Supplementing Metabolizable Protein To Yearling Heifers Grazing Winter Range, Trey Patterson, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Andy Applegarth Jan 2000

Supplementing Metabolizable Protein To Yearling Heifers Grazing Winter Range, Trey Patterson, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Andy Applegarth

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two experiments were conducted with pregnant yearling heifers grazing Sandhills winter range to evaluate response of supplementing to meet the metabolizable protein requirement of the heifers versus conventional supplementation based on crude protein. Supplements were fed from October to February (pre-calving) both years. Intake was measured in November, January and February of the first year. Supplementing to meet metabolizable protein requirement improved the heifers’ ability to maintain weight in year one, but not in year two. Heifer intakes ranged from 2.2% of BW in November to 1.5% in February. Feeding hay reduced body weight loss compared to no hay feeding …

Evaluation Of The 1996 Beef Cattle Nrc Model Predictions Of Intake And Gain For Calves Fed Low Or Medium Energy Density Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dennis R. Brink Jan 2000

Evaluation Of The 1996 Beef Cattle Nrc Model Predictions Of Intake And Gain For Calves Fed Low Or Medium Energy Density Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dennis R. Brink

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Data from feeding 54 diets in seven previous beef cattle growing studies were used to evaluate the 1996 NRC model for the accuracy of intake and gain predictions. Calf weights and diets were inputs into the model, and actual intakes were used to calculate predicted gain and actual gains were used to calculate predicted intakes. The model over-predicted calf intakes on low quality diets and under-predicted intakes on high quality diets. The model over-predicted gains on high quality diets and under-predicted gains on low quality diets. The NRC model did not accurately predict performance of cattle on low quality roughage …

Criminal And Civil Parental Liability Statutes: Would They Have Saved The 15 Who Died At Columbine?, Eric P. Ebenstein Jan 2000

Criminal And Civil Parental Liability Statutes: Would They Have Saved The 15 Who Died At Columbine?, Eric P. Ebenstein

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that current parental liability statutes in the United States are insufficient to hold parents accountable for their children's violent acts, such as the Columbine High School massacre. It advocates for strengthening these laws, particularly by adopting a negligence standard, to incentivize parents to monitor their children's activities more effectively and prevent such tragedies.

Wheel Running, Feeding, And Body Weight In Adult Male Rats: Generalizations To Adult Females And Younger Animals, Veronica Marie Afonso Jan 2000

Wheel Running, Feeding, And Body Weight In Adult Male Rats: Generalizations To Adult Females And Younger Animals, Veronica Marie Afonso

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

For adult male rats, initial access to a running wheel results in a pronounced suppression of feeding with a subsequent disruption of weight gain, but results with female and younger rats are not as clear. The present experiments demonstrated that age may be a confounding factor in the conflicting reports. The effects of ad lib wheel access on feeding and body weight were investigated in adult male, adult female, and weanling male rats using consistent procedures and recording data daily. For adult males and females, wheel access initially suppressed feeding and reduced weight relative to sedentary controls. These effects were …

Here's Your Burrito And Watch Your Back: Does Missouri Really Want To Hold Businesses Liable For Attacks On Patrons, Timothy A. Reuschel Jan 2000

Here's Your Burrito And Watch Your Back: Does Missouri Really Want To Hold Businesses Liable For Attacks On Patrons, Timothy A. Reuschel

Missouri Law Review

In the late 1980s, Missouri altered a longstanding common law rule and found that businesses sometimes owe a duty to their patrons to protect against or warn about criminal attacks by third parties.' This new rule generally applies when a business has experienced prior incidents that are reasonably recent and similar to the attack in question.3 In Stroot v. Taco Bell Corp., the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District of Missouri upheld a summary judgment entered in favor of a business for an attack that occurred in the business's parking lot even though the victim alleged that prior …

Disarticulation And Dissolution Of Crab Remains Across A Depth Gradient In The Bahamas: A Taphonomic Study, Rebecca A. Lincoln Jan 2000

Disarticulation And Dissolution Of Crab Remains Across A Depth Gradient In The Bahamas: A Taphonomic Study, Rebecca A. Lincoln

Honors Papers

The fields of Paleontology and Paleoecology would not be complete without taphonomy, the study of the processes affecting organisms between death and fossilization. Taphonomy is important because it allows us to make more complete conjectures about prehistoric organisms and environments, and makes us aware of possible holes and biases in the fossil record due to highly destructive processes or the loss of delicate, non-resistant organisms. Studies on the processes affecting modern organisms have contributed greatly to the understanding of ancient processes; however, most of these studies are nearshore and short-term. What is lacking is information on the effects of these …

Asset Price Inflation- Theory, History, And An Alternative Model, Christian Fitchett Jan 2000

Asset Price Inflation- Theory, History, And An Alternative Model, Christian Fitchett

Honors Papers

This paper takes a different approach by developing a model based on the boom and bust cycle of Japan during the mid to late 1980's, using currently accepted theory. In section II, I review the general characteristics of asset bubbles to familiarize the reader and offer some historical examples. Section III offers a review of many of the theoretical papers on asset bubbles, as well as empirical papers, which involve similar phenomena in order to gain some insight in building the model. In section IV, I build a theoretical model. Section V begins preliminary testing to examine this theory and …

Metametascience Towards Reconciliation, John P. Kennedy Jan 2000

Metametascience Towards Reconciliation, John P. Kennedy

Honors Papers

The ideal of consilience - the inductive concurrence of seemingly disparate ways of thinking into a single, unified, all-encompassing intellectual system - or more simply put, "unified learning" - has been largely set aside since the rise of the industrial age and the championing of the industrious, better-be it individualized mind of the enlightenment. The Catholic Church was the last western world-dominant institution to actively perpetuate and work according to the rubric of a unified field of knowledge. Our thoughts and everything else were under God and indivisible: our ethics and our physics alike were the immaterial idea-stuff of the …

Bad-Boy Bryozoan Biomarkers: Cheilostome Distribution Patterns Along A Bahamian Depth Gradient, Christopher J. Nytch Jan 2000

Bad-Boy Bryozoan Biomarkers: Cheilostome Distribution Patterns Along A Bahamian Depth Gradient, Christopher J. Nytch

Honors Papers

In 1993 and 1994, the Shelf and Slope Experimental Taphonomy Initiative (SSETI) deployed thirty-five samples of sea urchins along the continental shelf/slope of the Bahamas in an effort to explore the paleoecology and taphonomic potentials of shallow water carbonate environments. Samples were retrieved at 1-, 2-, and 6-year intervals for examination and comparison of epibiont accumulation. Tests and spines of the sea urchin Eucidaris were examined for encrusting cheilostome Bryozoa. Specimens were identified to the genus level. Assessment of abundance and distribution patterns with water depth shows that cheilostomes are prevalent in photic waters, and lacking at depth. Burial of …

The Scintilla Of Individual Profit: In Search Of Private Inurement And Excess Benefit, Darryll K. Jones Jan 2000

The Scintilla Of Individual Profit: In Search Of Private Inurement And Excess Benefit, Darryll K. Jones

Journal Publications

Private inurement certainly manifests itself in "protean" ways, but regardless of form, the prohibition against private inurement must be rendered consistent with the generally accepted notion that exempt entities are singularly distinguishable from taxable entities by the act of forbearance with respect to individual profit, since that is the distinction the prohibition was originally intended to enforce. Rendering the prohibition consistent with the single notion underlying the existence and theories of tax-exemption will resolve much of its elasticity, elusiveness, and long-lasting evolution. Such a result is necessary and good not only because of the imposition of personal liability under section …

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland Jan 2000

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland

Articles & Book Chapters

The application of criminal law to consensual sex is an arena of conflict and contest between conservative and liberal forces in the United States, with occasional feminist interventions. The same arguments tend to recur on each side of the debate. Conservatives assert the appropriateness and necessity of enforcing a particular Judeo-Christian sexual morality through law. Liberals argue for tolerance of private consensual sexual conduct. When the debate shifts from the private to the public arena, conservatives may argue privacy principles, asserting the right of bystanders to be let alone, whereas liberals may shift to freedom of expression arguments. In this …

The Watershed Trail: Melville To The Glen, A Greenway Master Plan For The Town Of Portsmouth, Deidra J. Storti

Open Access Master's Theses

The Greenway Master Plan is a guide for developing a multi-user trail in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This report provides a comprehensive approach to implementing a trail from Melville to The Glen, called The Watershed Trail. While it focuses on integrating important aspects of the natural and human environment for one segment of trail, the report could be used to direct the community in developing an island-wide system of various types of publicly accessible trails. The goal of developing the trail is multi-purposed. First, islanders have expressed a desire to develop off-road pathways that link their homes, shopping, …

Growth Curves Of Four Species Of Commercially Valuable Freshwater Mussels (Bivalva: Unionidae), Alan D. Christian, Chris L. Davidson, William R. Posey Ii, Peter J. Rust, Jerry L. Farris, John L. Harris, George L. Harp Jan 2000

Growth Curves Of Four Species Of Commercially Valuable Freshwater Mussels (Bivalva: Unionidae), Alan D. Christian, Chris L. Davidson, William R. Posey Ii, Peter J. Rust, Jerry L. Farris, John L. Harris, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

North American freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) have been exploited commercially for over 100 years and have been regulated using shell size limits and/or harvest seasons. Presently, freshwater mussels are considered a threatened faunal group in North America due to the large numbers of endangered, threatened or special concern species. Therefore, management of this fauna should emphasize their long-term sustainability. The objectives of this study were 1) to construct von Bertalanffy growth curves for selected "commercially-most-valuable" species, Fusconaia ebena, Megalonaias nervosa, Amblema plicata and Quadrula quadrula, from five rivers and two reservoirs, 2) to compare species-specific von Bertalanffy growth curves from …
