The Virtual Sociality Of Rights: The Case Of "Women's Rights Are Human Rights", Annelise Riles Oct 2000

The Virtual Sociality Of Rights: The Case Of "Women's Rights Are Human Rights", Annelise Riles

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

This essay traces the relationship between activists and academics involved in the campaign for "women's rights as human rights" as a case study of the relationship between different classes of what I call "knowledge professionals" self-consciously acting in a transnational domain. The puzzle that animates this essay is the following: how was it that at the very moment at which a critique of "rights" and a reimagination of rights as "rights talk" proved to be such fertile ground for academic scholarship did the same "rights" prove to be an equally fertile ground for activist networking and lobbying activities? The paper …

A Comparative Review Of Structural Changes In South Korea And South Dakota Agriculture, Larry Janssen, Yong Kwon Oct 2000

A Comparative Review Of Structural Changes In South Korea And South Dakota Agriculture, Larry Janssen, Yong Kwon

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Structural change is an ongoing feature of economic development around the world. Despite vast differences in the structural organization of South Korean and South Dakota (U.S) agriculture, many structural changes are similar. This paper includes a comparative review of selected structural changes in Korean and South Dakota (U.S.) agriculture and the relative impact of forces affecting structural changes in both nations. Reduced economic impact of farm sector, farm population and farm size trends, full-time vs. part-time farming, changing food consumption, imports and exports are some of the major structural trends examined. Implications of changing agricultural structure in South Korea and …

Accessory Cell Defect In Unresponsiveness Of Neonates And Aged To Polysaccharide Vaccines., Subbarao Bondada, H Wu, D A Robertson, R L Chelvarajan Oct 2000

Accessory Cell Defect In Unresponsiveness Of Neonates And Aged To Polysaccharide Vaccines., Subbarao Bondada, H Wu, D A Robertson, R L Chelvarajan

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

T independent antigens elicit antibody responses in the absence of carrier specific T helper cells but require signals from accessory cells (macrophages and dendritic cells) or specific cytokines. They are further subdivided into TI-1 and TI-2 categories based on the ability of TI-1 but not TI-2 antigens to elicit immune responses from neonates. Most bacterial polysaccharides including the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines belong to the TI-2 class. It is hypothesized that defects in accessory cell function play a critical role in the failure of neonates to respond to such TI-2 antigens. Immune responses to these TI-2 stimuli are also reduced in …

Study Design. A randomized experimental evaluation of direct current stimulation in a validated animal model with an experimental control group, using blinded radiographic, biomechanical, histologic, and statistical measures.

Objectives. To evaluate the efficacy of the adjunctive use of direct current stimulation on the fusion rate and speed of healing of titanium interbody fusion cages packed with autograft in a sheep lumbar interbody fusion model.

Summary of Background Data. Titanium lumbar interbody spinal fusion cages have been reported to be 90% effective for single-level lumbar interbody fusion. However, fusion rates are reported to be between 70% and 80% in patients with …

Literary Skinheads? Writing From The Right In Reunified Germany, Jay Julian Rosellini Oct 2000

Literary Skinheads? Writing From The Right In Reunified Germany, Jay Julian Rosellini

Purdue University Press Books

"Literary Skinheads? is a very nuanced, meticulously researched and vividly written study of a series of important debates in German literary circles since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rapid political transformations that have accompanied German unification. No other book in the English-speaking world offers such a comprehensive survey of the legacy of radical conservative ideas in German political life. Rosellini not only offers trenchant interpretations of major political controversies of the last decade in Germany, but he also provides the necessary background information needed to make sense of these important public debates." Elliott Neaman, author of …
