Helminthoxys Abrocomae N. Sp. (Nematoda: Oxyurida) From Abrocoma Cinerea In Bolivia, Jean-Pierre Hugot, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new pinworm parasite is described from Abrocoma cinerea, a caviomorph rodent of the superfamily Octodontoidea from the Andes of Bolivia. The new species, Helminthoxys abrocomae n. sp., possesses special secretory mamelons which we consider a synapomorphy of the genus Helminthoxys. Within Helminthoxys, the closest relatives are found in octodontoid rodents: H. gigantea occurs in Octodon degus in Chile and O. bridgesi in Argentina, and H. freitasi is a parasite of Thrichomys aperoides in Brazil. H. abrocomae n. sp. differs from both other species morphometrically in relation to different parts of the body in both sexes, particularly …

A Phylogenetic Hypothesis For Species Of The Genus Taenia (Eucestoda: Taeniidae), Eric P. Hoberg, Arlene Jones, Robert L. Rausch, Keeseon S. Eom, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cladistic analysis of a numerical data matrix describing 27 characters for species of Taenia resulted in four most parsimonious phylogenetic trees (174 steps; consistency index = 0.28; homoplasy index = 0.72; retention index = 0.48). Monophyly for Taenia is diagnosed by the metacestode that is either a cysticercus or a form derived from a bladder-like larva; no other unequivocal synapomorphies are evident. Tree structure provides no support for recognition of a diversity of tribes or genera within the Taeniinae: Fimbriotaeniini and Taeniini have no phylogenetic basis. Hydatigera, Fimbriotaenia, Fossor, Monordotaenia, Multiceps, Taeniarhynchus, Tetratirotaenia must …

Resistance to antimicrobial agents used to treat severe Campylobacter spp. gastroenteritis is increasing worldwide. We assessed the antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. isolates of human and animal origin. More than half (n = 32) were resistant to sulphonamide, a feature known to be associated with the presence of integrons. Analysis of these integrons will further our understanding of Campylobacter spp. epidemiology.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Soleus muscle fibers were examined electron microscopically from pre- and postflight biopsies of four astronauts orbited for 17 days during the Life and Microgravity Sciences Spacelab Mission (June 1996). Myofilament density and spacing were normalized to a 2.4-μm sarcomere length. Thick filament density (~1,062 filaments/μm2) and spacing (~32.5 nm) were unchanged by spaceflight. Preflight thin filament density (2,976/μm2) decreased significantly (P < 0.01) to 2,215/μm2 in the overlap A band region as a result of a 17% filament loss and a 9% increase in short filaments. Normal fibers had 13% short thin filaments. The 26% decrease in thin filaments …

Substrate Profile In Rat Soleus Muscle Fibers After Hindlimb Unloading And Fatigue, Varvara P. Grichko, Anne R. Heywood-Cooksey, Kameha R. Kidd, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Limb muscles from rats flown in space and after hindlimb unloading (HU) show an increased fatigability, and spaceflight has been shown to result in a reduced ability to oxidize fatty acids. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of HU on the substrate content in fast- and slow-twitch fibers and to assess the substrate utilization patterns in single slow type I fibers isolated from control and HU animals.Asecond objective was to assess whether HU altered the ability of the heart or limb muscle to oxidize pyruvate or palmitate. After 2 wk of HU, single fibers were isolated …

Stocking Rate Guidelines For Rural Small Holdings, Swan Coastal Plain And Darling Scarp And Surrounds, Western Australia, Dennis Van Gool, Ken Angell, Lindsay Stephens

Agriculture reports

Small rural holdings are often owned by people who want to pursue a semi-rural lifestyle but who are inexperienced in land management issues. This can result in landholders stocking their properties with animals at rates higher than the land resources can sustain, leading to degradation problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and damage to vegetation. This document provides information and guidelines to help planners, developers, local authorities and land owners determine the base stocking rates for rural small holdings on the Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp and immediate surrounds. The advice utilises Agriculture Western Australia’s rural stocking rate …

The race model has been the darling of patent economists and game theorists. This model assumes that the winner, namely the first to invent, takes the patent grant with the market dominance that comes with it, whereas the second comer, in the best tradition of sports contests, obligingly accepts her loss and quietly vanishes from the scene. While the sports analogy has provided a useful framework for understanding the economics of invention, it has obfuscated an important aspect of the inventive process: the possibility of strategic publication of research findings in order to prevent the issuance of a patent to …

Farmers' Perspectives Of Michigan State University Extension: Trends And Lessons From 1996 And 1999, Murari Suvedi, Maria Knight Lapinksi, Shelly Campo Feb 2000

Farmers' Perspectives Of Michigan State University Extension: Trends And Lessons From 1996 And 1999, Murari Suvedi, Maria Knight Lapinksi, Shelly Campo

Journal of Extension

In 1994, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) reorganized into Area of Expertise teams (AOE) linking county agents and specialists around specific commodity groups' needs. A statewide survey was conducted in 1996 and 1999 to determine agricultural producers' educational needs and perceptions of MSUE. Participation rates among full-time farmers in MSUE programs are high. The number of part-time farmers is increasing, and these farmers are participating less in MSUE programs. Farmers want one-on-one interaction with Extension agents. Marketing, business management and farm economics were named as important educational needs by significantly more farmers in 1999 than in 1996.

Pesticide Use And Grower Perceptions Of Pest Problems On Ornamental Crops In Hawaii, Robert G. Holingsworth, Arnold H. Hara, Kelvin T. Sewake Feb 2000

Pesticide Use And Grower Perceptions Of Pest Problems On Ornamental Crops In Hawaii, Robert G. Holingsworth, Arnold H. Hara, Kelvin T. Sewake

Journal of Extension

Ninety-five out of 400 growers (23.8%) of ornamental crops in Hawaii responded to a survey about pest problems and pesticide use. Sixty-eight percent of respondents listed either cut orchids or anthuriums as their main crop. Pests considered serious on these crops included thrips, mites and slugs/snails. Pesticide use (excluding fungicides) was heavy on cut orchids and anthuriums, averaged 35.8 and 27.7 pesticide applications per grower per year, respectively. Growers who scouted for pests made far fewer pesticide applications than those who did not. Growers obtained most of their pest control information from government sources, chiefly the Cooperative Extension Service.

Information Transfer In The Illinois Swine Industry: How Producers Are Informed Of New Technologies, Genefer L. Brashear, Gilbert Hollis, Matthew B. Wheeler

Journal of Extension

This study examined how information transfer of new technological advances occurs between university scientists and pork producers. The questionnaire was designed to determine two things: (a) where producers from various swine operations obtain their information about new technologies and (b) how aggressively they implement of these advances. The subjects for this survey were swine producers primarily from Illinois. The survey was mailed to more than 300 swine producers and 127 usable surveys were returned. The results showed that producers have access to on-farm computers, but rely on them and university specialists less as information sources.

Survey Results From Users Of A Dairy Management Web Site, Robert C. Walker, Lisa A. Holden

Journal of Extension

To augment the educational opportunities in a program called Dairy Management and Profitability (Dairy-MAP), a Web site was developed for dairy producers, agribusiness personnel, and educators. The Web site had more than 10,000 users from 1995 to 1998. In 1998, a voluntary survey was conducted on the Web site to gather information about users and educational impact. Less than 10% of the site users completed the survey. Only 26% of the Dairy-MAP program participants visited the Web site. A majority of the users (71%) were from the United States, and nearly half (45%) from educational institutions. About half (49%) of …

Keep It Simple... Use A Supertable, J Reynaldo A. Santos, Billy J Higginbotham Feb 2000

Keep It Simple... Use A Supertable, J Reynaldo A. Santos, Billy J Higginbotham

Journal of Extension

When used in conjunction with statistical analysis, tables and graphs facilitate value comparisons, help discern trends, and indicate the magnitude or lack of differences between and/or among test variables. Supertables overcome the need for many small tables and/or graphs and presents many comparisons in common, easily understood dimensions. Supertables offer easily comprehensible, bite-sized information to the intended audience without overwhelming them. Used alone, it minimizes the introduction of extraneous data and redundant statistics into any project report or summary. This paper demonstrates the design and construction of a supertable for a typical Extension survey.

In-Line Measurement Of Solibility Of Physical Blowing Agents In Thermoplastic Melts As Related To Extrusion Foaming, Qiang Zhang Jan 2000

In-Line Measurement Of Solibility Of Physical Blowing Agents In Thermoplastic Melts As Related To Extrusion Foaming, Qiang Zhang

Dissertations

A novel in-line method for measuring physical blowing agent solubility in thermoplastic melts in extrusion foaming equipment has been developed in this study. This method uses video microscopy in connection with a foaming extruder (single or twin-screw) to generate solubility data by observing the onset of gas bubble formation/dissolution. This method offers a number of advantages over the existing conventional methods. It can be easily used to obtain solubility data for many foamable thermoplastic-physical blowing agent systems at high pressure and temperature near actual foaming conditions. Data generated using this method could be directly used to characterize and control a …

Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van Jan 2000

Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van

Dissertations

Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) has been the subject of recent regulatory activities and agenda. Among them are the Infonnation Collection Rule (ICR), the Disinfectants/Disinfection By-Product Rule (D/DBPR) and the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (ESWTR). Both the latter two have provisions to limit the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) by controlling reactivity and removal of DOM or both. Brief regulatory review of these rules was given.

Although the topic of DBP formation potential and DBP precursor removal have been studied by many researchers since Rooks (1974), the efficacy of methods that have been developed to date has been handicapped …

Intelligent Process For Uasb Reactors, Sita Mohan Jan 2000

Intelligent Process For Uasb Reactors, Sita Mohan

Theses

The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor is widely used for the anaerobic treatment of concentrated municipal / industrial wastewaters and sludges. Ability to handle high organic loading rates and cost effectiveness are often the most cited merits of the UASB process. Numerous mathematical models have been developed to describe the process and mechanistic phenomena in these systems. However, evidence in the literature of these models having been applied, either as control or diagnostic tools is limited. The use of intelligent process control mechanisms can greatly ease problems associated with operating these reactor systems.

The objective of this study is …
