Comparing Genotypic And Phenotypic Methods For Differentiating Strains Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From The Environment, Lateef Y. Saffore Jan 2000

Comparing Genotypic And Phenotypic Methods For Differentiating Strains Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From The Environment, Lateef Y. Saffore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative, oxidase-negative, lactose fermenting rod belonging to the family Enterohacleriaceae. The enteric bacteria are common inhabitants of animal and human guts, but are not considered to be native to the environment. The presence of E. coli and similar enteric bacteria (coliforms) in surface water or groundwater implies the presence of fecal contamination from human or animal sources. E. coli has been used as an indicator of sewage-contaminated water since the 1930's and some strains are also causative agents of food or waterborne disease (Francy et al., 1993). The severity of disease can vary markedly depending …

Parens Patriae And A Modest Proposal For The Twenty-First Century: Legal Philosophy And A New Look At Children's Welfare, Natalie Loder Clark

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This paper will turn to philosophy to seek material for limiting the exercise of parens patriae power. A significant reduction of the government's role will better serve the modern concern for child rearing which is this century's re-definition of best interests.

Genetic Enhancement Technologies And The New Society, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2000

Genetic Enhancement Technologies And The New Society, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

So long as procreation continues to remain a central driving force in a marital relationship, and the family the very core of progressive society, efforts will be undertaken to expand the period of fecundity and combat infertility. Genetic planning and eugenic programming are more rational and humane alternatives to population regulation than death by famine and war.

Genetic enhancement technologies and the scientific research undertaken to advance them should be viewed as not only aiding (or, sometimes resolving) the tragedy of infertility in family planning, but as a tool for enhancing the health of a Nation's citizens by engineering man's …

Project Body Image, Elaine M. Eshbaugh Jan 2000

Project Body Image, Elaine M. Eshbaugh

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

I have chosen to develop an intervention intended to improve body image in middle/junior high school girls. This project has been conducted in four parts: 1) literature review, 2) initial screening, 3) college interviews, and 4) middle school group interview. My goal in interviewing college women was to compare the ideas and experiences of those with positive and negative body images and incorporate these findings into my intervention. My motivation for interviewing middle school girls was to explore more fully their culture, in particular the media images that are most influential in their lives. I will detail each of these …

The New Chemical Weapons Convention And Export Controls: Towards Greater Multilateralism, Urs A. Cipolat Jan 2000

The New Chemical Weapons Convention And Export Controls: Towards Greater Multilateralism, Urs A. Cipolat

Michigan Journal of International Law

The article is structured in five parts. Section I gives an overview of the history of the CWC. Section II focuses on the CWC' s material scope. This discussion is important in order to determine the items that will fall under an eventual export control obligation. Section III presents the main obligations under the CWC, while Section IV deals exclusively with the specific obligations pertaining to export controls. The implementation of these specific obligations-which, for the purposes of this article, are referred to as transfer rules-is the focus of Section V.

Massachusetts, Myanmar, Market Participation, And The Federal Shutdown Of Selective Purchasing Laws: Is The Power To Purchase Really The Power To Regulate , Scott Sommers Jan 2000

Massachusetts, Myanmar, Market Participation, And The Federal Shutdown Of Selective Purchasing Laws: Is The Power To Purchase Really The Power To Regulate , Scott Sommers

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This article does not discuss whether intentionally giving companies an incentive to withdraw from Burma is economically or politically desirable for the people of Burma. The First Circuit did not concern itself with this subject either in rejecting the Massachusetts Burma Law. The question of interest to the court, and which should be of interest to any state citizen or global corporation interested in doing business with state agencies, was whether Massachusetts had the discretion to make a purchasing law directly concerning the business involvement of suppliers in foreign countries. While legitimate legal and practical arguments may be made that …

China's Accession To The Wto: How Will This Benefit European Undertakings?, Olivier Prost, Song Li Wei Jan 2000

China's Accession To The Wto: How Will This Benefit European Undertakings?, Olivier Prost, Song Li Wei

Fordham International Law Journal

China's accession to the World Trade Organization ("WTO") will help open up the Chinese market for European undertakings and will boost China's role as a major partner of the European Community. Accordingly, China's accession primarily can be seen as a factor in liberalizing Sino-European trade relations. China's accession to the WTO also will cause this country to lose progressively its "exception" status. As a result, Europe, on the one hand, will treat China just like its other trading partners, while China, on the other hand, will benefit fully from its WTO membership, not only with regard to its WTO obligations, …

The Effect Of Globalization On Domestic Legal Services, Michael Dowdle, E. Clinton Bamberger, Dorchen Leidholdt, Filipe Gonzalez Morales, Lucie White Jan 2000

The Effect Of Globalization On Domestic Legal Services, Michael Dowdle, E. Clinton Bamberger, Dorchen Leidholdt, Filipe Gonzalez Morales, Lucie White

Fordham International Law Journal

Globalization, in the context of this panel, refers to international, trans-border processes which are not regulated by the international legal framework, either private law or public international law. These processes, these unregulated influences, are having both positive and negative effects and affecting aspects of culture and society which had previously been considered domestic or wholly domestic concerns. This is creating a tension within both the domestic and international environments, and it is this particular tension that this panel seeks to address.

E. Clinton Bamberger, Emeritus Professor of Law, University of Maryland Law School, will speak about how domestic systems in …

Footprints Of Death: Cluster Bombs As Indiscriminate Weapons Under International Humanitarian Law, Virgil Wiebe Jan 2000

Footprints Of Death: Cluster Bombs As Indiscriminate Weapons Under International Humanitarian Law, Virgil Wiebe

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article applies these principles of discrimination to the real, rather than idealized, use and characteristics of cluster bombs. Briefly stated, these principles call upon parties to an armed conflict to distinguish between civilians and combatants and to weigh the military advantages of a particular weapon or type of attack against the harm it will do to civilians and civilian objects. This Article also considers briefly the global problem of cluster munitions and examines fundamental components of the discrimination principle as they apply to cluster bombs. As three specific case studies, it analyzes the use of cluster bombs by breakaway …
