Narrative Preaching: A Study Of Contemporary Theory And The Development And Implementation Of An Integrative Model In The Walla Walla College Church, John C. Cress Jan 2000

Narrative Preaching: A Study Of Contemporary Theory And The Development And Implementation Of An Integrative Model In The Walla Walla College Church, John C. Cress

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Topic

The topic of this project is narrative preaching. Post-modern culture is characterized by a surfeit of information and a famine of meaning. A cacophony of voices competes for its attention and in such an environment God’s Word frequently goes unheard. Thus it is of critical importance that the gospel be heard in a "language" this culture readily understands. Because it is specifically attuned to the contemporary sensibility of human beings (i.e., it is a “language” most individuals intuitively understand), narrative and narrative forms of preaching have particular power to assist individuals in coming to saving faith in Jesus …

Development Of A Series Of Bible Study Guides To Prepare Preteens For Baptism And Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Francois J. Sarault Jan 2000

Development Of A Series Of Bible Study Guides To Prepare Preteens For Baptism And Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Francois J. Sarault

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

According to the 1992 Valuegenesis Study, a survey of Adventist youth in grades 7-12 showed that 77 percent wanted a deeper relationship with God, and 66 percent were interested or very interested in Bible study. Yet, an informal survey of existing materials created to lead SDA youth into a deeper relationship with Christ through Bible study, baptism into Christ, and active membership in the Adventist Church points to these existing materials as being inadequate in approach and content. Preparing preteens for baptism and active membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church must include something more than simplifying adult Bible studies …

Developing Guidelines For Functional Substitutes For Ugandan Marriage Practices, Daniel Semakula Serunjogi Jan 2000

Developing Guidelines For Functional Substitutes For Ugandan Marriage Practices, Daniel Semakula Serunjogi

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Since the introduction of Christianity in Uganda there has been a tension between customary and Christian marriage practices, each struggling to exist at the expense of the other. The crux of the struggle is the validity and sufficiency of customary marriage vis-a-vis Christian marriage rites. Christian youth of marriageable age have been caught in the crossfire, and marital stability has been one of the casualties of the struggle. This study suggests bridging the gap between the two practices.

Method

Biblical teaching on marriage is established through exegesis of texts such as Gen 2:20-24, Matt 19:4-6, and 1 Cor 7. …

Living African Elephants Belong To Two Species: Loxodonta Africana (Blumenbach, 1797) And Loxodonta Cyclotis (Matschie, 1900), Peter Grubb, Colin P. Groves, Joseph P. Dudley, Jeheskel Shoshani Jan 2000

Living African Elephants Belong To Two Species: Loxodonta Africana (Blumenbach, 1797) And Loxodonta Cyclotis (Matschie, 1900), Peter Grubb, Colin P. Groves, Joseph P. Dudley, Jeheskel Shoshani

Elephant

Living bush and forest African elephants, hitherto regarded as a single species, are evolutionarily and ecologically distinct forms. They deserve to be ranked as full species: the bush African elephant, Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach, 1797), and the forest African elephant Loxodonta cyclotis (Matschie, 1900). L. cyclotis is phylogenetically more primitive than L. africana. The implications of this designation may help in conserving these keystone species.

Proceedings Of The 2nd Conference Of Doctoral Education In Design (2000): Foundations For The Future, David Durling, Ken Friedman

DRS Conference Volumes

The La Clusaz conference focused on four central themes:

1 philosophies and theories of design

2 foundations and methods of design research

3 form and structure for the doctorate in design

4 the relationship between practice and research in design

Participants presented findings, debated ideas, proposed benchmarks for the future development of the doctorate in design, and entered into dialogue on how to develop programs. The conference encouraged participants to interact, using each session as a genuine opportunity to confer. One important goal of the conference was establishing significant working relationships, research alliances, and partnerships among universities.

The Krobo And Bodom, Kirk Stanfield Jan 2000

The Krobo And Bodom, Kirk Stanfield

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Certain relatively large beads, almost always found in Ghana, have come to be called "bodom" by bead traders, collectors, and researchers. Most students of this bead believe it is the product of the Krobo powder-glass industry proliferating today in southeastern Ghana. Upon closer inspection, however, there appear to be two distinct groups of bodom that we may, for convenience, call "old" and "new." While the new bodom are definitely made in Ghana today, using techniques that have been observed and documented, the old bodom are substantially different in enough ways to suggest that they were made elsewhere by other methods. …

Passports And Passages: Tests Of Yemeni Women's Citizenship Rights, Sheila Carapico, Anna Wuerth Jan 2000

Passports And Passages: Tests Of Yemeni Women's Citizenship Rights, Sheila Carapico, Anna Wuerth

Political Science Faculty Publications

Rights and legal status are often tested at the margins. Questions are less likely to arise about how general principles apply under ordinary circumstances than about how specific articles of particular laws speak to unusual situations. The test of legal status comes through case law in the form of judgments about claims made in the context of specific, even peculiar, fact sequences. Rights are affirmed or asserted on behalf of social groups when courts or tribunals find that they have been violated in individual cases. So it is, too, with citizen rights for Yemeni women. Under ordinary circumstances the daughters …

The Process Geography Of Law (As Approached Through Andalucian Gitano Family Law), Susan G. Drummond Jan 2000

The Process Geography Of Law (As Approached Through Andalucian Gitano Family Law), Susan G. Drummond

Articles & Book Chapters

Comparative law and legal anthropology have for long theorized on the basis of a traditional geography which saw states, regions, locales and social fields as having durable boundaries containing stable and homogenous cultures. This idea of place is now undergoing a massive transformation in response to the effects of and theories about globalization. The emerging ‘process geography’ rejects these traditional ideas, arguing that they are not, and indeed have never been aspects of reality, which is better represented by an imagery of processes. However, it is argued here that globalization is not a synonym for homogenization, nor has place suddenly …

Economic Impact Of International Students On The Dayton Local Economy For Academic Year 1997-1998, Willie Kim Kamara

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This study, the Economic Impact of Wright State University International Students on the Dayton Local Economy, examines the financial contributions of international students at both the graduate and undergraduate level to the Dayton area. The study was conducted in the fall of 1998 among 120 students drawn from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The study agrees with similar research findings. International students are a source of economic benefits in the regions where they reside. International students at Wright State University received grants and income from Dayton area residents. Consequently, it recommends that universities should take steps to recruit and retain …

Introduction, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri

Law Faculty Publications

Putting this issue together was more difficult than we initially expected. Translating and editing jurisprudential articles that fuse law with philosophy and religion requires very advanced skills and is very demanding. Despite all our collective efforts to meet these challenges we are likely to have missed some errors. We are fortunate that everyone who participated in this project was ready to do their best, and thank everyone, particularly our authors, for their commitment and perseverance. Needless to say, the articles in this issue represent the views of their authors and do not reflect views of the Journal itself. The Journal …

Legalizing Oral History: Proving Aboriginal Claims In Canadian Courts, Kent Mcneil, Lori Ann Roness Jan 2000

Legalizing Oral History: Proving Aboriginal Claims In Canadian Courts, Kent Mcneil, Lori Ann Roness

Articles & Book Chapters

Large areas of Canada are still subject to land claims by the Aboriginal peoples, who include the Indian, Inuit, and Metis. These claims arise mainly in regions where land-surrender treaties were not signed in the past, notably in British Columbia, Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces, and the North. Most of them get resolved through negotiation and agreement, but a few end up in court. When that happens, the onus is on the Aboriginal peoples to prove their claims in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian legal system. This article will examine some of the difficulties Aboriginal peoples encounter when they …

Tribal Constructs And Kinship Realities : Individual And Family Organization On The Grand Ronde Reservation From 1856, Aeron Teverbaugh Jan 2000

Tribal Constructs And Kinship Realities : Individual And Family Organization On The Grand Ronde Reservation From 1856, Aeron Teverbaugh

Dissertations and Theses

This project examines marriage and residence patterns on the Grand Ronde Reservation between 1856 and the early 1900s. It demonstrates that indigenous cultural patterns continued despite a colonial imagination that refused to see them. Members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde continued to live in family groups much as they had in the pre-reservation era. They continued to exhibit patterns of marriage and kinship that were described in the ethnographies and by the earliest explorers in the Oregon area.

A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr Jan 2000

A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr

Dissertations and Theses

The speech that mothers use when addressing adults has consistently been shown to exhibit modifications when the conversation partner is their language-learning child. Fathers adopt similar changes in the structural linguistic aspects of their Child Directed Speech (CDS), but their patterns of discourse remain more of a challenge for the child. This contrast in parental language is thought to be beneficial to the language-learning child: a mother's language focuses on the child as a conversation partner, whilst a father's more demanding language is considered a "Bridge" between the mother's and that of adults in the outside world. With family roles …

Chronometers And Units In Early Archaeology And Paleontology, R. L. Lyman, Michael J. O'Brien Jan 2000

Chronometers And Units In Early Archaeology And Paleontology, R. L. Lyman, Michael J. O'Brien

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Early in the nineteenth century, geologist Charles Lyell reasoned that successively older faunas would contain progressively more extinct species and younger faunas relatively more extant species. The present, with one-hundred percent extant species, was the chronological anchor. In archaeology a similar notion underpins the direct historical approach: Successively older cultures will contain progressively fewer of the cultural traits found in extant cultures and relatively more prehistoric traits. As in Lyell's scheme, the chronological anchor is the present. When A. L. Kroeber invented frequency seriation in the second decade of the twentieth century, he retained the present as a chronological anchor …

Tell Hesban And Vicinity In The Iron Age, Paul J. Ray Jan 2000

Tell Hesban And Vicinity In The Iron Age, Paul J. Ray

Dissertations

Problem. Tell Hesban is a major archaeological ruin in central Transjordan. It was excavated from 1968-76 by Andrews University. However, almost 25 years after the termination of this endeavor, a final report dealing with the Iron Age remains has not yet appeared. Although relatively little remains from the Iron Age, which is the earliest period represented on the tell, an understanding of what is left is nevertheless important for comprehending the role the site played in the region at this time.

Method. A historical research design has been used in this study. The excavated architectural and soil/debris layers were analyzed …

Perceived Health Status, Preventive Health Behaviors, Formal Education, And Potential Barriers To Health Care In A Rural Population, Tori Renee Gaultier Jan 2000

Perceived Health Status, Preventive Health Behaviors, Formal Education, And Potential Barriers To Health Care In A Rural Population, Tori Renee Gaultier

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine preventive health behaviors, perceived health status, level of formal education, and potential barriers to health care in a rural northern mid-westem state using Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory. A short questionnaire was designed to identify factors that may influence health for rural residents. The sample consisted of 159 adults. The questionnaires were hand delivered to 299 randomly selected homes. Analysis was performed using descriptive and Chi-square statistics. The results supported an association between fewer preventive health behaviors and more potential barriers to health care (χ2 = 36.72, p < .001). A higher level of formal education was associated with higher perceived health status (χ2 = 13.99, p < .001). Potential barriers to health care were not found to be associated with lower perceived health status.

A Traditional Lakota Zoological Folk Taxonomy : An In Depth Study Of Biological And Cosmological Views Of Animal Classification And Nomenclature Among The Lakota, Gerald R. Scott

Honors Capstones

The focus of this work is to record and clarify the traditional views of the Lakota People, in regards to how they name and classify their zoological world. The focus for many ethnozoologists is to study how mankind conceptualizes his natural environment. A number of scholars in ethnozoology have tried to show cross cultural links to possibly explain similarities in the way mankind names and classifies objects in his natural environment. The idea of there being recognizable groupings of animals is found in all languages. These are referred to as ethnozoological categories. According to some scholars (Berlin, Breedlove, and Raven …
