Turkish Journal of Biology

In this study the purpose was to determine the effect of sialoadenectomy (Maternal Epidermal Growth Factor deficiency) on epididymal development and to compare it with that of antiandrogen (Flutamide) application.Forty 12-week-old, sexually mature and pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were chosen as the animal model. They were divided into four groups; Group I : Control group, Group II : Sialoadenectomized (mated on 28^{th} day), Group III: Flutamide applied (between gestational day 11 and 21), Group IV: Sialoadenectomy + Flutamide applied. After birth, all male rats were observed morphologically on the 60th day and sacrificed on the 60^{th} day postpartum under general anaesthesia. …

The Effect Of Sulphur Dioxide On Macrophage Phagocytic Activity In Diabetic Rats, Veci̇he Ni̇met İzgüt Uysal, Vural Küçükatay, Aysel Ağar, Pi̇raye Yargiçoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Sulphur dioxide as a criterion of air pollution supresses macrophage functions. Some immunological changes in diabetes mellitus have been detected. In the present study, we examined the effect of sulphur dioxide on macrophage phagocytic activity in diabetic rats. The animals were separated into four groups as: 1) Control, 2) Sulphur dioxide, 3) Diabetes mellitus, 4) Diabetes mellitus+sulphur dioxide. The first and the third groups of animals were respirated with filtered atmosphere air in a special chamber one hour daily for eight weeks, while the other groups were exposed to 10 ppm sulphur dioxide in the same conditions and periods. The …

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller Jan 2000

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A discussion is presented on trends in software engineering. This can be done by simply extrapolating some of the popular, current trends. And, in fact, we examine a few of these obvious indicators. However, software engineering has had new approaches that are more revolutionary than evolutionary. In particular, we try to discern trends in software engineering based on trends in delivered software systems.

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik Jan 2000

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The link between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

Cybershopping Levels The Playing Field In Global Retailing, Charles D. Mccullough Jan 2000

Cybershopping Levels The Playing Field In Global Retailing, Charles D. Mccullough

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Today's business environment has an ever-changing landscape. The environment is no longer just local, regional, or national. It is a global environment. The most successful businesses will have to be able to meet the needs of its customers before its competitors. Many people do not like huge stores and crowded aisles. Also, the element of customer service seems to be vanishing. This has led to customer dissatisfaction. Customers are increasingly looking for a new format in which they can buy their goods. They have increasingly turned to the Internet. The future of the Internet looks bright. Retailers are making their …

Conservation Easement Grantors: Doing Good And Doing Well, Nancy Oppenheimer Jan 2000

Conservation Easement Grantors: Doing Good And Doing Well, Nancy Oppenheimer

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Beginning in 2000, Colorado legislation authorized tax credits and cash refunds of up to $100,000 for grantors of conservation easements. Other benefits accruing to grantors are lower property tax rates, federal income tax credits and decreasing estate valuations subject to federal estate taxes. Private conservation easements preserve land for outdoor recreation, education, scenic views, open spaces, historic properties and protect relatively natural habitat. Because the development rights are permanently transferred, conservation easements provide permanent protection from development regardless of shifts in political winds.

Of Learning Civil Procedure, Practicing Civil Practice, And Studying A Civil Action: A Low-Cost Proposal To Introduce First-Year Law Students To The Neglected Maccrate Skills, Raleigh Hannah Levine Jan 2000

Of Learning Civil Procedure, Practicing Civil Practice, And Studying A Civil Action: A Low-Cost Proposal To Introduce First-Year Law Students To The Neglected Maccrate Skills, Raleigh Hannah Levine

Faculty Scholarship

This article proposes three exercises designed to help introduce law students to four of the lawyering skills that the American Bar Association's MacCrate Report has identified as fundamental, but that legal scholarship has largely ignored: factual investigation, client counseling, recognizing and resolving ethical dilemmas, and organization and management of legal work. My goal in devising these exercises has been to allow a professor teaching a traditional, first-year civil procedure class to incorporate them into her syllabus at low cost to herself (in terms of time expended and doctrine sacrificed) and to the law school as an institution (in terms of …

Divining Regulatory Intent: The Place For A "Legislative History" Of Agency Rules, Lars Noah Jan 2000

Divining Regulatory Intent: The Place For A "Legislative History" Of Agency Rules, Lars Noah

UC Law Journal

This Article juxtaposes the recent debates about statutory interpretation and the judicial uses of legislative histories with the relative quiescence over methods for interpreting agency regulations. The latter subject merits more attention than it has received given the relatively greater prevalence and practical import of legislative rules issued by administrative agencies as compared with statutory commands from the legislature. Unlike attempts to understand the legislature's original intent, whether by focusing solely on statutory text or considering extrinsic aids found in various pre-enactment explanatory materials, courts routinely defer to agencies' post-promulgation interpretations of the meaning of their regulations. This grants executive …

Biotechnology And The Legal Constitution Of The Self: Managing Identity In Science, The Market, And Society, Jonathan Kahn Jan 2000

Biotechnology And The Legal Constitution Of The Self: Managing Identity In Science, The Market, And Society, Jonathan Kahn

UC Law Journal

This article revisits the case of Moore v. Regents of the University of California to explore and elaborate an approach that points toward a more effective and just manner of ordering the legal management of identity in the realm of biotechnology-and perhaps beyond.

First, Professor Kahn explores how the tort of appropriation of identity, as invoked by the California Appellate Court in Moore, opens up new approaches to inform and perhaps supplement principles of property law as a guide to managing genetic information or other materials that seem intimately bound up with a particular human subject.

Second, he analyzes how …

Parental Care And Clutch Sizes In North And South American Birds, Thomas E. Martin, P. R. Martin, C. R. Olson, B. J. Heidinger, J. J. Fontaine Jan 2000

Parental Care And Clutch Sizes In North And South American Birds, Thomas E. Martin, P. R. Martin, C. R. Olson, B. J. Heidinger, J. J. Fontaine

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The evolutionary causes of small clutch sizes in tropical and Southern Hemisphere regions are poorly understood. Alexander Skutch proposed 50 years ago that higher nest predation in the south constrains the rate at which parent birds can deliver food to young and thereby constrains clutch size by limiting the number of young that parents can feed. This hypothesis for explaining differences in clutch size and parental behaviors between latitudes has remained untested. Here, a detailed study of bird species in Arizona and Argentina shows that Skutch's hypothesis explains clutch size variation within North and South America. However, neither Skutch's hypothesis …

Comparison Of Postmortem Techniques For The Detection Of Mycobacterium Bovis In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Scott D. Fitzgerald, John B. Kaneene, Kelly L. Butler, Kathy R. Clarke, Jean S. Fierke, Stephen M. Schmitt, Colleen S. Bruning-Fann, Rachel R. Mitchell, Dale E. Berry, Janet B. Payeur

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

A retrospective study of various diagnostic postmortem techniques used in a 4-year surveillance program for detection of Mycobacterium bovis infection in wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was conducted. The tests evaluated were routine histopathology, acid-fast staining, detection of acid-fast bacilli in culture, and an M. tuberculosis group-specific genetic probe applied to pure cultures. Each of these techniques were compared with a reference or “gold standard” of mycobacterial culture and identification. Histopathology, the most rapid form of testing for M. bovis infection in white-tailed deer samples, had a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 87%, resulting in a …

Terrestrial Natural Communities Of Nebraska - Version Ii, Gerry Steinauer, Steven B. Rolfsmeier Jan 2000

Terrestrial Natural Communities Of Nebraska - Version Ii, Gerry Steinauer, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

For more than a decade, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and state natural heritage programs, including the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NNHP), have used a “coarse filter/fine filter” approach to preserving biological diversity (The Nature Conservancy, 1994). This approach involves identification and protection of natural communities (coarse filter) as well as rare species (fine filter). Identifying and protecting representative examples of natural communities ensures conservation of most species, biotic interactions and ecological processes. Those species that “fall through” the community filters are generally the rare species. Identification and protection of viable occurrences of rare species serves as the fine filter for …

Conservation In A Highly Fragmented Landscape: The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregional Conservation Plan, The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregion Planning Team

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

With the adoption of Conservation by Design in 1995, The Nature Conservancy recognized the importance of working at larger scales to achieve our mission which is: the long-term survival of all viable native species and community types through the design and conservation of portfolios of sites within ecoregions. The Conservancy set forth to design conservation plans on an ecoregional basis by working closely with various conservation partners. These plans are intended to provide a framework within which the Conservancy and our partners, such as the Natural Heritage Programs, can make decisions regarding conservation actions to be taken at the …

Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth Jan 2000

Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii) is a grassland species endemic to the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Its behavior and ecology have been shaped by these arid ecosystems and the health of its populations is dependent on the availability of grasslands that contain a shrub component. Populations of many grassland birds have experienced dramatic declines due to the loss and deterioration of grassland habitats, and there has been concern about the trends in Cassin’s Sparrow populations. Without better information about population trends, ecology, and effects of management activities, and without a stronger emphasis on grassland management, Cassin’s Sparrows and other grassland …

Fish Tales: More Trout To Catch In Utach Thanks To Federal-State Cooperation, John Seals, Tim Miles Jan 2000

Fish Tales: More Trout To Catch In Utach Thanks To Federal-State Cooperation, John Seals, Tim Miles

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

As reciprocity to Utah Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) for its help last year feeding and hauling young fish, the Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is providing more fish for Utah waters, which means more trout dinners for recreational anglers.

The DWR is currently busy hauling about 260,000 rainbow trout fingerlings – roughly 8600 pounds of fish – from Jones Hole to lakes throughout the state, including Steinaker Reservoir near Vernal, and Mantua and East Canyon Reservoirs near Ogden. About half of the fish are going into Scofield Reservoir in Carbon County, adding to 270,000 Jones Hole trout that were …

Canada Lynx Conservation Assessment And Strategy, Bill Ruediger, Jim Claar, Steve Mighton, Bob Naney, Tony Rinaldi, Fred Wahl, Nancy Warren, Dick Wenger, Al Williamson, Lyle Lewis, Bryon Holt, Gary Patton, Joel Trick, Anne Vandehey, Steve Gniadek

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Lynx Conservation Assessment and Strategy was developed to provide a consistent and effective approach to conserve Canada lynx on federal lands in the conterminous United States. The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management, and United States Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service initiated the Lynx Conservation Strategy Action Plan in spring of 1998.

The lynx has been proposed for listing as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (Federal Register, Volume 63, No. 130, July 8, 1998). In the proposed rule, the U.S. Fish and …
