models and that …

The Establishment Of A U.S. Federal Data Protection Agency To Define And Regulate Internet Privacy And Its Impact On U.S.-China Relations: Marco Polo Where Are You?, Omar Saleem Jan 2000

The Establishment Of A U.S. Federal Data Protection Agency To Define And Regulate Internet Privacy And Its Impact On U.S.-China Relations: Marco Polo Where Are You?, Omar Saleem

Journal Publications

Marco Polo's desire to explore new worlds and exchange both ideas and goods should be the impetus behind the Internet. The Internet is the global economic network of the new millennium. This Article first discusses the factors that have caused both the reevaluation of Western notions of privacy, and consideration of the establishment of a Federal Data Protections Agency. Next, the article discusses the EU's approach to regulating Internet privacy. This section is followed by a discussion of why the U.S. and EU approaches to Internet privacy regulation must be implemented from a global, or MarcoPolo-like perspective. The article then …

The American 'Legal' Dilemma: Colorblind I/Colorblind Ii--The Rules Have Changed Again: A Semantic Apothegmatic Permutation, John C. Duncan Jr Jan 2000

The American 'Legal' Dilemma: Colorblind I/Colorblind Ii--The Rules Have Changed Again: A Semantic Apothegmatic Permutation, John C. Duncan Jr

Journal Publications

"Our Constitution is colorblind" initially meant that white majority preferences could not and should not be reflected in government action. The maxim now means race should not be reflected at all in government action. The answer to racism lies somewhere between well-reasoned "blind" hope and historically-proven skepticism. Part I of this Article discusses the ideal of the colorblind society; Part II discusses what this Article deems as Colorblind I. Part III places each colorblind argument in perspective, and seeks to illustrate that the concept of colorblindness could be an ideal, but has rather become meaningless rhetoric in an endless racial …

Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Fraud: An Attitudinal Study In A Middle Eastern Multinational Corporation, Douglas Moore Watson Jan 2000

Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Fraud: An Attitudinal Study In A Middle Eastern Multinational Corporation, Douglas Moore Watson

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

This research tested the theory that cultural heritage affects attitudes toward business-related fraud and, as a consequence, influences ethical decisions. A sample of 695 white-collar employees from a Middle Eastern multinational corporation (MNC), who represented nine world cultures, were asked to evaluate scenarios describing five business frauds--bribery, conflict of interest, embezzlement, management fraud, and industrial espionage--against a 7-point Likert-type scale that measured levels of approval. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the responses revealed those claiming African, Caribbean/South American, European, Middle Eastern, and North American cultural heritage viewed fraudulent behavior with a greater degree of disapproval than did those claiming Asian, …

The Moral Hazard Of The Estate Tax , Carolyn C. Jones Jan 2000

The Moral Hazard Of The Estate Tax , Carolyn C. Jones

Cleveland State Law Review

The current debate about wealth transfer taxation has its themes of morality as well. Opponents have labeled the tax as “immoral.” Taxation is about morality. It is both useful and necessary to consider moral arguments in the debate about the estate tax. In an area largely consigned to economists and philosophers, it is beneficial to broaden perspectives. One could expand the range of academic disciplines considered-to history, psychology, and sociology, for example. One should also take into account the narratives of those affected by the issue. This essay can only probe into this question, beginning with Andrew Carnegie and the …
