A Humanist In Honors: Another Look At Catherine Cater, Paul Homan
A Humanist In Honors: Another Look At Catherine Cater, Paul Homan
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In 2000 Catherine Cater marks her 55th year of teaching, a career which began in 1945 upon completion of her Ph.D. in English at the University of Michigan. Since 1962 she has taught at North Dakota State University, and although she officially retired from the faculty in 1982, she has continued to teach philosophy, direct humanities tutorials, and advise students on a volunteer basis. When the faculty at NDSU recognized her with the university's most prestigious teaching award, they made note of her role as the embodiment of the teacher-scholar "who has kept alive the tradition of liberal studies at …

The Use Of An Ethnic Food Frequency Questionnaire Among Hispanic Women, Susan Jordan
The Use Of An Ethnic Food Frequency Questionnaire Among Hispanic Women, Susan Jordan
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The objective of this study was to determine if an Ethnic Food Frequency questionnaire more accurately reflected food intake among immigrant Hispanic women compared to US-born Hispanic women. Participants in the study consisted of 30 immigrant and 25 US-born Hispanic low-income women living in the Grand Island, Nebraska, area. A traditional food frequency questionnaire used by the Nebraska Women, Infants, and Children's (WIC) Special Supplemental Food program and a modified questionnaire containing ethnic foods were administered to the women. The immigrant group consumed more of the traditional Hispanic foods than did the US-born group. A traditional food frequency questionnaire that …

Death And Disability In The Heartland: Corporate (Mis)Conduct, Regulatory Responses, And The Plight Of Latino Workers In The Meatpacking Industry, Ann-Maria Wahl, Steven E. Gunkel, Thomas W. Sanchez
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Death and disability remain serious problems in the meatpacking industry, which increasingly depends on Latino workers. Here we examine these problems and the dynamics that heighten and minimize the hazards encountered in meatpacking plants. Drawing from published and unpublished sources, we provide statistical profiles and ethnographic accounts to capture the health and safety risks Latino workers face in the meatpacking plants of Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. Guided by recent research in labor market segmentation and the politics of social regulation, we trace the increased risk of injury and illness for Latinos to three intersecting dynamics: corporate conduct and misconduct on …

Changes In Treatment For Malaria: Western Influence On Indigenous Practice, Kourtney L. James
Changes In Treatment For Malaria: Western Influence On Indigenous Practice, Kourtney L. James
African Diaspora ISPs
This paper assesses the impact of western medical influence on the use of indigenous medical practices for malaria. The research was conducted through interviews and observations in four communities within the city of Cape Coast. Section one focuses on the perceptions of malaria held by members in the communities, while section two determines the traditional and western treatments administered for malaria, including the reasons that support individual choices. Section three centers around the shifts in treatment for malaria occurring during individual lifetimes and across generations. Lastly, section four places the collected data in context of private and government efforts to …
Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz
Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz
Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The last decade has seen a significant growth of the Latino population in the Midwest, particularly in rural communities. We discuss the forces that have stimulated the growth of the Latino population in the region. We use data from the Current Population Surveys (1988-1997) to assess the demographic and employment growth of the Latino population in the Midwest. Because of the limitations of secondary data, we also illustrate the growth of the Latino population with evidence from Nebraska and a selected area of the state. Data analysis suggests that population estimates of the Latino population generated by the US Bureau …

“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio
“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio
History Faculty Publications
This essay provides a selective overview of the Canadian historiography on family. The roots of family history not only extend backwards much further than the “new social history,” bom of the tumultuous 1960s, they are buried deep in several other disciplines, most notably sociology, anthropology, and demography, whose practitioners were concerned as much with the historical process of family change as with the state of families contemporary to their times. I consider how pioneering social scientists, by grappling with the family's relationship to structural change, historicized early 20th century family studies and offered up many of the questions, concepts, theories, …

Just Compensation, Incentives, And Social Meanings, Hanoch Dagan
Just Compensation, Incentives, And Social Meanings, Hanoch Dagan
Michigan Law Review
In Takings and Distributive Justice, I proposed a progressive interpretation of the Compensation Clause. In his response, published in this issue, Professor Lunney challenges the plausibility and the desirability of my interpretation and proposes an alternative. This Essay compares our approaches. It concludes that Professor Lunney's careful examination of the public choice analysis of takings does refine my theory. Contrary to Professor Lunney's claims, however, these refinements reinforce - rather than undermine - the viability of a progressive takings doctrine. Parts I and II set the stage by summarizing the principal claims made, respectively, in my original Article and in …
