Possible Levels Of Animal Consciousness With Reference To Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg, Spencer K. Lynn Dec 2000

Possible Levels Of Animal Consciousness With Reference To Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg, Spencer K. Lynn

Sentience Collection

Researchers often study nonhuman abilities by assuming their subjects form representations about perceived stimuli and then process such information; why then would consciousness be required, and, if required, at what level? Arguments about nonhuman consciousness range from claims of levels comparable to humans to refutation of any need to study such phenomena. We suggest that (a) species exhibit different levels attuned to their ecological niches, and (b) animals, within their maximum possible level, exhibit different extents of awareness appropriate to particular situations, much like humans (presumably conscious) who often act without conscious awareness of factors controlling their behavior. We propose …

The Role Of Storytelling In Effective Family Literacy Programs, Barbara C. Palmer, Sara Marie Leiste, Kim D. James, Shirley M. Ellis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The family literacy movement, which emphasizes respect for diversity and the cultural heritage of participants, is gaining momentum. Acknowledging the importance of family-aseducator, researchers have searched for effective strategies to develop children's oral language and literacy more authentically. The art of storytelling provides an excellent vehicle for promoting and enhancing language and literacy development within families. A sampling of effective family literacy programs across the United States revealed that each included storytelling as a vital component.

Amatory Jurisprudence And The Querelle Des Lois, Peter Goodrich Dec 2000

Amatory Jurisprudence And The Querelle Des Lois, Peter Goodrich

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Early common law, both Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman, offered plaintiffs a choice between love and law. Lovedays were more frequent than lawdays, and love explicitly took precedence over formal law. The judgment of love took the form of agreement through amity rather than enmity, affect rather than agon or trial. Using the institution of lovedays as a starting point, Goodrich's Article goes on to trace a longer-term continental history of courts and judgments of love that spans over five centuries and plays out in poetry, theater, and literature as much as in any secular legal institution. Offering a synopsis of the …

Are There Nothing But Texts In This Class? Interpreting The Interpretive Turns In Legal Thought, Robin L. West Dec 2000

Are There Nothing But Texts In This Class? Interpreting The Interpretive Turns In Legal Thought, Robin L. West

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article examines the impact of the twenty-year-old "turn" toward interpretation in legal and constitutional scholarship. In part, because of the impact of Hans-Georg Gadamer's work, scores of critical legal scholars, including some of those writing for this Symposium, now think of adjudication and legal discourse generally as primarily interpretive, rather than economic or political or distinctively legal enterprises. This turn toward interpretation has opened the way for new insights and ways of thinking, but it has also come with costs. It has, for example, diverted attention from the ways in which constitutional law might be appropriately criticized by reference …

Gis-Based Decision Support For Drained Wetland Resoration In The Eel River Watershed Of N. E. Indiana, Xiangheng Yang Dec 2000

Gis-Based Decision Support For Drained Wetland Resoration In The Eel River Watershed Of N. E. Indiana, Xiangheng Yang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop cost-effect and accurate methods to identify optimal restorable drained wetland cropland sites. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data analysis was used to identify the potential cropland candidate sites in the initial step. The result of digital TM data analysis shows that the overall classification accuracy in identifying classes of potential restoration candidate hydric soils is 86.7%. This accuracy shows that the TM data digital analysis is a cost-effective method for identifying poorly drained cropland hydric soils potentially suitable for wetland conversiOn. To support multi-factorial analysis in the final site screening, a Spatial Decision …

“Sketches Of Spain”: Richard Wright's Pagan Spain And African-American Representations Of The Hispanic, Guy J. Reynolds Dec 2000

“Sketches Of Spain”: Richard Wright's Pagan Spain And African-American Representations Of The Hispanic, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

At the start of Pagan Spain (1957), Richard Wright recalled a 1946 conversation with Gertrude Stein; she encouraged him to visit Spain: “ ‘You'll see what the Western world is made of. Spain is primitive, but lovely. ’ ” Wright meditated on his fascination with that country, an obsession rooted in the Civil War's political upheaval: “The fate of Spain hurt me, haunted me; I was never able to stifle a hunger to understand what had happened there and why” (PS, 10). Wright wrote as a leftist, as a political writer who had published anti-Franco articles. In his …

Borders Or Horizons? Gadamer And Habermas Revisited, Fred R. Dallmayr Dec 2000

Borders Or Horizons? Gadamer And Habermas Revisited, Fred R. Dallmayr

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Article, Dallmayr examines the status of borders and demarcations. Are borders markers of separation and exclusion, or are they more like hyphens or horizons indicating a correlation without sameness, a distinctness opening up to alterity? This Article investigates this question by returning to the -so-called "Gadamer-Habermas Debate." While Part I recapitulates some of Hans-Georg Gadamer's teachings, especially with reference to a "universal hermeneutics," Part II reviews some of Jürgen Habermas's critical rejoinders and initiatives aiming basically at a parceling of forms of human knowledge. In the concluding part, an effort is made to highlight the significance of the …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of School Culture In Relation To Job Satisfaction And Commitment, Mayda Bahamonde-Gunnell

Dissertations

The concepts of culture and climate have been investigated in the corporate world and have been found to relate to increased job satisfaction and commitment. Schools can also benefit from such findings. In the school setting there are a number of studies that have been conducted relating school culture and climate to student achievement, but few have investigated the relationship of school climate and culture to job commitment and satisfaction.

Organizational culture, employee job satisfaction, an d employee commitment are all variables that must be measured in order to investigate how culture affects the organization. In this study, teachers’ perceptions …

Professional Expertise Of Community-Based Occupational Therapists, Lori Ann Madaus Lemorie Dec 2000

Professional Expertise Of Community-Based Occupational Therapists, Lori Ann Madaus Lemorie

Masters Theses

Occupational therapists are increasingly practicing in community-based settings. Due to changes in the health care system, the need for defining roles, and explaining what a profession can contribute to health care has been highlighted. The major goal of this study was to identify job roles, job skills, and professional expertise of community-based therapists. The Community Practice Project survey was mailed to 200 AOTA registered community-based therapists. A response rate of 42% was achieved. The results provided a profile of the typical community-based therapist. Principal roles, job skills, and areas of professional expertise were also identified. The adequacy of educational preparation …
